Reflect

Lore

???: Influenced by popular culture, it becomes fashionable to own dogs that resemble wolves. A group of citizens in a mountain town decide to take advantage of this trend and their area's thriving wolf population: they claim a derelict farm and start a wolfdog breeding operation, selling the pups to undiscerning owners. To this end, they capture several young wolves, including a female pup named Gris. 

-1 month: Authorities learn of the unethical breeding practices and move to shut down the operation. The breeders cut their losses and flee, releasing all the animals. Gris, now an adult and pregnant with a wolfdog's pups, has forgotten how to live as a wolf. She makes her way to the nearest town and lives off vermin and scraps. 

0 months: Gris' 5 pups are born.

4 months: After scraping by for months, Gris and her 2 remaining pups are caught sleeping in an alley by humans. They raise the alarm; she grabs one pup and flees. She is pursued until she leaves the town and enters a nearby forest. The other pup, Reflect, hides and waits for his mother to return. 

5 months: Hunger and cold weather drives Reflect to approach humans. He is found and swiftly adopted by a family, who mistake him for a dog. 

10 months: Reflect has grown into a healthy and energetic adolescent who wholeheartedly trusts humans. This causes trouble when his owners enclose him in their yard for a playdate with a friend's dog. The other animal is frightened by Reflect's odd scent and becomes aggressive. The humans are busy conversing while Reflect tries to flee; the dog catches him, and he instinctively fights back, clamping his jaws around its throat. The humans enter the yard, screaming. Reflect bolts. He finds himself on the edge of town and, chased by shouts of alarm from those who see his bloodied muzzle, enters the forest to hide. 

11 months: A half-starved Reflect happens upon a familiar scent. He follows it, and reaches a wolf den in a clearing. Moments later, a she-wolf emerges. He immediately recognises his mother and bounds forwards, but Gris bristles and snaps; he notices that she's heavily pregnant. Two male wolves (a pair of brothers and Gris' new mates, unbeknownst to Reflect) emerge from the trees, snarling. Reflect flees, distraught. 

1 year: A desperate attempt to steal food from a sled while its musher was out of sight results in Reflect being cowed by a team of angry sled dogs. Your Final Loss, passing by, hears the commotion. Their dislike of dogs prompts them to distract the team while Reflect steals the food. Upon watching him eat and seeing how skinny and unkempt he is, the leader - feigning reluctance - escorts Reflect back to the Pack and bestows that name upon him.
