โ๏ธ ๐ป๐๐ช ๐: ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ฃ, ๐๐๐๐ฃ ๐ โ๏ธThe sloping mountains and glistening lakes of Delphi Valley are situated in Connemara, on the west coast of the island of Ireland. The picturesque area is some distance from the nearest human settlement, is teeming with flora and fauna indigenous to the region and is rich with ancient Gaelic monuments and tombs. Here, the first efforts to revive the legendary Irish Wolf, which had been hunted to extinction during the Cromwellian conquests, are tentatively under way. The region is currently overpopulated with wild goats and deer, and with no natural predators, pose a threat to plant life. It is hoped that the reintroduction of wolves will not only restore balance to the ecosystem, but also regain a lost part of the Irish spirit. The project begins with Alpha Boru, named after the legendary High King of Ireland, Brian Boru. We have also introduced a female, Sive, whom we hope will get along well with Boru. It's not an easy start for these two wolves: the season is winter, and as is the norm in Ireland, winters are both cold and wet, with the chill seeping into your very bones. Particularly in the case of the west coast, strong winds will often howl through the valley and obscure the mountain tops in thick cloud cover, thus plunging everything into shadow. Snow and frost is also not uncommon at this altitude. Luckily tonight was a clear - albeit quite windy - night when Alpha Boru was spotted chasing after a critter in the forest. Sive was also seen flitting between the trees, her silvery coat appearing oddly ghost-like in the darkness... Alpha Boru was clearly the more energetic and faster of the two wolves, and was keen to make it well known to Sive, who was keeping an eye on him - and the prey - and did not exert too much effort in the hunt. Indeed, it seemed more like the wolves were playing with the poor critter. A game that perhaps served a more important purpose for the wolves than simple fun. The pair played with their prey until the first rays of the sun, as the mist began to roll in over the mountains, bathing everything in a soft pastel pink blanket. ๏ฝก โยฐเผบโค๏ธเผปยฐโ ๏ฝก

One could only guess why our two wolves, Alpha Boru and Sive, decided to spend their time playing in such conditions. One such guess would be their need to explore their new territory, as well as to bond... They were spotted playing with critters in much the same way as yesterday, though this time they were lead out of the cover of the trees and into high plains, which were at this time exposed to the awful sleet. Alpha Boru was not discouraged, however, and kept on seeking prey. Sive was less enthusiastic about running around in the cold wet, and fell behind soon after, slinking back into the woods. As was expected, Alpha Boru gave up on his performance as soon as he realised Sive was no longer in the audience, and followed after her. After the dark clouds and the spitting rain had eased, the night brought the much needed calm. Alpha Boru and Sive were once again seen active, but kept their activities within the limits of the forest. Although Alpha Boru is eager to explore Delphi Valley, it seems Sive isn't as comfortable in open spaces as he is, and often returns to the forest not long after. Boru has displayed patience and encouragement, clearly enjoying her company. Sive, meanwhile, is a little more reserved, prefering to keep to herself, but not so much that she would risk disrespecting Alpha Boru's authority, whom she has appeared to accept as her superior. During the night, Sive had gotten in a minor altercation with a lynx and received a small scratch on her nose. She seemed quite happy with herself after she had brought a grouse carcass as an offering to Alpha Boru. ๏ฝก โยฐเผบโค๏ธเผปยฐโ ๏ฝก

Alpha Boru and Sive shared a grouse carcass from yesterday and spent much of the day running around and exploring their territory - which was perfect, as the winter's day was gloriously clear and crisp! A ghostly mist danced upon the surface of the lake near the forest, where the two wolves refreshed themselves and were quite playful throughout, splashing around the waters like curious puppies... Sive seemed a lot more confident, and we are delighted to see her warming up to Alpha Boru. The two are getting along great so far, and we have high hopes for a future mating pair! At any rate, we have figured out that Sive appreciates a good bit of sunshine, when she can get it, and we can't blame her! Curiously enough, we have also been paying closer attention to the strengths and weaknesses of the pair as far as hunting goes. While tracking seems to fall mostly under Alpha Boru's responsibility, chasing is pretty equally shared between the two, varying slightly at times. Dealing the finishing blow is Sive's domain - a role which Alpha Boru isn't yet comfortable with sharing. This perhaps betrays a slightly more domineering nature in him than we initially thought, though we also hope that this is due in part to lack of experience and novelty in the companionship itself. Regardless, hunting today was a bit more earnest than we have witnessed until this point. It was Sive's turn to show off today, and she executed each kill with swiftness and grace, despite the prey being quite meagre for two wolves, it's a victory nonetheless! They both appear healthy, with shiny coats and lots of youthful energy to go around. Finally, we were quite surprised and breathtaken when, in the later hours of the night, during a light snowfall... We heard the howling of wolves echoing throughout Delphi Valley. We listened in silent awe to the soulful howls which were most likely last heard in Ireland over three centuries ago... Yes, there were tears, and there were chills. If only this pair knew how much it means to us... And reminds us why we have undertaken this expensive and risky project in the first place. It was a rather wet start to the new season, with much of the day having that typical Irish weather - overcast with sunny spells and random showers of rain here and there. We were intrigued to see the pair of wolves running around the forest and lake areas in the early hours of the morning. There was some uncharacteristic barking and growling, indicating that Alpha Boru and his female packmate were having a row over something, as far as we could tell. There was no biting or aggression between the two, luckily. Why were they so frustrated with each other? Upon closer look, it was noted that the two wolves were searching for something. Were they tracking new prey? However the way they went about it indicated confusion. They returned to the forest a few times, where we knew their den was located and where they normally brought any prey that they had caught... And then it became clear - their stash of carcasses was missing! After a few hours Alpha Boru and Sive realised in one way or another that neither of them was the thief in the night. They put their noses to the ground and eventually located a fox den burrowed at the edge of the forest west of the lake. We knew that the female fox located in that specific area had given birth to fox kits that same night, and the carcasses that were snatched from the wolf pack was used to support their expanded family. Alpha Boru and Sive approached the den with a strange sort of caution, clearly smelling the new kits. The male fox, identified as the thief, was protective and territorial over his family, despite standing no chance against two large wolves. We watched with bated breath, wondering whether Alpha Boru and Sive would attack and leave behind bloodshed, or forgive and forget. Indeed, we watched for what seemed like hours. The wolves had moved some distance away from the den, but stayed in the area, wandering around within sight of the male fox, who never took his eyes off them... It was safe to say that, by sunset, the wolves had decided it wasn't worth it. They had managed to catch a small bird they shared between themselves, and that satisfied their well-fed bellies. They played afterwards, and Sive was showing more affection than she had done before, which surprised our Alpha a few times. Indeed, towards the end of the night he was seen trying to avoid her, while she was seeking him out, instead of spending time by herself as she usually does. Curious. We're glad the incident with the fox ended peacefully, and we hope our wolves have learned not to leave their food out during the night! ๏ฝก โยฐเผบโค๏ธเผปยฐโ ๏ฝก

