☘︎ 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝟚𝕆: 𝕎𝕚𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕣, 𝕐𝕖𝕒𝕣 𝟚 ☘︎Today is the first anniversary of Delphi Valley pack! It's hard to believe we're already here, and quite a lot has happened since. We observed our two wolves hunting some easy prey not far from the denning site, but as the sun started going down, Sive retreated to the den and ate up a whole grouse carcass - well, almost all of it. The leftovers were Boru's. Her appetite has grown as much as her belly. We should be expecting pups soon, though we worry about how they'll do in such a cold environment... The den, at least, is warm and cosy and we already know from experience that Boru will make a great father. ｡ ₊°༺❤︎༻°₊ ｡

☘︎ 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝟚𝟙: 𝕎𝕚𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕣, 𝕐𝕖𝕒𝕣 𝟚 ☘︎We were surprised, and perhaps a little bit concerned, when we observed no activity from the wolves all day until nightfall. As far as we could tell, the pair were cooped up in their den. As the sun went down, snow started setting in, and visibility was poor. We did spot Boru in the eastern side of the forest, but Sive wasn't seen until later that night, helping Boru take down a wild sheep - a significantly tricky prey, particularly in these conditions. Sive was full of energy today, compared to the past few days, though she did appear somewhat "deflated". Some of our experts at the centre are positive the female has given birth, as we have been tracking her behavior and physical changes for a while now. We won't know for sure until the little pups start moving about, however, given the harshness of the season, it could take too long and we could miss some important updates, so we are planning to set up another camera facing directly toward the den. We will need to find a safe and quick way to implement our equipment as soon as possible. As far as the pups go, we are hoping for at least three or four in the litter. Their survival chances aren't looking good, statistically speaking. It will be a celebration if even one makes it! Stay tuned for more updates! Fingers crossed for the pups! ｡ ₊°༺❤︎༻°₊ ｡

☘︎ 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝟚𝟚: 𝕎𝕚𝕟𝕥𝕖𝕣, 𝕐𝕖𝕒𝕣 𝟚 ☘︎It was - thankfully - a peaceful day at Delphi Valley. Boru & Sive seem to be only hunting as much as they need to survive - and no more. Since there is no one else to watch the pups, they both try to spend as much time with them as possible. They hunt smaller prey in order to be able to bring the carcass back to the den easier, and they keep within the forest as much as possible. Aside from hunting, the pair are focused on keeping the pups warm and safe. We are still working on camera equipment, but given the current weather conditions, we may have to postpone until spring. However, as far we can tell, everyone is healthy. ｡ ₊°༺❤︎༻°₊ ｡

