Dark Oak was brought into Peterah's pack at a young age, shortly after Jet's sister Rilmyna died. The two were the only pups in the whole pack for quite a while, so they were given the undivided attention of their pupsitter, Kala.
Though raised alongside Jet, she felt more attached to Kala and the two scouts Lucas and Embre than she did to Peterah and Athryn. In fact, she spent far too much time with the three of them than she did with Jet! Oddly enough, he didn't seem to mind, and soon he found many other playmates among the newer puppies.
-- Adulthood and Unexpected Changes --
One night, Kala brought the adolescent Dark Oak to a private cavern, away from the prying eyes and ears of the other pack members. Kala had recently suffered a loss of her own puppies, and Dark Oak knew she's been feeling depressed. In that cavern, they met up with Lucas and Embre, who told Dark Oak the news: the three of them were going to leave to form their own pack, and they offered her to come along with them.
Despite her fondness of the three, Dark Oak wasn't sure if she wanted to leave. She knew that the three of them weren't leaving out of spite or mistreatment from Peterah, but they desired their own territory and freedom. Still, she was awfully fond of Peterah and his pack, and didn't want to leave yet another pack behind.
When the time came, when Kala, Lucas, and Embre announced their departure from the pack, they asked her one last time if she'll come along. She refused politely. She felt that there was more waiting for her in Peterah's pack. Hearing that, Embre offered to stay in the pack for a bit longer, to teach her how to properly scout.
Kala and Lucas still left the pack, but Embre told Peterah and Dark Oak that his place is temporary. They both understood.
For Dark Oak's first scouting mission, she and Embre went to visit the two of them in their new territory in Deciduous Forest.
