Storyteller Role

Storyteller Role
Posted 2020-11-05 18:10:34 (edited)

Now after doing some reading through the forums I haven't found anyone suggesting to be able to assign your pack an Omega Storyteller so here's my thought on it!

Now in a real life wolf pack the Omega  I'm thinking the Storyteller is the stress reliever who helps keeps moods up, now I was thinking this could come into play with wolves losing mood each day. For example if you have an storyteller in your pack your members could lose a little less mood each day and this increases each level your omega levels to, too a cap at 5% I would say.

(ie. a level one 1%, so wolves lose 9% mood a day instead of 10%, a level 10 5%, so wolves only lose 5% a day)

I feel if this is implemented it should be similar to breeding male, with only one wolf getting the spot at a time and having to pay to remove them. Another thing I think should come with Storyteller is not allowing the wolf in this position to breed unless they are retired as they are there to keep tradition and tell the packs lore.

I also feel this can help with people who struggle finding toys, as it has already been said play/tussle/groom won't be added into the game.

Feel free to suggest any ideas you have on this and why/why not you think it should be added!

((edit: here is info on real life wolf pack omegas: here, here, here))

here is an edition by QueenofFrowns I quite like:
"Okay, what others just said gave me an idea. The storyteller role can be used on a lead in transition for retirement/death to help the new leader "transition" into the lead role. This would make it so while the former lead/storyteller is around that the scouting areas are not cleared out entirely and territories can be rescouted faster rather than having them wiped. Once the lead dies, whatever wasn't fully rescouted will be wiped and need to be rescouted fully.

This would have a starting age that it could be used and a fixed amount of time. You'd lock-in your leads replacement once Storyteller is activated.

The other roles can have apprenticeses. But this would be the sink or swim passing of the torch to the new leader.

Like all roles, Storyteller Role is not mandatory.

Just an idea. You guys can hate on it or tweak it all you like. I'm not attached."

Actually in real life omegas are observed to be one of the higher ranking wolves in the pack due to their coat coloration and the importance of their role, which often suggests they get the richer bits of the kill! In real life wolf packs the only wolves that ever breed really are the alpha male and female as packs function in sort of ragtag family units. :-]

Otherwise I really really like this idea and would be a great way to implement playing with your wolves instead of being forced to use amusement items!

I don’t support, simply because the whole alpha/omega hierarchy isn’t true for wild wolf packs irl and as far as I’m aware this game is meant to be based mostly on reality

@Bobbie @Pleasent added a few articles about the omegas in real wolf packs!

In real life wolf packs don't actual have Alpha/Beta/Omega anythings. They consist of a mated pair and their family. To quote an article on Sketchy Science:

'The alpha wolf theory is based on an observational study undertaken in the 1940’s by biologist Rudolph Schenkel. The theory gained popularity in the 1970's when L. David Mech published his book The Wolf: Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species. Unfortunately, most scientists (including Mech himself) know that they alpha theory is based on faulty extrapolation. Mech has actually been trying to get the book out of print for a number of years

You see, when Rudy Schenkel was watching wolves and making notes, he overlooked one important fact: the wolves he was studying were in captivity. Their pack was not the kind that formed naturally in the wild; it was made up of adult wolves forced to live together and compete for resources. Not surprisingly these wolves fought a lot and the dominant ones got their pick of food and mates. This study has been compared to learning about the behavior of human families by observing people living in refugee camps. '

I am happy that the WD Staff don't seem to be interested in perpetuating the bad science around wolves and hope they do not include anything more around than the optional, non-mechanic affecting Titles you can give your Lead & Featured wolf now. While it is a common trope in media and can be an interesting structure for individuals to write lore around, it's not something I want to see carried over again in another wolf sim's mechanics.

No support; agreeing with siren! Wolf packs, shown in recent studies, are consisted of a male and a female, and their pups. The whole alpha/omega dynamic in packs was debunked years ago on the count of the observed wolves being in captivity, not in the wild.

@ UnheardSiren hmm I understand where you coming from with that, perhaps something like Storyteller could be an interesting name replacement

That would honestly take my only objections away from the suggestion.

I don't know if this idea is too close to free amusement for wolves however, but if it's not I support more roles for our packs as the bigger they get over time the more things I'd like to have for them to do.

thats why I think it should cap at around 5%, so that this doesn't become the end all in amusing your wolves

If the role had more functionality, I'd be down. I was already planning to title one of my wolves as Lore Keeper in the future. So, it would be cool to have an in game role to pair with it.

I don't see much of a benefit for having the role as proposed, however. My wolf can't breed and the mood boost isn't that tempting to me personally.
