You are busy helping a few wolves skin a deer and are lost in thought when a blow to your shoulder snaps you out of your reverie. You let out a startled grunt and turn to the source of the jostle with a frown. The wolf sneer, his dark eyes strangely familiar.

"Watch out," he growls, his voice dripping with disdain. "You're in my way."

He towers over you, his muscles bulging beneath his thick fur. You notice the fur on his shoulders runs down his back and grows on the back of his front legs. You saw others in this pack with this strange characteristic and assumed that all wolves born in these parts have more or less this excess fur, especially the males. Perhaps it's a genetic evolution, their body finding new ways to adapt.

You grit your teeth, refusing to be intimidated by his aggressive posture.

"I was here first. How about you go around?"

The male's lip curls into a snarl, his eyes narrowing.

"You dare speak back to me?" he spits, the words dripping with venom. He shoves you again, his strength nearly knocking you off your feet. He's strong, you can't deny that. The other wolves around you glance nervously at each other, unsure what to do.

But you refuse to back down. Standing tall and proud, you met his gaze head-on. You're fed up with being pushed around.

"I may be new here, but I won't let you bully me," you declare, your voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through your veins.

A low growl rumbles from deep within his throat. His arrogance waver for a moment as he processes your defiance. He isn't used to encountering wolves who refuse to cower beneath him. A gleam of curiosity dances in his eyes before being replaced by fierce determination.

Without warning, the wolf lunges at you, teeth bared, and claws extended. Acting instinctually, you sidestep his attack, narrowly avoiding his snapping jaws. With agility and quick reflexes, you nip at his hind leg as he sails past you.

He yelps in pain and surprise, stumbling momentarily before regaining his footing. He whirls around to face you again, fury blazing in his eyes. But then, something changes. He drops his aggressive posture, and his tail waves low.

"Not bad, new guy," he says, his voice laced with a mix of grudging respect and surprise.

The other wolves around you watch in astonishment as he steps back, his aggressive stance dissipating. His eyes flicker with a newfound curiosity, a spark of admiration that he can't quite hide.

He shakes himself, his thick fur rustling with the movement.

"You've got some skill," he grunts, his voice devoid of its previous hostility. "I can respect that."

A small smile tugs at the corners of your mouth as you realize that perhaps there's more to this male than meets the eye. You had expected him to continue his bullying tactics, but now you see a glimmer of potential friendship. A flicker of camaraderie seems to temper the aggressive chase instinct that runs deep in his blood.

Without another word, he walks around you and trots away, leaving you standing amidst the other wolves, still processing what had just happened. They exchange puzzled glances, their eyes shifting between you and the departing bully.

"Who was that?" You ask out loud.

"Askan," one of them responds. "Torgga's son."

Oh. That explains a lot.

Askan is not... a bad guy. At least, that's what he'll tell you if you ever press him on it. He's just... misunderstood. Born to a rough mother who believes that strength and domination determine your worth, he's been honing his skills as a chaser to prove himself time and time again. He might push around the weaker wolves, but it's not because he's cruel; it's just his way of asserting his place in the pack.

But Askan is more than just a chaser and a bully. He's a complex character with layers that are only beginning to be revealed. Underneath his tough exterior lies a deep sense of loyalty to his pack and a burning desire to protect those he cares about. Askan has a soft spot for those who prove themselves to be brave and resourceful. And though he may never admit it, deep down, he yearns for a real friendship more than anything else.
