Known collectively as the pack's "pathmakers", the wolves in this cave are separated into two roles: scouts and wayfinders, both of which are overseen by the pack's Deputy, who also sleeps in the cave.
The Deputy is the wolf who keeps records of scouts' and wayfinders' reports, as well as sending the respective wolves out on assigned patrols when necessary or asked to by the Leader. Scouts are generally cunning and sneaky, adept at slipping into unoccupied and enemy territory generally undetected. Despite what the warriors may say, the scouts are without a doubt the bravest wolves in the pack, and they have to be, for it takes a certain type of courage to take oneself into possible danger without knowing what or where the danger may be. Wayfinders, also called "secondary scouts", are observant and sensible and put those traits to good use in their roles. If scouts report back about a new rival pack, Wayfinders are sent to the rival pack to attempt to form an alliance. However, Wayfinders also have incredible memories, and are able to determine the best routes to and from the rival pack's camp, different ways in, and where the camp is in relation to theirs. The Deputy records this information from the Wayfinders as a precaution, should an attack ever need to be made.
