Xkiran (pronounced: ski-ron) knew his birthright, and he knew it gave him some measure of impunity. He peppered the hunters with questions when they returned after long days: How did you find the prey? How long did it take to hunt? I bet I'll hunt better than you when I join a hunting team. He ran around the pups' camp and hid in corners as the pupsitters searched fruitlessly for him. He scoffed when his siblings asked wonderingly what lie beyond the pack's territory. After all, everything interesting happened here in the pack, and he had no intention of ever leaving.

But his flippant dismissal of others came to a head in his late adolescence. It was spring, and Xkiran was strong. When his brother Kijelo suddenly attacked him, Xkiran seized the opportunity to prove that he was stronger -- only he wasn't. They fought ferociously, pelts muddied and scratched as they crashed through the undergrowth. When they paused for breath, Xkiran's eyes were wild with rage. When had his brother become just as strong as him? And most importantly, why had no one stepped in to break up the fight, to tell off Kijelo?

And no one spoke up for Xkiran when Nymẹ, his own mother, banished him from the pack.

He was found wandering in the Tundra, straying just a little too close to unnatural things beyond his imagination. The she-wolf that found him recognized him instantly as kin. Their father was infamous throughout the lands; it was hardly surprising he'd met another of his pups so far from home. His half-sister, Alaina began to explain the ways of their pack as she led him towards her home. Their names were not passed through family, but through the blessings of their pack. Blessings Xkiran did not have access to.

Yet.

The more she spoke, the more uneasy he became, but he was surrounded by her pack now, and regardless he had nowhere else to go. Again he was attacked, brutally and relentlessly, by well over a hundred wolves. He could not fight them off, and was quickly brought to the brink of death. The blessings of the pack surged through him, filling his body with a darkness he'd never felt before. The darkness flooded his veins giving him more energy than he had felt even as a puppy.

From then on, he was given the name Kaleb, and paired with a fiery she-wolf that sported the limbs of dragons the future was certain, but more than ever, he felt he'd found the place where he belonged.
