The younger half brother of Rain, Nightchaser has been a lone wolf for most of his life, before he reconnected with his brother recently. After his scatterbrained brother ran off, and (in Night’s view, randomly) joined up with a pack he had never heard of, Nightchaser followed after him. After staying with the pack for some time, Nightchaser decided to stick around, both for her brother’s sake, and the growing camaraderie he had with the pack’s lead wolf.
Over time, he opened up to Mist more, and shared his story- he had been born from an affair that his mother had with a wolf named Coal, who was mated to a pack leader at the time. Rain was born from Coal and this leader, while Night’s mother Raven was a dispersing young female who had fallen for the alpha male’s charms. Raven managed to hide the identity of the father for a few months after Night’s birth, but as his eyes faded from blue into a familiar green as he aged, the pack leader discovered the affair.
Raven and her pups were chased out, and managed to eek out a living on the edge of the pack’s territory. Coal would sneak Night and his siblings as much food as he could, while keeping up appearances as the now-loyal mate. Eventually, when Night and his siblings were old enough to fend for themselves, Coal and Raven took off for parts unknown, seeming to want to start their own pack (and lives) anew. The rest of Night’s siblings followed after them- Night, however, did not.
Unlike the others in the litter, he had grown close to his half-brother (and pack heir apparent), Rain- Rain was a gangly adolescent at the time, and was often given pup sitting duties when his mother believed he was not living up to her standards, or was playing with plants too much. This led to the brothers spending quite a bit of time together, and unlike some of the more rambunctious pups, Night was almost always happy to listen to whatever Rain wanted to talk about, and the two grew close. Even after his mother was chased from the pack, Night would occasionally meet with Rain at the border, and now knowing they were brothers, their bond grew stronger.
In contrast, Night always felt out of place with his mother and siblings- his mother seemed distant from him (which was, he suspected, due to his eyes having revealed her secret to the pack, and gotten her exiled). His father was in and out of their lives, and although he did seem to care about them, he always seemed to be more focused on their mother when he was around, and this was confirmed when the pair took off as soon as the pups could hunt on their own. While his siblings felt obligated to their parents, Night did not, and viewed them leaving as good riddance.
Eventually, Rain left the pack altogether, and when Night was of age, he took off after him, seeking the one family member who seemed to like having him around. He made his way as a lone wolf, learning important survival skills through trial and error, and he has the scars to prove it. Due to Rain’s family often moving, it took Night quite some time to find them. By the time he did, Rain’s mate had become very ill, and Rain was in desperate need of help to care for his family.
Night pitched in, and helped Rain teach the pups how to hunt, along with providing them with food he gathered on his own. As time went on, he found Rain to be a brilliant, and well meaning, herbalist- however, the struggles and strife associated with his constant pursuit of new knowledge had taken its toll on himself, and his family. The happy-go-lucky, very excitable brother had turned into an exhausted, worried father, who was desperately struggling to hold his family together as his mate slowly died from the one illness he couldn’t cure.
When she did pass, it seemed to break something in Rain- he became lethargic and dull, and refused to come out of the den. His pups, also grieving and lost, eventually left on their own, frustrated that their father’s spirit seemed to die, just as their mother did. Only one pup, young Blizzard, stayed behind, his innate care for his father holding him close. Night, also, stayed, as he had nowhere left to go.
Suddenly, Rain seemed to get new vigor, and just as quickly, took off, as if he was on the trail of the rarest herb. He only stayed long enough to mention that he needed to “find himself,” before heading off with a speed that left Night and Blizzard spinning. When they did get their bearings, the pair took off after him again, hoping to find him before he hurt himself in his frenzy.
Along the way, the two wolves split up, hoping to cover more ground separately. Thankfully, Rain had found Mistkeeper’s pack soon after starting his new adventure, so it didn’t take very long for Night to cross paths with the ragtag group. He stayed, at first unsure of if he truly wanted to live in a pack, but after Blizzard turned up,(and finding himself growing closer to Mist), he decided to finally settle down, and make a life for himself with other wolves.
After several moons with the pack, Night came to a surprising (and uncomfortable) revelation- he had fallen for the pack’s leader. Besides the differences in rank and age, there was also the fact that her first mate, and the father of her pups, had died somewhat recently. Pinecaller’s death had been a shock to everyone, and the last thing Night wanted to do was cause Mist more stress. So, he kept quiet, trying to be content with being her friend and confidant, even as his own emotions towards her grew stronger.
Of course, if he hadn’t been so preoccupied with covering up his own emotions, he may have noticed that Mist had feelings for him as well. Eventually, the truth came out for both wolves, and Mistkeeper chose Nightchaser as her mate, deciding to be happy for once. Night, for his part, was looking forward to the future for once, and what that might bring for their pack.
