Lilacian was the first of six pups born to Zedekiah and Venom Denim, and with being the firstborn came a natural leader--she was the first to open her eyes, the first to poke her head out of her den, and the first to express a true curiosity in the world around her.

It was only natural her mother and father got so attached to her, with the way she'd sway back and forth on her tiny paws, wide eyes peeking out of the den to watch the sunrise. If only Venom's hands weren't so full trying to take care of six puppies! Lilacian's curiosity was as much as it was a gift as a curse. Scarcely a moment went by that the pup's parents didn't have to shepherd her back to the safety of the den.

It was in one of of these moments that Lilacian's tender life was in the hands of fate; Venom had only dozed off for a few minutes, but knew something was wrong the instant she awoke from her nap. The spot Lilacian typically nursed at was cold, empty. Venom tried to quell the worst of her fears and called for her mate, who had thankfully just returned from a scouting expedition.

"What do you mean she's gone?" Zedekiah's voice trembled as his mate explained the situation, already getting ready to head off once again to find her--she couldn't have gotten far, and he thought he smelled her scent on his way back to the den. Before he could even announce his plans, the two wolves found their blood running cold. A shrill screech broke the air, followed by the sound of hooves thundering away.

There was no doubt in both their minds the shriek was Lilacian! A few pack members immediately scrambled over as Venom and Zedekiah tore out of their den and ran frantically towards the sound. These pack members could only watch the puppies that remained forlornly, as they knew there was nothing they could do. It was a situation that had befallen many a first parents.

As the two approached the clearing the sound had escaped from, their hearts sank: There laying in a pool of freshly spilled blood was their pup, her body flattened by the hoof of an elk. The poor puppy had no idea she had entered one of the trails frequently used by the herds. Whether intentional or accidental, she had been trampled mortally. Venom fell to her child, pressing her muzzle against her daughter's flank as she sobbed in disbelief. "Lilacian! I'm so sorry! My poor baby..."

Venom's tears only spilled faster as she felt her pup ever so slightly reach into her embrace, letting out a sound of comfort in her final moments. At least she wasn't alone. Zedekiah stood comfortingly next to his mate's crying frame, holding her up in her time of despair, but his heart felt just as hollow.

Lilacian mustered her last dregs of strength to speak. "I love...you. It's okay." Her voice was so frail that it seemed it'd break at any moment, her eyes fading and closing shut as she drew her very last breath. So easily, just like that, a life that was once so bright and bold was now gone.

That night, the pack slept safe and sound, all but one wolf accounted for. Despite their age, her brothers and sisters seemed to have known what had befallen their sibling, and the entire family would never forget the sorrow her death brought.
