"When dreams become reality, the lunar king will rise."

The light of the full moon was especially bright that night, shining across the earth below and bathing it in a silvery glow. The light, though elegant, was lost upon the tired, hazy eyes that stared unblinkingly at the ground ahead of him.

Blood and Smoke was dying.

Even a Cryptid, born from the flames and ashes of Hell itself, was bound to the toils of the flesh in which it made its home. Blood and Smoke, his true name lost long ago, had reigned over the mortals of Naonuma for over five consecutive years of life. Having taken up the mantle later due to the former King's youth at the time of his arrival, he had been sent to wait- a strange, cold purgatory it had been. But it was one that he, a being of flame and light and heat, found strangely pleasant.

Blood and Smoke was dying.

Just an hour prior to his departure, he had seen the love of his life, his dear Queen Obsidian Edge, be filled by the same fate that was now calling to him. The dying King had been plagued by a strange chant, uttered in a voice he did not know and in a language that he could not recall. Yet when he heard it, he immediately understood what it was telling him to do.

Blood and Smoke was dying.

Leaving behind his beloved home in the heart of the dense coniferous forest, the dying Cryptid wandered north, to a land of cold and light so familiar, yet so foreign. It felt akin to the limbo where he had sat, waiting for his time to rise. The light of the moon had turned from silver to cerulean, yet the male's vision was fading fast. His death pilgrimage was nearing its end. The voice, now many voices at once, had grown louder, almost deafening. He stopped at the top of a cold, lonely hill, turning his dying gaze towards the eternal light of the moon. From his maw, fell the very same words that were now being screamed within his fading mind.

"When dreams become reality, the lunar king will rise."

For several long moments, nothing happened. Smoke remained alone, staring at the moonlit sky. His warm breath fell from his maw in small puffs of mist, the dwindling heat within his body doing little to stave off the chill. Where once he would stand unphased, now he shivered from the cold. And suddenly, when he feared the cold might claim him, a shadow moved.

No, not a shadow. A wolf.

Eyes of a deep, piercing, almost glowing blue gleamed from the darkness. No fur was seen amongst the shadows, for it was as if the wolf himself were a piece of the night around him. He shied away from the moonlight, keeping himself mostly hidden from view. That is, at least, until the clouds above him parted, shifted just enough for Smoke to get a glimpse of this stranger's pelt. It was as though an empty void exploded into being before his very eyes: this wolf had no lightness to his fur color. Nose and paw pads were the same. All of him, was dark. Except for the shockingly bright blue of his lenses. A melanistic wolf.

"You are… the lunar king…" Smoke breathed.

"Indeed. And you, the Cryptid King. The spirits told me to find you." The stranger's voice was like silk over marble- smooth and even, and alluring. Smoke's fading vision homed in on this… shadowy wolf, as best as possible considering.

"I am going to die here, aren't I?" Smoke asked.

The stranger's voice was gentle. "Good king… you are already dead."


Maxius, the Lunar King

Who exactly is Maxius?

Maxius was born on the first quarter moon in the summer, deep in the heart of the Taiga. He and his brother, Maxian, were unlike their siblings, unlike their mother and father. Born with fur as dark as pitch, the two brothers stuck out quite a bit in comparison to the other pups.

When Maxius and Maxian weaned, they were told that their fates rested in different parts of the world. Maxian would stay in the pack of his birth, while Maxius was destined to travel south, away from the cold taiga and towards the dense trees of the coniferous forest. This news saddened the brothers, but they both swore that they'd never be apart in spirit.

Maxius, as he began to age, learned of the Lunar World through whispers spoken to him by his mother. A place of eternal night, where mists swirled and strange creatures lurked. It was said that only the ruler of a pack could travel there in their dreams.

But Maxius would prove them wrong.

The little pup, while everyone was sleeping, crept away through the night. It was scary, being alone in the darkness that covered the slumbering land, but Maxius' paws led him to a distant cave, where he could feel am almost... ethereal tug upon his mind and soul. Heedless of the potential dangers, he wandered inside.

And within that cave, Maxius found a portal to the world of dreams.

It was a pool of water, as blue as the sky. Looking up, Maxius could see the light of the full moon pouring down into the still waters. The whole cave was lit up in a silvery-blue light, as though the moon herself were blessing those grounds.

Maxius, overcome with curiosity, padded forward. Leaning in, he drank from the pool. The water was unlike anything he'd ever tasted- clear, fresh, and unbelievably cold. After taking a few swallows, he felt his eyelids beginning to droop. A deep, strong sleep was swift to overtake him.

And when his eyes opened again, the world around him had changed.

He was no longer in the cave, but instead he found himself beneath the roots of a tree. Climbing out, his breath was sucked from his lungs at the sight of the world beyond.

The Lunar World. He had crossed from the Waking World and into the realm of dreams that his mother spoke of.

Days, even weeks were spent in this land of night and moon and shadow. Far and wide the pup roamed, drinking in the power of the Lunar World. It changed him. Slowly at first - his eyes went from a deep red to a bright blue, as blue as the world around him. It wasn't visible, but his coat changed as well. Beneath the black, a mixture of colors all draped over a dark, eternal blue. The Lunar World had changed him. It had recognized him as he was meant to be. A king in his own right, in a time far off when it would be needed.

The Lunar King had risen.
