Biography
Snow and his litter-brother Patch were born to Blue and Crow in Marsh Pack. Their parents stopped being mates very soon after their birth, and they were so torn up over their own emotional issues that they were quite distant from Patch and Snow. They only checked up on the brothers every now and then, and so the pair was instead raised mainly by the keepers in the nursery without any real parental figures to look to. Because of this, they formed a very strong bond, about as close as could be.
As they grew older, however, they became disruptive in the nursery due to their above-average sizes, so they were made into apprentices a moon early. It was really just an excuse to move them out of the nursery, though; they were not officially apprentices, as they had no mentors and were still not allowed to leave their camp. Really, they were just limited to base training before they should have been. At first, Snow had been eager and excited to be an apprentice, but it wasn't long before he realized that base training was a far reach from what he thought it would be. About a moon went by, and the brothers became restless during tedious apprentice tasks around their camp without purpose. Snow was feeling particularly bitter now, angry that they were getting no more attention as apprentices than they had as pups. And so he formulated a plan with Patch: they were going to sneak outside, hunt down tons of prey, and impress every warrior in the pack upon returning with all of their catches.
It seemed like a great idea, and so they set off on the expedition, sneaking out of camp and tramping through their territory. Unfortunately, though...their little adventure went terribly wrong. Once they reached the lake, Patch had the idea of trying to catch a fish--because wouldn't the warriors be pleased if they came back with rare prey? Snow was interested and agreed with that logic. He didn't want to get his own paws wet, but he encouraged Patch to make an effort. Patch courageously did so, but he was quickly pulled out into deep water. He panicked, not knowing how to swim properly, and ended up getting his paws tangled in some weeds. He became trapped under the water, and Snow couldn't free him in time. Patch drowned. Snow failed to save him. It was traumatic for the young male, and he was left with severe survivor's guilt. Blue and Crow went from paying minimal attention to Snow to outright giving him the cold shoulder, blaming him for his litter-brother's death; and now the rest of Marsh Pack seemed to resent him just as much as he resented them.
For another moon, Snow was forced to carry out his apprentice duties without being a real apprentice, trapped in the camp that hated him with cats he couldn't feel safe with. He was depressed and angry, and he took out his feelings by being unruly and causing as much trouble for as many wolves as he could. If it was already what they expected of him, it didn't really matter, right? If they all thought as he did--that he should have drowned in Patch's place--then there was no good reason why he shouldn't just upset them eve further, right? He made himself a problem and a despised delinquent within the pack, spiting many wolves into hating or at least avoiding him. He told himself that it was fine, and that he preferred it that way. It wasn't like he was bothered by being alone anyways, after all. Plus, he probably deserved it.
Finally, once he had reached six moons old, their Alpha, Hawk, gave him an official ceremony and switched him to field training with Tiger as his mentor. Tiger was a young and rash warrior with temper problems. Hawk's hope was for the two to find a balance and help each other get better...but no. It backfired terribly. Tiger and Snow were horrible to each other. They each dished out all their hatred and fury on one another, and learned nothing whatsoever, getting no work done. Snow felt patronized and insulted, again believing that Marsh Pack had failed him, simply pinning him on the most convenient option available: in this case, a scarcely-experienced wolf with raging anger issues. How flattering. Their relationship was toxic at best, and on bad days, it was borderline abusive. It eventually got to the point where Tiger and Snow did not even bother to try training anymore, instead going to extreme lengths in order to avoid each other, accomplishing nothing at all.
The only solace that Snow found during his time was in the form of a Field Pack wolf named Cedar. He met him for the first time at a meeting between the packs--an intriguing young wolf. Snow was cross and hostile to him at first, as he was with everyone, but to his surprise, Cedar didn't back off right away. He seemed determined to get to know him. Snow was perplexed and unused to such attention. It was particularly unusual for an apprentice from another pack to approach him, for his own Packmates had been spreading rumors over the past couple moons that Snow had murdered his brother, causing the other wolves to be wary and frightened around him. He'd become almost desensitized to it by then.
But Cedar? He didn't seem to believe or care about the rumors. He was smart and funny and seemed nice enough. But best and strangest of all, he understood his emotions. He related to his feelings of alienation and loss. Snow was amazed by his empathy and positive outlook in the face of his own personal tragedies, and he felt rather drawn to Cedar--just as he was to Snow. Snow and Cedar would seek each other out at every meeting since then on simply in order to vent out their baggage and sentiments. They bonded as friends, connection becoming stronger as they got closer and closer. Snow was overwhelmed by how strongly he felt about Cedar; it was the most he'd ever cared about anyone since Patch had died. On some level, it scared him--but on another, it was exhilarating. It was refreshing to him to know that he could still love in such a pure way.
Finally, he passed his assessment and earned his warrior rank. He still hated everything about his life in Marsh Pack, but at least he had a friend in Cedar--and seeing him gave him something to look forward to each moon. Oddly soon, though, before he'd been a warrior for long, he was approached by Blue. It startled him, as he'd barely spoken with his mother after his brother had died, but she seemed to be trying to settle something. She talked to him. Spoke about Patch. Trying to make amends. And Snow listened, and heard, but he just couldn't wrap his head around him. Blue had blamed him for Patch's death. Inadvertently, her neglect had been the thing that caused it. And now she thought she could just walk up to him and forgive him, as if he was the one who owed her an apology? As if that would do either of them a favor? Unable to hold it in, he lost his temper at his mother. She flared right back up at him, and it dissolved into a bitter and nasty argument. They parted ways on even worse terms than they had been on before they'd spoken.
Moons passed, and Snow's relationship with his pack did not improve. If anything, it got worse. Eventually, having had enough, he abandoned his pack in exchange for Cedar's.
Just as he was about to cross the border to Cedar's territory, he saw the brown male wolf approaching with a blue-eyed, blue-and-gray male wolf. Cedar introduced him as Howl, a good friend from Oak Pack. Howl had been exiled from his pack for a forbidden love, coming to Field Pack for refuge. But Cedar had been going to Oak Pack to ask for protection, as his own pack had kicked him out, too. Both of them had turned toward Marsh Pack in the hopes of staying with Snow.
Snow explained how he'd exiled himself from his pack, deciding he'd rather be a lone wolf than stay with his Packmates. The three males, left with nowhere else to go, left the territories.
Weeks passed as they traveled, and they met up with two exiled apprentices: Stalker and Shade, litter-sisters who'd been kicked out due to a misunderstanding in the aftermath of a battle. The two apprentices began traveling with them. As they approached forestland, Snow remembered hearing from some wolves they'd passed about a friendly, kind-hearted Alpha she-wolf who'd set up in the forest near the fields and mountains, with allies in three other packs and a steadily growing one of her own. She took in anyone willing to offer her pack their loyalty.
Snow suggested they go there, and everyone was in immediate agreement. They headed for Pepper's forest and she accepted them easily. She set Howl and Cedar as huntmates in the hunting party of her mate and Beta, Fire. Snow was set on scout duty with Golden. Stalker started learning under the pack's pupsitter, Breeze, while Shade became Snow's apprentice. Snow and Shade became quick friends with Golden and his apprentice, Night.
