Biography
Ambryn scowls down at his paws, enveloped by fresh grass with every step. Beside him, Aurin is staring at him, head tilted at an awkward angle. Ambryn snorts; he thinks he's subtle.
"What do you want?" grumbles Ambryn, unwilling to let Aurin analyse him any longer. Their respective scouting journeys are over, and they've happened upon one another's paths on the way back to the sanctum. Ambryn had been quite looking forward to a relaxed stroll by himself, but now he's being subjected to Aurin breathing down his neck.
"You've been rather solitary since you got here," says Aurin without preamble. "And now, with Sable sending you out to scout the glaciers all the time, I'm a little worried that you're going to go adrift."
"Don't go fussing over me, you know how that goes down," Ambryn warns, pace faltering as he lifts his head to fix Aurin with a particularly scathing look. "If I'm being completely honest, I've been waiting for a chance to get my teeth in your skin since I met you. How much of that bedazzling smile is real, hm? How many ladies have you performed for, just to string their hearts along?"
"I don't perform," Aurin doesn't sound all too bothered with the conversation, which irks Ambryn further. He stops abruptly, and Aurin does too once he notices.
Ambryn growls low in his throat, "I've met your type, you're nothing but trouble."
"Perhaps when I was young, but weren't we all?"
Ambryn only lets that hang in the air for a few seconds before he scoffs and continues walking. "I'm not wasting my time on you, but you're toeing a line, mate, and I'm all too happy to knock you down a peg if you try me again."
Aurin, wisely, stays a few steps behind for the rest of the walk, while Ambryn tries to shake off the gnawing urge to charge at him, pin him to the ground, make him submit so that his pride isn't so overbearing all the time. He only just manages to ignore that urge, but when he sees the cheerful looks Aurin receives upon return, he has to turn away. He's sure the smooth-talking and the charisma is a facade, he's certain of it.
For now, Ambryn has to find comfort in the fact that he is being the truest version of himself. There's no sugar-coating with him, situations are black-and-white, action-consequence, problem-solution. That's how life should be.
