Is Pokémon/Scarlet worth it?

Is Pokémon/Scarlet worth it?

So I've posted a similar board on Lioden, to see what that community has to say, now I want to ask what Wolvden players have to say about it. I've been trying to decide if I should get either Scarlet or Violet. Now I've heard lots of negative things about this game performance-wise. Now I will start off by making it clear that minor to moderate bugs aren't enough to ruin a game for me. If the game is still playable, and the gameplay is fun enough, I can overlook most bugs.

My concern is when I hear "many many bugs make the game utterly unplayable." Now I have no idea how true this claim is, I'm just going off of what I've heard. I've heard from a lot of reviews that the bugs are pretty bad, and that this is the first time Nintendo released a Pokémon game in this state. Who knows, maybe they patched out a lot of the major bugs. I HAVE also heard a few good things about the game though, that it is MASSIVE and completely open world! The behavior of the Pokémon is better than in any other games, and that if you can get past the bugs, it is super enjoyable and is packed with content. Honestly the idea of Scarlet/Violet being truly open world gives me the same feeling of excitement I experienced with BOTW. Still, if a game is like $50, I want to get my money's worth and feel confident about my purchase so I can enjoy the game. I dont want it to crash every 5 seconds. So, that's why I'm here, I want to hear what the Wolvden community has to say, since I tend to value the opinion of the everyday casual gamers, rather than the popular YouTubers and critics. I am willing to look past the bugs if the game is truly as amazing as I've heard some people say, so please, tell me all about what to expect and your experience with the game, if they patched the bugs, the good features, ect (non spoilery to the plot of course). What you liked, didn't like.

The bugs are really bad, the performance is terrible, it crashes kinda often, and the graphics are generally not good. The game autosaves a lot so the crashing doesn't often make you lose progress, but it's annoying. It feels very unfinished in that standpoint and that is kind of hard to overlook. They haven't really fixed this-- for example when you move towards an area, often assets in the background will just pop into existence as you approach them, and it's distracting.

That said, the writing is phenomenal, especially for a Pokemon game. It has my second favourite story of any generation, only after Black and White, and the characters are so, so likeable, and the Pokemon behaviours are so cute, and the new mechanics for the generation are lovely and work very well, and I had a lot of fun with it.

TL;DR: Fantastic game but it runs really badly. If they had worked on it for another year or so it would have been the best generation yet. The bugs suck but if you put in effort to look past them it's a really good game and still worth getting.

Tbh, I played and had no crashes or anything. Definitely some chuggy performance at points - the first hour or two felt the worst to me, not sure if it actually got better at that point or I just got used to it, I assume a little bit of both - and while I experienced some bugs, they were mostly pretty minor (my ride pokemon was standing sideways on a rock once and I could not reach him and he could not move, restarting the game fixed it) and a few fiddly things. I guess overall it to me felt a bit more janky than buggy, really (trying to line up to interact with an NPC/pokemon and the game having me interact with the NPC/pokemon standing next to them instead). Granted, I am an older player and a lot of my gaming days growing up were playing games with tons of pop-in and distant fog because that's just how games were, so I may have a lot higher tolerance for that sort of thing. :')

Like the person above me said, the characters are wonderful, and the story is a vast improvement over most other Pokemon games (lookin' at you, Sword/Shield). I was legit teary eyed at a couple points (though I suppose some similar stuff going on in my RL not too long ago may have had an impact on that too). The pokemon themselves are all great, and having so much VARIETY in pokemon around you as you explore is really, really wonderful. I was overwhelmed with choice for a full team before I even reached the first town-ish area and it was awesome.

If you have a tolerance for a bit of janky bugs, I think it's a really great time, and I definitely would recommend it if you enjoy Pokemon!

i had nearly no graphical issues. I experienced lag when theres a lot of water but with one of the post-release updates it got a lot better. for the record, i usually play docked and that might be a part of why.

I found it to be one of the best pokemon games ever made. the open world gives so much to explore, the story is fantastic, and the new pokemon are cool af.

Poppin in as a Violet enjoyer:

Game overall is laggy on some occassions for me, i.e. water physics/details and oversaturation of Pokémon spawning in, but otherwise runs fairly smooth as of the overworld.

Storyline was actually fairly nice! Albeit it's my first self-owned Pokémon game, so I don't have too much to say. Characters were enjoyable, partially relatable (I stg Arven ), and easy to read to get a grip on personalities. The stories blending into one final, last-hoorah kinda plot actually drew me in more than the seperates lol.

Pokémon themselves are actually quite pleasing. Starters have a theme set that actually hooks me for all three and not just one. Heck, I still use my starter after being post-story for level grinding/exp sharing for roughly 2 months now (finished in late May). Gotta love the dual types no starter line has yet to grasp

The "breeding" system is eh. Just... eh. Could be like the original daycares, but having to picnic, gather the eggs, CLOSE the picnic, and have to hatch them is tedious.

