🐾      Intro:  Hello! I am Styx (#95159) and welcome to the 'official' thread for The Wolfie News, a player-run news thread created by me and overseen by a few of us (worker list linked in the second reply/third post). After so long of it being in the works, it is finally ready to see the world :D Please note that this is not the same as the official news updates published weekly by the Wolvden admins! And now, on behalf of all of us, thank you for reading this thread! (Yes yes for those of you who noticed, this is a similar intro as the one I used in the teaser but ahh)


🐺      Rules:  Although you might have seen more news articles like this thread on other game sites, we are the ones implementing this project on Wolvden. So seeing more of this popping up randomly isn't very nice and please don't do it.
🐺      Rules:  All basic WD rules apply too! But that said, please do not mini-mod unless you are one of us (mostly mods, but I'll let it slide if you hold another role). Once or twice might be fine in case it is just a mistake, but more than that. . . You might be blocked :D
🐺      Rules:  Please be respectful to everyone in this thread, and yes, that includes the players you dislike or has beef with. Please don't argue in this thread, be nice to each other, and if you really have to, at least take this to PMs. The pass is your favorite wolf, please put it in the pass section of the form. Rabid Syn #2611: What news are you going to cover that differs from the official news thread?

Answer: The news posts mostly cover the technical stuff, so in the case of a lunar event, it would be new BGs, decors, applicators, etc, while (if we decide to do it) we would be writing something like the effect on economy, interviews with other players, etc. And unlike the news post, we would be more subjective, casual and hopefully funny/interesting. We might post the stuff a bit later than the official news/event's beginning because we need to consolidate things, preferably in 2-3 days. In between events, we might also cover topics and stuff the official news won't, like exclusive interviews (might not be with users :o, more info when we actually do it), happenings around the site, our opinions on things, etc

7/3/24: Quality of Life Improvements



The QoL update we've all been waiting for (and slightly belated, too) has finally dropped on the 5th of March this year. While we all appreciate the efforts of the Admins, we all have mixed feelings about the new changes brought by this developmental update. There are many things that have changed, and so, in the words of the admin(s), let's get straight into it!

Hunting

There are three improved areas, and we'll go through them one by one.
The first one, and we quote "Hunting automatically picks up any reward instead of ending the hunt and then needing to claim the reward."  This improvement might be favored by those who are mobile players or who are just too lazy to click more than once to end a hunt and get rid of the hunting notifications.
The admins also updated the prey 'notification' to go along with this change. When you end a hunt, a new green box would show up below the normal large text chunk that tells players how their hunters fared during the hunt. The new box would show players what reward their party has caught.
While this change might be weird to adapt to at first, it would probably benefit the hardworking joints of the WD players long term.
Definitely an improvement! It's more convenient to only have to click once after all, the information fits neatly on one page (hunt summary & prey caught) i like this change! ~ lollybugz #36307
There isn't much to say for the second improvement, but if you're someone who likes to log hunting results in detail, this might be helpful for you.
The third update allows you to stop losing those precious hunts if you're unable to finish them before the end of a rollover, as the system now counts hunts when they are sent, instead of when you end them. It means That's great for those who are stingy with hunts, and doesn't affect the rest of us negatively either.
Anyway, moving on to the next category. Don't worry if you see that I'm missing some points. They're likely in the other category.

Wolves
Ouch, a few of the updates for this very large category are… icky. Well, it means there's more interviews and interesting opinions, hopefully.
Alright, so the first one is one that I've been secretly hoping for ever since I realized that my stud's pups, if they disappeared, won't show up for me to enjoy in his family page. Well sure, it might cause lag because there are more wolves to load, especially for those large names that has thousands of pups, but since it doesn't include chased offspring and those whose dynasty records are not saved, it won't be that bad. And for those that are kept by their owners, you might just like to look at them in your spare time.
I don't see much use for normal wolves, however, because you'd most likely own the pups, so all it would be useful for is to show the amount of pups your wolf produced-
It would make it less painful when your T3 pups die, at least.
The second one isn't useful, because if a wolf is a potato, even if it's a chased potato, you'd probably rechase it anyway. A badge doesn't change much. Moreover, I did some digging and in the Game Development post regarding this, there was a concern raised. So user #7152 mentioned that it might instead cause newbies to buy the wolves at a higher price than they're worth, thinking that the wolves are special because they have a badge, when in reality, they are not very different from the default NBWs.
And for the third update in this category, we have the Enclave in spotlight. Some supports it, while others like Bakugou #19886 (I'm not a fan of it at all. I think they should have kept it the way it was - releasing all the pups after rollover. The waves are too spaced out and I think it ruins the fun of enclave) are more reserved about this change. While the new wave-release pattern might help those who are in time zones not suited for enclave hunting, it is much harder (practically impossible) to track where a pup might be based on its release time.
What does that mean? It means you need to be either really lucky, or really knowledgeable about pup bases and markings to get a good puppy, and not just by stalking the main chat because the pups will be randomly assigned to a wave upon being enclaved. Although that is technically cheating…
Anyone interested in going puppy shopping four times a day? If you are, great! Because it's gonna lag even if you don't.
And then we have the cave ordering. The advice that was given back in 2020. While we were able to get around the previous system with numbers we put before our cave names, the new system will help us greatly because we no longer need to add the numbering before our cave names. Looks more aesthetic, don't you think? Way overdue, but better than never. From the Game Dev post, there wasn't anyone against this idea either, especially since the way of reordering the caves the Admins implemented is quite efficient. It has to be one of my personal favourites from the update.
The last one is a true QoL update. It does make people's lives easier when you can differentiate between things better, but there's not much to comment on, except maybe the not nested icon. Although one of the Notifications improvements give nesting warnings in rollover messages, it's just nice to have a second reminder either way.
Moving on to another chunk of the Dev Update post, the notifications.

