The leader of the Cauchemar Pack is known simply as Loup-Cauchemar ("Night Wolf"). It is said that the Loup-Cauchemar is more than just a wolf — it is an ancient being that is the physical manifestation of the guardian spirit. The Loup-Cauchemar is never seen in its true form, for it is said to shift between the shape of a massive, shadowy wolf and something far older — a creature of mist, bone, and whispering wind. Its eyes glow with an unnatural light, and its howl echoes through the bayou like a call from another world.

The Loup-Cauchemar chooses its successor through an ancient rite. The pack's wolves must prove themselves worthy in a trial of survival, tracking, and cunning. The strongest and most cunning of the pack takes the mantle, though some whisper that the Loup-Cauchemar's spirit chooses them through dreams and visions, an ethereal pact made under the cover of the fog.