Despite the rain dominating the skies, we have observed Alpha Boru and Sive being very active and playful with each other. We are confident at this point that Alpha Boru and Sive are a mated pair, based upon our observations today... There's some indication that Sive (whom we will refer to as Alpha Sive henceforth) is also in heat! We weren't exactly sure about it yesterday, but now that Alpha Boru is used to Sive's new displays of affection, it's quite clear what her intentions are at this time. In general, the two wolves spend a lot of time training and improving their skills as hunters. Today they attempted to hunt a prey larger than they have been going for thus far, and although they were unsuccessful in their pursuit, it's exciting to watch them grow more bold and comfortable in their environment. ๏ฝก โยฐเผบโค๏ธเผปยฐโ ๏ฝก

Much of the first half of the day was spent sheltering in the forest, though there was a particular interest shown toward observing and tracking wild hare. The pair are quickly gaining confidence and familiarity within their surroundings, particularly the forest where their den is located, and the lake area. Toward the latter half of the day we observed the wolves venturing westward to the mountains, where they were able to trap a small bird during their exploration of the new terrain. During this escapade, both of the wolves showed slightly too much confidence and lost their footing a few times, resulting in minor injuries. Embarassed, the pair trotted back down the forest, where they tended to each other's wounds. The night once again was filled with majestic howling, though we did not see them in the darkness of the woods, at times we could have sworn there was a whole pack in there... ๏ฝก โยฐเผบโค๏ธเผปยฐโ ๏ฝก

โ๏ธ ๐ป๐๐ช ๐: ๐๐ก๐ฃ๐๐๐, ๐๐๐๐ฃ ๐ โ๏ธYesterday's rain persisted into the morning, during which time Alpha Boru and Alpha Sive - having recovered from their wounds - decided to venture out into the mountains again. Why the risk in the wet and the mud? We can't say at this time, but it's clear they have found something of interest up there. Perhaps the high vantage point gives them a better view of their territory. In any case, they were able to catch another bird and bring it back down to their den towards midday, when the rain began clearing up. The rest of the day was mostly overcast, with short sunny spells. After lunch, Boru and Sive went out to explore the easternmost edge of their territory, where they were lucky to come across a distracted porcupine. Dinner is sorted! ๏ฝก โยฐเผบโค๏ธเผปยฐโ ๏ฝก

Alpha Boru & Alpha Sive once again spent a considerable amount of time in the mountains, which is making us wonder if the pair have relocated their main den area away from the forest. Did something in the mountains entice them to leave? Or is there something in the forest driving them away? Further research & obervation is required. Hunting has been fairly successful for the pair - it seems like playtime is over, and the wolves are more focused on becoming the apex predators of Delphi Valley that they are meant to be. They've even attempted to chase after a wild mountain goat - unsuccessfully of course. Although Sive has a better handle on the mountainous terrain, Boru is lacking the same confidence, and ended up losing his footing and tumbling down a few feet. Thankfully, there were no major injuries and it looks like he's healed up already. This in itself is a curious observation - for if Boru isn't as comfortable in the mountains, it must be Sive who is leading him up there. Maybe it is the goats that had caught their interest? There's quite an abundance of them in Delphi, and it was one of the main reasons why we got the green light to start this wolf project. Observing them has proven to be difficult after midday, as the clouds rolled in and obscured the whole valley almost completely. In addition, there was some unexpected snowfall. When the clouds had cleared up a little towards the night, the mountains looked like they had been sprinkled with icing sugar... โ๏ธ ๐ป๐๐ช ๐ก: ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ฃ, ๐๐๐๐ฃ ๐ โ๏ธSummer is off to a very stormy and un-summery start. Observing the pair has proven to be difficult. We spotted them in the high plains during lunchtime, apparently on a hunt, but they returned to the shelter of the forest with only a small bird carcass to share between them. In other news, we are planning to set up a few cameras throughout Delphi Valley to aid in our observation. Early in the morning, while it was still relatively calm, we set up our first camera in the forest. An old path passes through the area, near the den. We haven't captured any images of the wolves yet, which is fine, as we are still testing our equipment. Here is the first shot from our new set-up:  We hope to livestream this camera during the night, but we'll see how that goes. ๏ฝก โยฐเผบโค๏ธเผปยฐโ ๏ฝก
