When is a wolf too old to be the new lead?

When is a wolf too old to be the new lead?

Is there any recommendation for how old a wolf should be to be a good fit for a new lead? Is there any disadvantage to making a 6-year-old wolf the new lead when the old dies?

My first lead is getting old, and I'm looking at my options for getting a lead that's related to her, and if all else fails it would be one of her first pups just to buy me some time. They'd be about 6 years old by that time, though. I wouldn't mind having a short reign for the next lead if it's all the same, but if it means I would struggle for two in-game years, I'd rather not make that choice. It's my first lead switch, so I'm not sure what I should take into consideration

Thank you in advance for any advice!

When your lead dies, you lose all explored biomes except for your current one and have to scout the map all over again. It's kind of a pain. Just because of that, I'd prefer to have a young wolf so I don't have to do it again so soon.

If the wolf is over 5 years old I feel like that is too old. Since it does take time for pups to be born and raised up. Your next lead wolf (6 years old option) may pass away before any pups can age up and lvl up. If you can maybe you should breed your current lead wolf again to get a younger pup and just have that as your lead wolf with lower stats but continue working on their lvl until the pup reaches 10+ lvl (wolf will be around 4 years old when they reach that level) before breeding it. It will cause you to have a bit of a struggle and you will have to redo the biomes with some difficulty. But it wont be as hard as using the 6 year old pup and then having that wolf die within a wolvden year.

Thank you for your insights! Sounds like a younger lead would be less of a hassle, so I'll rethink my options.
