Question about fox/canine items

So I just snagged the base applicator and I was wondering if there was any rhyme or reason to which battle encounters drop canine or fox items? Like if it's just fox (beyond pelts) or if canine battles can drop it and at what level do they seem more likely to.

To get trophy items you must be level 10 or higher, and the enemy you are fighting must be no more than 5 levels below your own. I don't remember what all you need for the fox recipe, but the items are pretty straightforward about what you need to fight to get them - a canine claw can be gained from any canine (I've gotten them from coyotes and wolves). A red fox pelt can only be gained from red foxes. A fox skull can be won from any fox battle.
