Adding A New Role Called Sentinels

I would love to have more roles, though I do think they shouldn't be an important or necessary role since you're already pretty tight on wolves in the beginning anyways

I support this too, I had sentinels written into my lore and it would be nice to include them. Plus, if it's a way to train up your wolves/get territory that would be really helpful.

I'm not sure if I can reply on my own post in this forum but I just wanted to say that I love all of the suggestions being added!

Vampirette and many others brought up a lot of good points! I didn't make this very clear in the original post but I had mostly imagined this role as a way of obtaining territory slots. Kind of like how it is in Lioden except instead of just your lead wolf against another, it would be a group of wolves you chose against theirs. Then they would gain their stats by patrolling in your own territory-like the male lions in Lioden do.

I agree it shouldn't be a mandatory role like scouts(if you like to explore), pupsitters(if you want your pups to survive) or the herbalist(if you don't want to spend money on healing your wolves). It should be more like hunters, that are really just another way to feed your pack, earn money or gain stats.

I personally don't think that they would be much of an issue early game if they are given the ability to earn territory because they would earn more slots than they take up if you plan your battles right. I was thinking that they would be a more passive way to PVP(as in you press a button, the computer pits the stats against each other and some random things and you immediately get the answer) but I love Snow's idea to make the battles active like those in explore. I fully support that! :) (Though that would be more difficult to implement)

Just wanted to clarify a few things; of course the devs can do whatever they want with the idea including nothing at all but I just wanted to get my thoughts out.

P.S. I don't think it really matter what they're called I just know that I would find it fun to have another role to play around with! XD

I have a few rather big suggestions related to this actually. 

First would be to separate this idea in to two roles. 


First role would be Patrollers. Now, why would we even need them? We don’t have anything to use them for. However, I think that should change. This whole idea came from the fact that we can find other wolf packs in our home biome. This, in my opinion, shouldn’t be possible. Our home biomes are our territory! So, in order to keep rival npc wolf packs and certain predators out, we should have wolves patrol and mark our territories. Now, I know that they still sound useless, but hear me out. 


This game seems to want to have more focus on realism than lioden, which is perfectly fine. However, one thing that kind of strikes me as odd is the fact that even with a bajillion other predators in our biome/territory, prey is still fairly plentiful. I believe that there should be some form of penalty for allowing other predators to be on our land. Perhaps if the territory isn’t patrolled, the chances of catching prey drop. In real life, if an area was full to the brim with predators, the prey population would be low and I think having that represented here would be cool. 


Additionally, these patrols that are sent out could potentially bring back news like “x told you that they spotted a herd of y near z” or “x told you they found traces of y predator around z”. These could potentially correspond to quests as well, slightly boosting your chance of finding the needed predator/pray. This would probably focus on strength and intelligence. 


And then we have another role- Guardians. Now I know you mentioned them in regards to PVP, but I think they could serve another function- protecting pup sitters. Pups are easy prey, and a large amount of them would no doubt attract some... unsavory guests. With these predators coming in for a snack, your pupsitters would end up needing to fight. Well, fights can lead to serious injuries for the predator, the pupsitters, and the pups. Thus, without anything, pupsitters could get attacked and killed. A few guards who are focused on defending the pupsitters could completely eliminate that risk. 


Of course, these would most likely only really come into play in higher level biomes, giving newer players and players who want to take it easy a chance to get on their feet and to not have to be challenged too much. Of course, the more pups in a pack the more the chances of predators coming around will increase (so if you have no pups then they won’t come around) and in the east biomes prey is still fairly plentiful even if the territory isn’t patrolled. This would give you an option to opt into it as well, as from what I can tell, the only real differences between the biomes your pack lives in are the prey you can hunt and the herbs your herbalist can forage for.

Perhaps Sentinel and Patroller could be the same role, and Patrolling is the Sentinel's non-PvP function? This would fit well if the lead wolf was also involved in the PvP function, because it would mean all the wolves involved needed to choose whether to expend their energy on PvP or on exploring/patrolling, and it would also mean there aren't any PvP-exclusive roles in the game (since some people don't want to do that sort of thing.)

I like the idea of Patrolling as a method of helping out your hunters (and maybe even your herbalist's foraging potential?) in harder biomes. You could have some sort of 'territorial control' meter that affected the efficacy of both of those things, and possibly even the base pup survival rate. Do pups have lower default survival in difficult biomes? If they don't, that could be a thing, with territorial control boosting pup survival.

I like the term Guard for them, and especially like the possibility of gaining territory through a pvp aspect. I've seen some people talk about how pvp attacks could harm your pups and I am very against that. It's hard enough to keep pups alive as is, let alone if other players attacking could potentially drop their health.

But pvping for territory or xp is good and maybe in order to pvp you have to have wolves in this so it's your guard team vs the guard team of the person you're attacking. I've seen a comment about a max of 3 for this and think that would work out nicely.

I support! There are tons of interesting things that can come out of adding a 'sentinel' role and I think it would especially help to give wolves more use and it would make the game more strategic! You'd have to think which wolves have the best stats for hunting, which have the best for scouting, which have the best for herbs, and which have the best for fighting!
