"The scent lead you to a strange wolf"

I've seen this a  few times, and only managed to befriend one, but I can't seem to find what's "strange" about her. Is there any point to this "special" encounter, or is it just for flavor?

I believe "strange" in this context means unknown wolf, like a stranger. Special wolves are unlocked starting at level 10 and are marked by stars. ^^
