Demeter was a lost soul that was found by the hunting party and brought back to the den. What they didn't realize that the dirt covered pup was actually a dirt colored wolf. They knew the stories the two legs told about a goddess of the earth from Balto (though he'd grown up in the wild as well so but they thought he seemed too tamed to be fully wild raised) that went by the name Demeter. Balto told Loki of this and Loki knew it was the perfect name for her.
