Using marking removal on stud

I recently put up a new stud after my old male passed, and wanted to tweak his markings but am getting a 

"You cannot use this item on your breeding male as he is currently available for stud." 

Message when I go to use a marking removal item. Is this standard or do I need to remove my male in order to make changes on him? 

I think you need to edit his settings so he isn't available for public stud. After you use the item, just change them back.