Notifications

Not gonna lie, this is the hardest chunk to write about because there is basically nothing to write for notifications, but I'll try.
The rotting food warning is definitely useful if you're too lazy to check if there is any leftover rotting food after savaging for the bones. After all, for some reason, the meat chunks doesn't have bones, nor does the dead fish or the delicate meat (though these two makes more sense than boneless large meat chunks). Of course, going to the racoon wares also helps, since it has a new little feature that lets you sell rotting food, but not everyone know that. So as long as you are one of those who check daily rollover notifications, you're safe from that problem.
The nesting notice is quite similar to the first one, just appearing in a different spot. But either way, it helps, especially if you have a hunter female that you just refuse to nest until the last moment- And then forgets to do so. Anyone feels familiar about that?
Err another feature that has been asked for for quite some time is the autonesting/feed all play all notification update. For those who don't know what FAPA is, it feeds and plays all of your wolves (or specific groups) in two clicks. Both are quite helpful for big packs, but there are an issue. Before the Dev Update, players are not told that their autonesting and FAPA are gone until they find out for themselves.
FAPA is comparably easier, because you still need to click manually to feed, and realizing that the option has disappeared pretty much tells you that you need to pay up again. But you won't realize that autonesting is gone until you either are diligent enough to check or if you lose litters. Painful, isn't it? Great that they're finally implementing it! Hopefully it will keep more pups from stillborning.
The heat labelling change is good too, because it prevents players from going 'I swear it has 4 rollovers of heat left!' before realizing that their wolf is way too old to breed. Effective against regretful procrastination. The second part of this improvement lets players let go of their technically useless females early, instead of having to wait until they become elders to realize that oh, they could have abandoned the girls as soon as they weaned their last litter. Bad luck for the wolves, but good luck for the restricted den spaces. Now they can shoo as soon as they become useless heat-wise.

Great news for those who don't check their pups very closely! You can now find out if one of your hunter pups randomly obtained spontaneous blindness. But honestly, it's nothing bad. Even if you absolutely loathe mutations for some reason, then in that case, the notifs signal that one of your pups is about to be yeeted… Nice.
Alright! We're done with the longest parts of the Dev Update. Now, onto the more scattered points.

Forum

Uhh nice convenience for the first one? I'll admit that I've also been looking forward to this faintly, because it feels so awkward to abandon a forum project (hopefully not this one) and have to leave it up there until the moderators remove it. At least for this one, most people won't find it unless they try to look for it intentionally. Thanks Admins.
I'm just going to ignore the other Forum update, and move on to our last part (yaey!)

Others

The recipe crafting might look a little intimidating, with the long list of recipes, especially since you can't really sort it as of now, so you need to look through every single one in order to find the one you want. Though, how it is able to link you automatically to the trades in the Centre is quite useful, a convenient way to price check if you want to buy or sell a particular recipe. Meanwhile, the nesting material crafting area also got its improvements. You can now choose the quantity of items you want to use for crafting by keying in the number instead of manually selecting the items and having the screen zoom in if you're on ipad, which is a lot more efficient.
Custom decor makers will probably feel great if they see a long list of people using their decors, and enjoy scrolling through the list to savor how wonderfully their decors are being used. But some CD users might have some concerns…
Especially if you have interesting decor tastes that you don't want exposed to another person randomly, or just are uncomfortable with the prospect in general.
If I created custom decor, I think it would be fun to see how others use it and how it looks on them. Blocked users' wolves will not show up in the custom decor equipped wolves, so privacy is not an issue. One day when I do end up creating a custom decor, I'll keep an eye on this new feature. That is a solution though, if you're willing to go to the lengths of blocking the CD creator.

But no matter what your opinions on the Updates are, they are reality now, and it probably won't be changed for a few years, so just bear with it even if you don't really like it. Of course, it's best for everyone if we all enjoy the changes tremendously, but from the quotes, we know that isn't very possible. Either way, enjoy the new improvements and reply with your thoughts on the topic if you can!

Note: We're trying out different styles of writing this, so the next update might sound and look a lot more different than this one. Even if you don't like the style we used for this, please don't give up on this project. Instead, if you can, try to tell us the problems you feel we need to correct and we'll take your suggestions in mind when we're crafting our next post. Enjoy your night/ day!
