Arexus blinked rapidly, having been lost in the tale. He had no idea...
As the rain began to fall faster, he thought about how he would reply.
How could any-wolf respond to a story like that? He found himself silent, still thinking. He didn't want to offend tabitha, and she was the only wolf he could really talk to...
Steeling himself, he replied. "I'm sorry that happened. I never quite realized that wolves would do things like that." He sat in silence for a few moments, listening to the quiet whisper of rain falling around them. "I could help you on your journey, if you want." He spoke in a soft voice, nearly a whisper. He lifted his head, looking at the sunset through the trees. He would hesitate to leave the forest, but...
He wanted a purpose. Something to do other that laze around the wood, wasting the hours.

Tabitha felt another opportunity to lighten the mood for herself and Arexus. She didn't want him to feel bad for her, as she knew no wolf with the same level of sympathy.
''Huh... Me? Stuck with you? Perhaps my journey was supposed to come to this?''
She grinned under her tears, which she then proceeded to wipe away with her paws.
''I don't want to stay here... but if you don't want to either...''
The rain water was pH7 neutral which contributed to the soothing of Tabitha's allergen-stricken skin sores. She was feeling a lot better. The crickets chirped louder, and a tiny rumble of thunder bounced between the heavens. Her tail began to wiggle slowly.
''I think I would like that.''

Arexus smiled slightly, somewhat spooked by the rumbling thunder. "I'd be glad to travel with you. I like the woods, but one gets bored of the same surroundings every day." He yawned, thoughts already drifting to the adventures they might have.

He was glad she had lightened the mood, he had always been a sensitive wolf, and didn't like things too somber. "If you still want to head east, we could set out as soon as these eggs are eaten." He poked one of the two with his paw. "No sense in wasting food." He was glad to see Tabitha's wounds heal, the rain seemed to be having an effect. He yawned once more, the gentle patter of rain soothing him.

''Very well.''
Tabitha was feeling okay with the idea of a travelling partner. It was certainly new, but she welcomed it. The rain continued to pour, but at the moment it was a little more gentle. The individual splashes of drops on nearby forage could be heard. The crickets searched for cover and there was a loud toot, coming from a nearby tree. Very likely an owl.
She lay there in silence just looking at Arexus whilst he was taking in the sense of soothing relief. Tabitha rarely met lone wolves with such a cautious approach. She thought to herself that maybe he hadn't been alone for long and it was all a new experience for him.
''I'm not hungry. Feel free to finish those eggs. We can find something more delicious later.''
What Tabitha had not said was that she genuinely dislikes the taste of eggs, but how could she be picky about food if there was a chance that there was only that to consume for a long time? Perhaps that explains why she is so lean in weight.

Arexus happily cruched down on the eggs, enjoying the slightly salty taste. Swiping his tongue over his jaws, cleaning them of egg, he looked back up at Tabitha, waiting for her to signal that it was time to go. He was itching to move, to be out on the trail, where he could stretch his legs and run for a bit.
Tabitha seemed at least somewhat content to lie on the soft earth, and watch him. What was he doing that was so interesting? Was it the way he talked, the way he moved? Had he broken some rule specific to lone wolves that he hadn't learned in his short time on the trail?
Calming himself, he was still, listening to the forest around them.

''You ready?'' she quickly prompted after the last sight of egg pieces disappeared down Arexus' throat.
Her head now raised up, but her body still resting on the ground, she sniffed the air, and caught a sweet scent. It was juniper berries. Fresh as they came, although rumored to be toxic if too many were consumed. It was maybe an opportunity to collect them as part of an emergency food supply.
''We should get some berries. Keep them on us just in case we wander through some area with famine.''
She also knew that berries normally had a contribution to the crafting of medicines. Her survival tactics were unique, and she felt more confident to express her ideas to Arexus. This is because after knowing him for the last 4 hours, it was evident he didn't seem to find any of her motifs to be outrageous or immoral.

Arexus went over to where Tabitha had scented the berries, managing to pluck some from the bush they had grown on. He had no knowledge of medicine, having never needed it, and wondered if these were useful. The strong scent of  juniper berries caused his eyes to water slightly, so he set them down on the slightly damp soil. He had never liked the smells and tastes of plants, preferring a nice bit of elk or deer.
"How should we store these? Wouldn't they rot?" He asked the question while trying to pick more berries, which muffled his voice somewhat.

Tabitha realized that she might have to reveal a little secret of hers. It seemed illogical not to share her skills with Arexus, who appeared to be more useful and trustworthy than other wolves she had met.
''On that night of disaster...'' she said under her breath.
''... there were other remnants left behind from the fallen. I also left my home with a useful piece of gear. They say it was crafted by gods.''
She sat down again briefly and raised her two front paws, exposing her soft belly toward Arexus. Then she reached toward her inner rear leg and parted some fur away, revealing a thin string. It appeared to have been hiding beneath her fur around her upper right quadriceps. She gently rotated the thin string until around rotated a small pouch, which appeared to be tied to the string.
''The other wolves called this a pocket'', she explained.
The item was pale brown, about the size of an apple. It had an even smaller string colored green used as a tightener. It had a bit of wear and scratching, but no actual holes or rips.
''But I call it my mini knapsack. It's simple really. You put whatever you want inside, as long as it's small.''
She detached the tool from her leg-string. She held it with both paws, demonstrating it's ability to contain items and be sealed up for safe-keeping.
''You may have seen something like this before, made from leaves. But this one's different. From the smell it appears to use the skin of... a stallion!''
She fondled on the leather-like material, showing off its durability and resistance to weathering.
''Works well and it doesn't seem to rot. The only bad thing is that it smells funny if it gets wet. We can put the berries inside.''
She hesitated, wondering that maybe Arexus thought that this all along was the reason she was hindered for hunting effectively. She cleared her throat.
''Sorry you never noticed it before.'' She blushed a little as she stowed it back on her 'almost-invisible' string holster.
''As you can see I hide it in a place where other wolves rarely look. It helps to lower their interest in attacking me for my goods.''
She quickly recovered her sit posture, her head leaning over slightly, as if she were almost embarrassed.
