When she was older, Day and Sunshine explored the outreaches of the pack's tundra home, and once stumbled upon a serene forest. It was calm and sunny, with a clear stream running through it. It smelled of honey and sweet things. The young heir had an overwhelming sense of peace. A voice on the wind spoke, then.

Ah. Yes. Right on time, child. Come closer. He touched the grown before him with a shining nose, and Day moved closer. You have three trials. One. You must arrive where the sun shines the brightest before the light disappears. He pointed his muzzle west, behind her, and she smelled honey and something sour, like oranges and lemons. That will start when I release you, young one. Two. Hot coals. If I shall give you my blessing, you need to know how to survive. Did Solus seem. . . amused?
"Solus..." Day Break's voice broke. It felt strange talking to a god as if he were just another of her pack. "Why me?"
Complete my tasks, and I shall tell you, child. He lifted his muzzle toward the trees. The last task I have for you is this: find the snake and slay it. You will know which one I speak of when you find it. Do not fear, young one. You were born for this. Solus smiled lightly, then touched her softly with his nose.

The ground slipped from underneath her paws. Falling. She was falling. The wind tugged at her fur. Below, a lake. Would she die if she hit the water at this speed? The lake was rushing up to meet her. She squeezed her eyes shut, letting out a yelp of shock at the chill of the water before she met the water with a splash. The chill cut into her fur like an icy dagger. Bubbles rose up to the surface.
She couldn't breathe. Day Break kicked her legs desperately, her face screwed up. Her head popped up above the still surface of the lake, sucking in breaths of the chilly air. Glorious air. Sunshine flapped around her head, squawking. Move. Reaching the edge of the lake, she shivered. Even with the absence of a breeze, it was cold.
Seeing the sun just rising, she turned west. And she started sprinting.
Before long, her legs burned, and each chilly breath in felt like fire in her lungs. Sunshine flew beside her. The trees soon came up beside her. Home. Breathing in the scent of pine and fallen snow. She veered away from where she knew camp was. Her heart ached to see her mother and Queen, Blood Moon, but she had to complete her task.
Day Break saw a snippet of Winter Shiver dragging back an elk from the hunt before the only home she'd ever known melted away. The pain started in her shoulders, and Quartz Glitter's remedies seemed like a gods-set gift.