☘︎ 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝟚𝟛: 𝕊𝕡𝕣𝕚𝕟𝕘, 𝕐𝕖𝕒𝕣 𝟚 ☘︎Winter may be over, but the challenge of maintaining a fledling pack has only just begun. Sive & Boru have started spending most of their hunting trips just before down and after nightfall. Days here are still short, which means they have plenty of time to go out to get food before the pups rouse - as we assume that daytime inactivity means the parents are with their children. It is risky to leave them alone either way, and certainly an unusual dilemma for any wolf pack. It was an exceptionally windy day today, perhaps a signal of changing temperatures that are to come. Certainly too windy for little puppies to go out and about from the shelter of the forest, as we have finally been able to observe. From what we could tell, one of the puppies was awake and unwilling to let its mother - which would be Sive - to leave. We were curious how she would handle the situation, as we have seen little interaction back when she was the adoptive parent to puppy Delbhna. Sive was patient and gentle at first, leading the stray puppy back to the den where the rest of the puppies were. No sooner had she done so, that the puppy went waddling off again, and had even begun crying, which could hardly be heard over the wind in the trees. Sive returned to the pup a second time, and was unsympathetic - perhaps worried that the pup's crying would rouse the other pups and ruin her hunting trip. Boru, meanwhile, was oddly nowhere to be seen during this. We couldn't exactly tell what had happened, as our recording equipment is fairly sparsely situated around the territory, but from what we gather Sive had been a little too rough on the pup, who was now cowering before the large form of its mother. Lesson one: listen to mother. In other news, we are ready to set up our equipment soon, especially now that we have observed a clear pattern in Sive & Boru's hunting "schedule" if I may call it that. It's also important for us to get a momentary access to the pups, see how many there are, establish their respective gender, and tag them (and name them of course! There already have a few names on the list). If we are lucky and most of them survive to adulthood, there will be more wolves to account for and keep track off, which recording and observation alone won't do. ☘︎ 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝟚𝟜: 𝕊𝕡𝕣𝕚𝕟𝕘, 𝕐𝕖𝕒𝕣 𝟚 ☘︎We have finally been able to confirm some information about the pups! There are four in total - two males and two females, and all about the same size and health. A nice, balanced equation, which we hope signifies a stable future for the pack. The pups have also been named: Gray male is Aengus. Chocolate male is Conroy. Chestnut female is Iseult. and Pumice female is Tara. Further news is that Boru & Sive have caught their largest prey - indeed, the largest prey available in these lands - elk. An impressive and long-awaited feat worthy of a true wolf pack. Delphi Valley alphas have firmly established themselves as the rightful rulers of the land. ☘︎ 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝟚𝟞: 𝕊𝕡𝕣𝕚𝕟𝕘, 𝕐𝕖𝕒𝕣 𝟚 ☘︎Despite the cold, today was a very active day for Delphi Valley pack. It seems that now the pups are finally venturing out of their den and exploring the world for the first time - which is excellent for this time of year when all of nature is being reborn, and wolf pups aren't the only babies waddling about. So far the parents are doing a good job keeping the pups out of mischief while they go on hunting. And speaking of hunting, the winter season has really improved their skills! We've observed the wolves being able to track down and hunt large prey now with relative confidence and calculated risk-assesment. The pair are doing everything they can to ensure the flourishing of their pack, which is good to see! Today they shared their first real "family meal" together with the pups, who have started weaning off milk and learning to eat solid food. It was equal parts a bit gruesome but also very cute. The pups carefully watched their parents and tried to copy them. Tara, one of the female pups, is displaying an independent streak even at such an early time in her development. She is more distractable than her siblings, and was seen quite entranced by a squirrel, which ended up making her lose her footing at tumble down in a particularly tricky part of land. She was crying for her mother again once she got hurt, but Boru stepped in instead, pushing her to eat the whitetail carcass while it was still fresh. Later the pup got to play with a bone all on her own, and the whining was gone... I suppose wolf pups aren't so different from human toddlers! Boru in general spent more time with the kids today, going around to explore the woods and familiarising the pups with their environment and observing some of the avian wildlife that had returned from migration. Iseult - Tara's sister - took a random nap at one point, which Boru didn't approve of. It's exciting to see the pups coming out and starting to show some personality already - we look forward to future developments and hope you are too! ｡ ₊°༺❤︎༻°₊ ｡

☘︎ 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝟚𝟟: 𝕊𝕡𝕣𝕚𝕟𝕘, 𝕐𝕖𝕒𝕣 𝟚 ☘︎Although it was a perfect spring day for hunting and exploring the valley, Boru and Sive were observed hunting only once - when they took down a young buck. The pups are growing well and healthy, showing more confidence in their running and playing. There is a sense of order and respect for the parents - at least for today, everyone was well-behaved as little pups can be. Sive took over from Boru as a mentor and guide for today, and the pups were excited to spend some time with their mother. Conroy especially comes across as somewhat of a mama's boy. While other pups played among themselves or chased after butterflies and lizards, Conroy was instead fascinated by his mother - trying to play with Sive and get her attention any way he could. She obliged him a little bit, which was cute to see, but she was determined to bring all of her pups around the den site to further help them familiarise with their surroundings. Boru was uncharacteristically absent. When we finally spotted him some distance away from the rest of the pack, he seemed irritated and behaved oddly. Frequent scratching of the ears and ignorance of some potential prey that was wandering not too far from him indicates he might have caught some ailment... Most likely ear mites. Ear mites are contagious, and although not lethal, makes it impossible to hunt. If the mites spread to Sive and the pups, that could potentially become a serious problem... We will monitor the situation, as usual, and hope he gets back to his usual self soon. ｡ ₊°༺❤︎༻°₊ ｡