The only thing I'm desperately peeved about is the raids. My god those things are so hot and cold you can't even stay warm without getting cold shouldered by a "You couldn't connect to this raid!" prompt. Especially when Nintendo runs exclusive tera raids for say... a shiny variant (at base rate odds, which is hell in itself when previous tera raid events got postponed due to bugs) of a fixed-encounter-locked 'mon, or version exclusives that you won't get unless you trade and pray. Or, in all the more recent news, final evolution starters from previous games like X/Y. Luckily you can still challenge them solo, but it just brings the raids more life by having others help out.

Also, I will 100% vouch for the rainbow beanie you can choose as a hat. Rainbow beanies ftw.

TL;DR: Decent game, just a matter of how flexible you are with dealing with bugs. Most are small, but tedious. Everything's pretty awesome overall in terms of what's in the Pokédex. Events are mid, but overall game.mechanics are eaay to understand and use constantly.

And if you do happen to get it, 100% recommend doing classes within the school. Teaches some basic Pokémon franchise things like type effectiveness,, alongside game mechanics introduced in S/V!

I don't think it's worth it. Not because of bugs/crashing, but because compared to Arceus and Sw/Sh the game just isn't much fun. It was honestly very disappointing to me after the direction the series had taken recently. The TM crafting especially is really bad. Not gonna go into everything I disliked bc I don't want to get into internet arguments, and the gameplay itself was mostly fine if you can get past the performance issues.

A lot of people dislike Scarlet and Violet, and I completely understand their reasonings, I…..actually liked playing Scarlet.

The starters are quite cute, and don't get me wrong, I like their final evolutions, but I agree that they could've been better. As for the new Pokemon themselves, some of them are indeed weird, but a lot of them have grown on me. For example, at first, I absolutely despised Tatsugiri cause I will admit, I was a little underleveled when going through the lake where the dragon titan was, but now I really think it's cute. I still hate fighting it though.

I can understand as to why people are upset about getting the legendary literally at the beginning of the game, but I do see what Nintendo was trying to do. It's sort of like Sun/Moon, where you meet the legendary at the beginning at its weakest and over the course of the story, you help it regain its strength and eventually, it's true form. Koraidon and Miraidon are not godly like previous legendaries, like say, the Beasts, Mew or Mewtwo, or the Creation trio, but they are practically Apex predators in their time. Since I played Scarlet, I got Koraidon, who I think is a lot better due to how ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE IT IS! The way it acts and sounds really reminds me of Toothless from Httyd.

There's also these variants called Paradox Pokemon, which depending on which game you choose, are Pokemon that are from either the past (Scarlet) or the future (Violet), and are forms of  existing species. For example, Great Tusk is an ancient form of Donphan from Scarlet. Iron Jugulis is a futuristic form of Hydreigon in Violet. I love this idea and tbh, I'd really want to see more of that in the future.

There are three storylines in the game and you can tackle them in any order however you want.

Find and defeat Titan Pokemon (superpowered Pokemon that have been feeding on extremely rare and powerful herbs) to collect these herbs to heal Arven's Mabostiff and upgrade/strengthen Koraidon/Miraidon.

Fight gym leaders all over the region and then challenge the Elite Four and Champion.

Raid the five bases of Team Star and challenge their multiple leaders. Now, Team Star is NOT an evil team, nor is it some fanboy group, or some scummy crime gang. You'll know what they are later, and tbh it's pretty realistic and sad af.

Battling random trainers on your journey is optional in this game. You don't have to fight them, but if you do fight a certain amount of them in a specific area, you get a reward.

There are four other Legendaries called the Treasures of Ruin. Basically, there are these swords hidden all over the map that you have to find and some shrines in order to summon them. And tbh, they're kind of interesting, especially Chi Yu. It's a flaming goldfish!

Your rival, Nemona…….is annoying, but nowhere near as bad as say, Barry from Diamond/Pearl. She's very battle-hungry, wanting to fight you literally at every turn. I know what they were doing here, but you can only really see it when you fight her after defeating the champion. (Nemona herself is A champion, and she desperately wants to find someone who can put up an actual fight and rival her power.)

Also the professor you end up with……..uh……I'm not gonna spoil it, but it's pretty sad once you find out.

The main thing about Paldea is the Great Crater, which is home to an entire ecosystem of Pokemon below the surface, including Paradoxes, which need to be kept in check so they don't escape to the surface and cause problems.

Yet, Koraidon/Miradon are also Paradoxes…..and your legendary acts like Toothless.

Scarlet and Violet is basically Pokemon: The Hidden World.
