📋 ORGANIZED ITEM LABELLING 📋 (e.g. Food: Rat, Herb: Tansy)

📋 ORGANIZED ITEM LABELLING 📋 (e.g. Food: Rat, Herb: Tansy)
Posted 2020-12-09 01:24:29 (edited)

Hello! Here is my suggestion:

Rename items in the hoard to begin with the category they belong to.

For example:

Carcass: Rat                         OR          Food: Chicken Egg
Carcass: Whitetail Doe        OR          Food: Rat
Egg: Chicken                         OR           Food: Whitetail Doe

Herb: Buffaloberry
Herb: Carrionflower

Feather: Owl
Feather: Parrot

This would make it much easier to navigate through your hoard & list of your items in the trading centre to find the items you seek to either bury, dig up, or sell, because items of the same type would be listed out beside each other.

This would be especially useful for when you can't remember the name of an herb/carcass/etc but know its picture, and want to look through all your herbs without having to flip through pages in your hoard trying to find it among carcasses and whatnot.

AFTER

OR:

After speaking in the comments, here's a summary of what we've come up with:

OPTION 1: New Naming (e.g. Food: Chicken Egg, Food: Weasel -- OR Egg: Chicken, Carcass: Weasel) +/- Category symbols + Sorting Options (by category, by alphabet, etc.) + Option to Filter (e.g. food-type items, amusement, etc.).

OPTION 2 (suggestions from #21142): Current Naming + Category symbols + Sorting Options (by category, by alphabet, etc.) + Option to Filter (e.g. food-type items, amusement, etc.).

BIG big support. I sell most of my smaller food items to the Raccoon, and it's just... a massive pain to either scroll through dozens of items (in a tiny box, that only even shows five items at a time), or individually search for 'carcass', 'egg', 'meat chunk', etc etc etc... It'd save so much time if I could just search 'Food' and have all my food items appear at once.

I support the cause here but not the solution, this name change just looks unattractive IMO. I'd much rather it be possible to sort or filter those lists by type. The hoard already has a filter by type option, although I would prefer a one click solution if possible (buttons to filter only that type, for example.) "Sort by" in the hoard could also use a by type option, so that it shows you everything in your hoard but grouped by type.

Just wanted to say that there is a little hidden trick you can use in those item picker things. They said they would add some documentation about it when they can but for now you can type in: "type:food" (or "type:amusment", etc.) and it will show you only those types of items.

(lol i don't know how to tag / if we can tag people)

@5311, thank you for letting us know! I had no idea about that trick, and that's definitely useful. I would prefer that it would be as easy as simply searching "food" to see all the food items via my suggestion, but this definitely performs the same function and would work well if it wasn't totally hidden. Thanks again for pointing it out!

@21142, I see what you're saying and I can respect the personal preference. That's a good point about the Hoard already having a "Sort By" option, but my issue is that I want a bit more specificity than just "Food" vs "Amusement." For example, having all the eggs grouped together with "Egg: [anima]," or having the feathers grouped together with "Feather: [bird]." The purpose this serves is that it allows for further organization. So for example, if I wanted to construct Nesting Material, using my labelling method or something close to it would allow me to see in one spot/line how many feathers I have available to use. My suggestion would also make it so that you don't need to click ANY buttons, everything is already organized in the hoard simply by default naming/labelling. I get that the naming could be unattractive for those that share your preference though! I personally think it looks fine.

Ah, I see then. I think my preferred solution there would be to have 'nesting material' as an available filter, and eggs and feathers can already be located by searching 'egg' and 'feather' respectively, unless they add one that doesn't have egg/feather in the name (??)

You may not have to click buttons, but you still have to browse through pages in your hoard to find things (which might mean clicking a lot more buttons if you have a big hoard?) If you intend to use this by searching the name of the category, surely it'd be better to just add more of the typable filters Squiffle described since it'd function the same? (thank you for pointing that out btw, I had no idea :o I just tried it out and it turns out you can also just type the category name ("food" etc) in the tc search and it works the same.) That, plus an overall sort option to sort the hoard by category, would seem to cover everything, without needing to rename everything? I think?

Another, more objective reason that I don't like in-name labeling is that there's only so much space for the item name in the hoard, and when a name is too long it just cuts off. The medicines already cut off like that and it's... not pretty. A lot of items wouldn't, but many would, especially decors. Like here's two rows of items from raccoon wares, edited via inspect element. Some get cut off that previously weren't, and the ones that already were become very obscured.

Those are good points! I guess some of that comes down to preference, whether you'd rather type in "herb" or click a few times on a drop-down organization menu.

I get your point on the "not pretty" look of having a name cut off. I don't personally mind it, but if the devs are looking at this thread, then I'd rather we get a solution that benefits everybody.

I have a tweak to my suggestion, then, which feels kind of silly but might solve the issue?? Instead of writing "Herb:" or "Egg:" devs could just put a little symbol at the start of the label to indicate an item's type, and to make it so that items of the same type follow one another. This would also remove the need to include "Egg" or "Carcass" in the names of items, making the names shorter and thus reducing chance of cutting off.

I've included a silly little example using emojis 😛. I would recommend devs create their own symbols

For special use like Osha, instead of saying "Special Use" and taking up all that space, it could just have a ✨ sparkle symbol, for example.

Also, instead of "Background:" they could use sensible abbreviations like "BG:"

Ghfghdfgh I. Now I think the best thing is to have the current names, but with category symbols for easy visual scanning, the option to both sort (by category and then alphabetically, so functionally the same as the original suggestion) and filter (so you can search type:whatever to get that type) both tc/raccoon lists and your hoard by category, and also have searchable subcategories for specific uses (so like subtype:nesting or whatever, I dunno.) I think that covers everything? Seeing items in your hoard grouped by category, searching for items of a specific purpose, and searching for categories.

Also if you took 'egg' 'carcass' 'feather' etc out of item names you'd end up with multiple items named the same thing, other than the symbol, which seems like it could be logistically annoying.

Trust me, I know, I was giggling the whole time making that graphic. 😛

Ugh yeah, I realized that when I was doing the grouse graphic that there was a grouse feather too, and whatnot. For me, that wouldn't really be a problem as long as the image of the item + the category image were there to differentiate, since searching "grouse" for example, would just bring up the two item options: carcass or feather, and in the TC or w the Raccoon it would still be alphabetized, so you'd have grouse carcasses list out above your grouse feathers, etc.

BUT, I think that would cause issues for the "select all" function if you only want to sell, say, your grouse carcasses and not the feathers, and only searched "grouse." I guess for that, I would like for the category symbol to include an unseen, implicit "carcass" / "feather" tag that would make the right item pop up if you searched "grouse feather."

I've added your suggestions to my top/original post! Thank you, feel free to keep adding if you have other ideas/concerns

Idk, I just don't see the point of taking egg/carcass/etc out since it usually doesn't make the name too long for the box? Anyway,  good discussion! Have a good night/morning/whatever time it is where you are C:
