Biography
Leia was born as a Leashed Wolf, a wolf owned by longpaws. She never met her parents. But Leia and her litter-sisters, Sierra and Zahra, dreamed of escape.
One day, everything changed. Leia had picked up some longpaw speech from her time around them, so when they announced that Sierra and Zahra would be going to new homes, she understood.
Her sisters would be taken away.
She couldn't let that happen.
So when her longpaw opened the door of her cage to feed her, Leia took her chance. She leapt at the longpaw, snarling, teeth bared. She slammed hard into his chest, knocking him off his paws and to the floor. Leia whipped around and grabbed the latch of Sierra's cage in her teeth, tugging fiercely until it clicked open. Then she spun to face Zahra's cage, unlatching it. The three of them took off while the longpaw was still dazed.
Leia led her litter-sisters through the cold, bright hallways. Leia skidded to a halt when she spotted a room with an opened window.
"In here!"
She swerved around and bolted into the room, leaping up on the desk and to the ledge of the window above. She shoved her muzzle through the narrow gap and lifted it higher, forcing her shoulders through and arching her spine to push the window up as far as it would go. Sierra jumped up beside her and down onto the spoil-box outside. Zahra followed close behind and Leia leapt through last. Her paws thumped against the roof of the box and she jumped to the ground.
They bolted again, racing through the longpaw-made streets until they were panting and tired and out of breath. But still they ran, muscles burning and breath coming in short gasps, until the longpaw-made streets were replaced with soft grass and the tall, unnatural stone buildings turned to trees and undergrowth.
Leia finally skidded to a halt, trembling, and not just with exhaustion. It had always been warm in the center, but out here it was cold. Snow covered the ground and the bushes, turning everything white. The trees were leafless, bare branches reaching out for the sky.
"Where are we?" Sierra gasped.
"I'm...not sure," Zahra whimpered, tail tucking as she looked around. "Somewhere in the forest."
"Hello?" a voice called. They all froze, stiffening as their heads snapped toward the voice. "Hello? Who's there?"
"I don't think anyone's out here, Howl," a female voice argued. "Let's focus on tracking down that prey."
"No, I'm sure I heard someone talking, Wynter," the first voice said, a hint of frustration evident. "No wolf from our pack. The voices sounded young."
"More pups?" a third voice scoffed. "Akita just showed up yesterday and now there may be more pups out here seeking out our pack?"
"There's no telling if they're looking for our pack," the female voice, Wynter, corrected. "Maybe they're lone wolves who want to stay that way."
"They sound too young for that," Howl argued. "Fire, please, I'm telling you, some wolf's out here. Several wolves. We can't just turn our backs on them. Pepper would be so disappointed if we left pups out here in the cold."
"You're right," a fourth voice conceded. "We'll go back to the scent trail later. Lead the way, Howl."
Leia heard pawsteps crunching toward them over the snow. She and her litter-sisters cowered back, crouching low. There was nowhere to hide in the barren snow-scape, and they couldn't possibly run anymore.
A blue-and-gray male with blue eyes appeared through the trees. He froze, eyes widening in alarm when he spotted the pups.
"I was right!" he called back. "Pups! Three of them!"
"What?!" A dark gold male with yellow underfur and red across his back, shoulders, and head appeared beside the gray-and-blue male. His ice-blue eyes sparked with alarm.
A dark brown male with blue eyes and a pale blue-white she-wolf with orange eyes padded up beside the other two.
The she-wolf's eyes softened. "Oh, poor things. They're shivering. They must be freezing. We should get them to Wolf."
"Wolf went out foraging. She won't be back for a while," the brown male argued.
"We can at least take them back to camp and warm them up ourselves until Wolf returns," the fiery male stated. "Thorn doesn't have any pups to watch over, she could take them."
The gray-and-blue male nodded. "Yes." He padded forward and laid down in front of Leia and her sisters, so he was eye-level with them. "Greetings, young ones. My name is Howl. I'm a member of Pack Trueno. These are my huntmates, Wynter and Cedar, and our Beta, Fire. We'd like to take you back to our camp. You'll be warm and safe there, I promise. Would you like to come with us?"
