I grew up alone. Every waking moment was spent wondering when my next opportunity for a meal would arrive, where I would find shelter for the night, when my next sip of water would come, and where I would hide if I smelled anything that represented a wolf’s scent. It was a lonely world for a predator like I was. Nothing wanted me around. Everything was rooting against my survival rather than for it.
Every night, I would experience the same nightmare over and over again like my mind was playing a broken record for me. I could physically feel the heat of the fire. I could hear the whines and the howls of my burning family members. I could smell the flames and the melting flesh of my parents. They were calling my name...“Santasha! Santasha! Santasha!”. Yet, I could do nothing. A small pup like I was, I was powerless against the flames that threatened to drag me straight into their grasp like they had my parents. They had gone after my brother and left me on the sidelines.
I would wake up right as their calling waned down and there was nothing but the roaring flames, who were not quite yet satisfied with just a family of wolves.
We met on opposite sides of a lake. I looked up from where I had been lapping at the cold, clear liquid to spot a monochrome-colored, gray figure on the other side who looked just as surprised to see me as I did him. I’d come to know this wolf as Peril, my second-half - not in a romantic way.Â
He and I survived together for months on our own, chased out of countless territories by other groups, hunting the tiniest of prey. We were skin and bones when we finally came across a small slice of heaven laden with enough prey to support several wolves, water smack dab in the middle of it. He and I deemed this newly-found land as Pale Amour and we’ve been here ever since as the originals.