☘︎ 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝟚𝟠: 𝕊𝕡𝕣𝕚𝕟𝕘, 𝕐𝕖𝕒𝕣 𝟚 ☘︎It seems that Alpha Boru is still suffering from ear mites. He continued to maintain his distance from the pack, even though Sive did attempt to find him and managed to interact with him for a short while before the pups demanded attention and he disappeared again... It is very strange to see him so withdrawn, as we are so used to Boru being a social and active wolf. Hopefully he will get better soon and be able to be there for his pups again. In the meantime, Sive has stepped up to pick up the slack, both as an alpha of the pack as well as a parent of four energetic pups. She did all the hunting and training by herself, and we commend her for it. The weather was very erratic, as can be expected in this time of the year at Delphi. The morning saw a mixture of snow and sleet, but this cleared up later toward the day, when Sive was observed playing with the pups and teaching them some skills. Aengus was rewarded with a bone from one of the old carcasses. ｡ ₊°༺❤︎༻°₊ ｡

☘︎ 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝟚𝟡: 𝕊𝕦𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕣, 𝕐𝕖𝕒𝕣 𝟚 ☘︎Today's most important update is probably the fact that Boru's health condition has improved. He returned to the pack and was seen interacting both with the pups and his mate, though a little tentative at first, we were happy to see him back to his old self before long! Although it's technically summer now, the temperatures don't really betray the true season. It was a clear day for the most part, and the pups were active. It was obvious they missed their dad! And that he missed them too. Sive got a bit of a break while he took over mentoring them. Out of all the pups, it seems Conroy is the one who shows the most interest in both of his parents. While all pups adore Boru and Sive, Conroy is more focused when it comes to emulating his parents, and shows a little more maturity than his siblings, who can be easily distracted and tend to give into play every chance they get. Perhaps the most promising development can be seen in Tara, who had a bit of a rough start compared to her siblings. She is now growing healthy and strong, and is none the worse for wear. As a result of her early experiences, Tara displays signs of leadership, and is often the first to do something or check out a new place. Her siblings seem to recognise this and allow her more control during play - going along if she initiates, and backing down if she leaves. If she continues on like this, she could well become the next alpha one day! ｡ ₊°༺❤︎༻°₊ ｡

☘︎ 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝟛𝕆: 𝕊𝕦𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕣, 𝕐𝕖𝕒𝕣 𝟚 ☘︎Exciting update! A new adult wolf has officially joined Delphi Valley pack project. Mjolver is a male grulla wolf of Norwegian descent, he is about three years old. While we could have taken on another pup, because of what happened with Delbhna last year, we decided to play it safe this year on that account - especially since Boru & Sive already have four healthy pups to raise. Mjolver has briefly interacted with the alphas, but so far he maintains his distance, which is understandable. The parents would naturally be very protective of the pups at this time, so if Mjolver wants to become part of the pack, he will have to be very careful with his conduct... Very interesting to see how this will progress moving forward. The pups, meanwhile, continue to flourish and enjoy life. It's early summer and many critters are out and about, and the pups have all become quite enchanted with the local squirrel population. Aengus was the most obsessed out of the four, and spent so much time watching and chasing after the squirrels, that he was later found passed out and napping on a mossy old tree stump, looking very cute! Surely, he has the makings of a true hunter! It's wonderful to see the pups developing more of their personality, and displaying their particular strengths and weaknesses... Conroy and Tara are most like their parents, both possessing early signs of leadership, courage and strength. Aengus would make a great hunter... However, Iseult has yet to really shine. It is clear she loves her siblings, though, and is always seen tagging along with one or the other. She seems like a very balanced little wolf, all things considered. ｡ ₊°༺❤︎༻°₊ ｡
