Rotting food?

I realized after a while that I’ve been a bit confused about how rotting food works. When my food has been getting the red overlay with the warning “this is starting to rot”, I would toss it out immediately assuming it’s bad. But I was still confused as to why an item supposedly rotting in two days would rot on the next rollover. So I tested this with one of my turkey carcasses that I knew was turning in “2 days”- as expected it’s giving me the warning, but this time I actually clicked through to act as if I’m feeding it to a wolf and it says it has 1 day left.

My question is, is this item okay to feed to wolves without fear of illness? Or is it “starting to rot” mean that it’s actually hit the danger point already? I’m not sure if I’m just confused by the wording and being dumb or if I’ve been doing the right thing in tossing things like I have been. 

Also: I know I could probably feed rotting food anyway and just risk disease but that makes me nervous pfff, plus I usually have a large enough food stockpile that this isn’t a problem.

Rotting food (1 day left) has a chance of giving you an illness with each use you feed.

(known) Illnesses wolves can get from eating rotting food:

• Diarrhea
• Ear Mites
• Fleas
• Tapeworms

You can either sell rotting food to the raccoon, some can also be salvaged into bones (half the uses of the original - 4 bone uses for 8 food uses)

Oh thank you! I had no idea you could salvage them too, that’s really neat. I’ll make sure to sell/salvage what I can’t use from now on, I tend to have a surplus of amusement items so I like to sell bundles of bones and things for GC.

I had a wolf get constipation from rotting food. It was at day 1 I figured that just met it was the last day it was good so whoops learned my lesson there. I wish it changed color the day before it went bad.
