Hopefully you don't mind me bumping this with a reply, because I'd like to know this as well. It seems it's needed for a recipe that also calls for an item that rots, which is a bit inconvenient when I don't know what to go after that will drop the root. I've only ever had the growth animals drop chunks so far.

I got my one and only growth root from a level 18 growth iguana, so I think it is from growth animals but must be rarer than the chunks. I agree, it's inconvenient that the recipe mixes rotting items and a seemingly much rarer non-rotting item. At this point I just feed the chunks to my wolves or sell to the raccoon.

I don't mind at all, it's quite helpful actually! My best guess as of last month has been that it's a rare drop from enemies that normally drop growth chunks, and now that seems to have some merit.

There seems to be a small group of us looking for roots, so I'll probably come back later with a list of confirmed drops and suspected/possible drops

Aaaah that would be fantastic! I still haven't had one drop (probably doesn't help I'm on a new alpha so scrambling to finish re-unlocking biomes - some seem to have more growth animals than others) but if I catch one I can let you know what dropped it if it helps?

I believe I got some growth roots from trading with one of the event Raccoon encounters? I don't recall which response it was, but I am certain it was a raccoon encounter.

And yeah, I wish it wasn't a food item that rots. Makes using it for crafting much harder.

No, it doesn't. The poster above was probably thinking of growth chunk, which is an entirely different item (and now with remnants can be made into a craftable, non-rotting form anyway).