Leia traded a look with her sisters. Warmth and safety sounded good, and these wolves all looked so kind... Sierra and Zahra gave her slight nods and Leia nodded shyly at Howl.
Howl stood and leaned forward to grasp Leia's scruff gently in his jaws. Leia wanted to protest that she was far too old for this, but she was so tired and being carried sounded so nice right now. Wynter picked up Sierra while Cedar took Zahra.
"Hunting will have to wait for today," Fire asserted as he turned to lead the way. "I know Pepper will understand."
Leia let herself go limp in Howl's strong, gentle grip, and everything slid into blackness.
When Leia woke, she was on solid ground, curled in a nest of moss and feathers alongside Sierra and Zahra. It was so warm and so comfortable. The walls of a bramble den surrounded them and several other small nests were scattered around the place. Outside the den, Leia could hear voices.
"Wake up," she whispered, prodding her sisters. "Something's happening!"
Sierra and Zahra sleepily lifted their heads and blinked at her blearily. Leia crept toward the entrance of the den and poked her muzzle out. Sierra and Zahra pressed in on either side of her.
Outside, the camp was awake and alive, teeming with wolves. Wynter, Howl, Fire, and Cedar were gathered together, facing a white-and-black she-wolf with green eyes. A blue-and-white male wolf was settled beside a golden male outside a den opposite Leia and her sisters. Near the camp entrance, a young black male was seated beside a black-and-white she-wolf and a ginger-and-black she-wolf. A pale gray she-wolf was seated outside an arching stone overhang that curved back into a den, while a blue-white she-wolf like Wynter was settled beside a cream she-wolf. A mottled gray pup was curled up with a red-and-orange pup like Fire, with a slightly older gray she-wolf beside them.
"Pepper, we're sorry for failing the hunt," Fire said humbly, bowing his head to the white-and-black she-wolf. She must be the Alpha. "But when Howl heard those three little pups in the forest and we found, we couldn't just turn away. We had to help them."
Pepper dipped her head. "Of course. I understand." Her gaze drifted past her Beta to the den where Leia and her sisters crouched. Leia froze as the Alpha's green gaze settled on them. The she-wolf smiled gently, tail tapping the earth. "Welcome, little ones. Have a nice sleep?"
Leia crept cautiously from the den, watching the Alpha warily. "Yes." She paused. "Howl said we could be a part of your pack."
The she-wolf's eyes sparked with amusement as she glanced at Howl. "Did he now?"
Howl dropped his gaze. "Sorry, Pepper. I figured it was what you'd say."
"You guessed right." She returned her gaze to the pups. "If you would like, little ones, you can of course join our pack. We would be honored to have you."
Leia lifted her head, surprised. "Really?"
Pepper nodded. "Truly. You will need mentors, of course, and Thorn will be your pupsitter until you can care for yourselves, but I sense you will be excellent additions to our pack."
Leia spun an excited circle, looking at Sierra and Zahra with eagerness. It was what they'd always dreamed! Being wild wolves! Part of a real pack!
Pepper chuckled. "What roles would you like, little ones? Golden and Snow already have apprentices, but Shade will be receiving her full rank shortly, which will leave Snow open to a new apprentice. Wynter is mentoring Akita, but that still leaves Fire, Howl, and Cedar. Wolf is far too young and new to her role to take an apprentice quite yet. And Breeze has an apprentice in Stalker, but like Shade, she will soon be a full warrior, leaving both Breeze and Thorn open to new apprentices."
"Hunter!" Leia yelped eagerly. "I want to learn to be a hunter!"
"Me too!" Sierra agreed.
"Me three!" Zahra spun an excited circle, tail wagging as a blur.
Pepper chuckled. "The three of you seem to get along well enough. Akita will be the final chaser in Fire's hunting party, but once the three of you are made full hunters, you could form a party of your own. What are your names?"
"I'm Leia, and these are my litter-sisters, Sierra and Zahra," Leia provided.
Pepper cocked her head, studying them. "Leia, you seem a natural born leader. I think party leader would be good for you. And I sense intelligence and wisdom with you. Stalker, I think. Fire will mentor you. Sierra, you seem quick and agile. I'll put you with Cedar to be a chaser. And Zahra, you'll be a finisher under Howl. You seem strong enough."
The three of them traded eager looks.
