PSA: Potato Pups in The TC

@Serious #16495

If you're going to raise and chase (which is when you take care of wolves until they're adults then chase them), you should try chasing better looking wolves with higher stats for the new players out there.

Taking in those potato pups just encourages people to keep putting them up if they're going to be sold.

I think my 'am I keeping this' run in order of stats (400+ is an auto-keep, 350+ defaults to next criteria), if they've got decent marks OR if they're T2. And below 350 it has to really slap to be a keeper. But I run into issues when the whole litter starts coming up decent so I prob need to get stricter with my own keepers.

I do have a bit of an issue chasing pups still, but I'm seeing the merit of yeeting pups that aren't 'top tier' in a sales sense. I made an auction thread with what I thought were SUPER low starting bids for some nice(or so I thought) tier 2 pups and got zero attention on them at all. It was kind of baffling cause they were pups I would have bid on myself.

As a newer player, the dead market there is kind of discouraging, since a huge part of the game is breeding new pups, but then to just end up chasing 90% of them, it makes me wonder the point of it when there's no desire for the rest of the brood.

That's a good note. It is true we all have different guidelines on which pups to keep and which to chase.

I just wish the community wasn't worried about chasing their pups, especially if they don't want the pup they're fretting over.

Yeah. But so far I'm hoarding all my pups XD I've only sold adults I've leveled/upped their proficiencies on to make room. I gotta do the hard thing and actually sort out keepers from potatos.

Big agree!

At the end of the day, they are digital art... not actual animals or characters or anything. If you don't want it, and it's not worth anything, don't make it someone else's burden. If you don't want to keep it, it's kinda outta your hands once it changes ownership.

Granted, there are plenty of non-potato pups being sold in the Trade Center right now that are still cheap that can be used for whatever purposes you guys have for buying cheap wolves to use temporarily or whatever >.>

The focus is the potatoes - the 1-3 marking pups that are just... wasted data lol.

Oh. The lowmark pups I tend to keep are if they're t2 breed only ones, or nbw bases since you can't just base-change to those. It sucks though when you get like a nice lavender base that has 1(one) mark, and it's something like 'eyebrows'. It's just a real bummer cause it's gonna be pricey to make it worth while

It really depends on what you consider a potato pup tbh.

I see someone’s 10 mark merle bomb stat monster that’s inbred to shit as a potato. Why? Because it’s inbred and I hate merle.

On the other end i see someone else’s  1-3 mark wolf with like 201 stats but because it flows well together and looks appealing, I’m not gonna call it potato.

For some people it’s not about stats or if they have breed only markings or a super duper rare and unique base that nobody else has yet. For some people it’s about the overall appearance.

Point is standards are different for everyone and that’s okay. What is a potato to you might not be a potato to someone else, and that’s okay too.

You also have to consider that some newbie will buy that 1 SC potato pup and think it’s the best thing ever.

I appreciate this thread!  I'm totally vicious when it comes to yeeting pups, lol, sometimes I feel bad because I get attached to "virtual pets" way too easily but I've always had the mentality of not saddling the TC with pups that aren't likely to sell.

I also definitely get the mentality that one person's potato is another's treasure, I've bought some weird-looking wolves myself!  But my personal rule is anything that isn't 250+ stat with at least 4 markings goes in the 'chase' pile.  Even then, the TC is so slow unless you have something pretty rare/desirable, I end up chasing a TON of "decent" wolves as well as "potatoes".

I also think chasing pups does your pack a favor overall.  Right now I have WAY too many pups in both the keep and sell categories, honestly I should chase a bunch of them but they're pretty and it's hard to dump them OTL  I'm sure I will eventually.

I know it helps me to make up a little story about why the pups are being chased.  I don't write it down or anything, just have it in mind for the overall lore of my pack.  And personally I would rather chase a healthy, well-fed pup than let them languish.  I get so sad when I see the little "neglect" tag.

"theres no market, no one wants them" is false. ive never chased a single pup, make upwards of 10gc a week, and sell a ton of pups for 1sc. my breeding male has over 300 living offspring. most of them sold for 1sc.

this isnt my opinion. just providing evidence to the contrary.

Tnh I dont realy determine a pup to be a potato solely off looks, bad stats is what makes me determine if the pup is a potato. Its just more of a potato if it has less than 200 base stats with a beige base and no markings.

Edit: A bad looking wolf can always be cuztomized but bad stats just slow down breeding for better stats. In wolvden stats play a huge part in gameplay, newbies should be able to get some cheap high statted pups instead of being spammed with a bunch of bad statters in the tc that they dont know how to utilize yet

Edit 2: Not to mention the TC being over crowded with potatoes lessens the value of actual good wolves or makes them insanely impossible to find. I always try to label my trades so people get a really good feel of what the wolf is before they even click on the trade but still a wolf i post with 115 strength wont sell for days just bc the TC is overcrowded with potatoes
