If your lead is also your breeding male, you don't have to retire them as both . You can remove them from being your breeding male without retiring them from being your lead; it's just difficult to find at first ! Don't click retire ! Instead, go to your wolf's page, click "Breed to this breeding male", go to the settings tab from there, then scroll down !

I spent a whole day panicking because I thought I would have to pay 40 GC or however much it would be !

You can leave a battle you are for sure gonna lose when you have a lucky feet active and it will keep the affects for your next battle. You only lose it after you won/lost a battle. :)

Can a hunting party with clashing personalities ever learn to get along or is it better to switch around wolves now even at the risk of losing synergy? (Literally just noticed I have a stoic and a romantic in the same party and I get the inclination that's why so many of my hunts are failing)

It's better to switch your wolves around or buy a personality changer from the personality snake. hunting synergy can be earned over time, but fighting wolves are forever unless you buy one of them a changer.
