The eagle owl is a very large owl with long tufts of feathers - "ears" and large bright orange eyes. The body length is 60–75 cm, the wingspan is 160–188 cm, and the body weight is 1.2–4.2 kg.
The range of the eagle owl covers most of Europe and Northern Asia: in the north - to the border of the forest, in the east - to Sakhalin and Japan, in the south - to North Africa, Arabia and Southern China. It inhabits forests, steppes and even deserts, climbs mountains up to 5000 m above sea level and feels good on the plains.
The bird is sedentary and does not leave the habitat throughout its life. The exception is the periods when the bird has to roam due to lack of food (in particularly severe winters or when the fodder harvest is poor).
The eagle owl feeds on fish, amphibians, bats, birds (capercaillies, hazel grouses, ducks, gulls), rodents (voles, ground squirrels, ferrets), mammals (squirrels, hares, martens).
The eagle owl is listed in the Red Book of Russia and is protected in a number of state sanctuaries and reserves.
Обыкновенный филин — очень крупная сова с длинными пучками перьев — «ушками» и большими ярко-оранжевыми глазами. Длина тела составляет 60–75 см, размах крыльев — 160–188 см, масса тела — 1,2–4,2 кг.
Ареал филина охватывает большую часть Европы и Северной Азии: на севере — до границы леса, на востоке — до Сахалина и Японии, на юге — до Северной Африки, Аравии и Южного Китая. Он населяет леса, степи и даже пустыни, поднимается в горы до 5000 м над уровнем моря и хорошо себя чувствует на равнинах.
Птица отличается оседлостью и не покидает района обитания в течение всей жизни. Исключение составляют периоды, когда птице приходится кочевать из-за нехватки пищи (в особо суровые зимы или при неурожае кормов).
Питается филин рыбой, амфибиями, летучими мышами, птицами (глухарями, рябчиками, утками, чайками), грызунами (мышами-полевками, сусликами, хорьками), млекопитающими (белками, зайцами, куницами).
Филин занесён в Красную книгу России и охраняется в ряде государственных заказников и заповедников.
