Named for the brown spot on her back that resembles a shell, Tortoise was the first pupsitter for the Lingering Howl, and was the first pupsitter to become the Pupmother. The Pupmother is the most experienced of all the pupsitters, and leads them in deciding who watches which pup, as well as mentoring adolescents to become pupsitters.
Tortoise believes that beyond the wolves that helped found the Lingering Howl (Founders), that only wolves who are born into the pack should be allowed to become pupsitters. Why trust someone who has no ties with the pack beyond their own pups, if they have any?
Although this opinion is not shared by all in the pack....
Though she carries the title Pupmother, Tortoise is known as humble, and treats others kindly. Many have begun to murmur about her, though, as she has no pups of her own, nor seems to want for a mate. When asked, the amber wolf merely replies that she is fine being the mother for both the pups she raises and for the pupsitters she mentors.
Sometimes at night, a pup will find that Tortoise has chosen to curl around them. It's something she's always done, every night, with a pup of her choice. Even the drying tears have become normal, although, somehow, the pups have never seen her cry, and they understand that it is a soft secret among them.
