Rutile

I shook with fear and anticipation as my new adoptive parents approached. Lillemor-Mother Bear-had been kind to me during my stay with her, but it hadn't been the same as living in a real pack. I missed my birth parents, but they hadn't wanted me for some reason. I don't know why. What did I do wrong? How could I have done better? Would I disappoint these parents too? Lillemor nudged me, breaking me out of my thoughts, and I got my first glimpse of my new fathers. One was a pure black wolf with kind orange eyes who introduced himself as Cassiterite. He bent down and touched noses gently with me. The other was an obviously dominate male who looked like he had stepped straight out of the lunar fairy tales my pupsitter had told me. His pelt was a mottling of blue and white tones and his eyes glowed purple. He introduced himself as Labradorite, and said that he was Cassiterite's mate and the leader of the Pack of Boulders, which I was to join.

Cass guided me between them as we padded back to the pack's camp. The leafy forest was dryer than the riparian woodland where I had lived. At least it was still close to my familiar stomping grounds. The new surroundings still made me anxious, though. Cassiterite and Labradorite showed me the den where I would stay and the pupsitters who would take care of me. The pack was welcoming and my adoptive parents dote on me. I'm still worried about if it will end, though. What if they decide they don't want me? What will I do then?

Some time later

My paws thrummed against the ground as I ran towards our quarry. When I drew close enough to it, I pounced and completed my capture. Garnet, Gluacanite, and Pebble surrounded me with excited whines and wagging tails. I had done it! I had completed my first hunt as an adult. I had watched other finishers like Melanite and Essexite finish a hunt, but never done it myself. It felt amazing. It's like I'm really part of the pack now. I never thought my dads would keep me around this long, but they have!

I can't help but worry, though. There's been some tension in the pack lately. I'm worried it's all going to fall apart. Is it my fault? Did I do something wrong? And my dads just adopted a new pup. Was I not enough for them? I know I'm probably making a moose out of a fawn, but I just can't help it.

Several months later
I. . .I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. My huntmates are all laughing and feasting together and I'm. . .on the sidelines. I try to go up to them, wagging my tail and displaying my throat, but they just snap at me and drive me off to gnaw on bones in the corner. I could tell my parents, I guess, but Labradorite's busy and I don't want to worry Cass. I'm sure this will all work itself out, right?
