Biography
Wynter and her littermates, Fang and Blue, were born to Ice and Frozen in River Pack. They grew up under the strict eye of their father, and he groomed his children from birth to be mean, tough, and fear nothing but him. Even though Frozen wanted to be River Pack Alpha himself, he knew he was getting too old to succeed the current Alpha--and so as soon as his pups were born, Frozen knew he could mold Wynter into the pack's next Alpha and control his Packmates through her. He trained Wynter in private and secret from the rest of the pack, pushing her harder and harder until she became cold, detached, and ruthless, as well as cunning and very persuasive.
He trained Fang as well, making Wynter's brother brutish and violent, preparing him to serve Wynter in any way he could. Blue, on the other hand, never developed her siblings' ferocity -- in fact, at first, she tried to protect Wynter and Fang from Frozen. Her efforts were shut down quickly, however, and Wynter joined her father and brother in bullying and threatening Blue until she was reduced to a compliant, diffident shell. Wynter held no appreciation for her sister's concern, and saw her the same way Frozen did: a weak, pathetic waste of time.
As a warrior, Wynter gained followers through fear and manipulation, just as her father wanted, and by the time she'd become an envoy, most of River Pack was eager to see her take over. When it came time for the Alpha to choose his Beta, the choice ultimately came down to between Wynter and another popular envoy: a she-wolf named Bright. Bright had once been a good friend of Wynter's, but the tension of their common goal in becoming Beta had created a rift between them. Wynter was angry and on edge; Bright seemed to have most of the pack's favor, and she couldn't take it. She was so close to achieving her father's goal. She couldn't let him down now! In desperation and at Frozen's egging, Wynter finally gave into her savage and coolly conditioned instincts, and upon catching Bright alone one day, she murdered her in secret--thus securing the role of Beta for herself.
Her plan went awry, however. Her apprentice, Wolf, had seen the murder of her father and reported her to the Alpha. Wynter was immediately exiled for murder of a Packmate. Wynter fled as far from her pack as she could, angry at all of them.
When she found Pepper's forest, she took notice of the scent markers for the territory, and completely disregarded them. She didn't care about some small pack. Let them try to take her down.
But Pepper caught her alone in the woods one evening. At first glance, Wynter wasn't much intimidated; a small wolf with thick, shaggy white-and-black fur and unusual green eyes. There was an intelligent glint in them, though, and as Pepper drew closer, Wynter took notice of the coarse muscle beneath her fur, the long, strong legs and powerful shoulders, and the deadly fangs curving down around her jaw.
Pepper greeted her friendly enough--trying to touch noses. Wynter snapped at her and Pepper leapt back, a small nick on her nose beginning to bleed. She looked surprised and Wynter thought maybe this would be easier than she thought. But then Pepper's expression firmed and she straightened, raising her tail dominantly. She stared up at Wynter, who cowered under her stony gaze.
This was no warrior--this was a mother with pups at her camp, an Alpha with Packmates she swore to protect. This was a wolf to be reckoned with.
Pepper snarled as Wynter cowered, baring her fangs, and Wynter pressed her belly flat to the earth. She rolled over to show her stomach and throat, offering submission. Pepper's tense features relaxed, and she extended an invitation to join her pack, saying she could use a strong, courageous wolf like Wynter.
Wynter accepted. She didn't even have any plans to overthrow this wolf and her Beta. Pepper seemed a good wolf and a strong Alpha.
And when Wynter reached their camp, she was glad she hadn't thought of scheming. This pack was larger than she'd taken it for.
Two small pups--one red and one mottled gray-white--played with a cream she-wolf and a smaller, younger ginger-and-black one. A pupsitter and her apprentice. At the other end of the camp, a young black male apprentice was sharing a muskrat carcass with an older black-and-white she-wolf apprentice. A golden male lay sprawled outside his den alongside a blue-and-white male wolf. A ginger male was talking with a dark brown male and a blue-gray one.
Pepper introduced her Packmates. Her Beta, mate, and father of her pups, and leader of their hunting party, Fire, with his huntmates Cedar and Howl. Their scouts, Golden and Snow, and their apprentices Shade and Night. Their pupsitter, Breeze, and her apprentice, Stalker, Shade's litter-sister. And Pepper's own pups, Red and Silver.
Wynter offered up her skills as a hunter and Pepper assigned her to Fire's party for the time being, sending them out on a practice hunt to see how well they worked together. Fire was stalker, as he had the most experience in that role. Howl, with the best catching experience, agreed to finish off the prey. That left Wynter and Cedar to chase the prey in to herd it toward Howl. Fire agreed to stalk the prey and force it to bolt, where Wynter and Cedar would intercept it, driving it toward Howl for the finish.
They set their plan in motion. Wynter lunged at the muskrat, forcing it to veer aside. Cedar erupted from the brambles across from her, making it turn again. The two of them flanked the creature as they chased it, Fire running center behind them to make sure it didn't double back.
As Howl exploded from the bushes ahead, pouncing on the prey and snapping its neck, Wynter thought to herself that she was gonna like this new pack.
