Finchfeather was a humble little boy who would never talk up his accomplishments to anyone. And he had some that he could talk up if he wanted to. He was the first pup to win a game of Lava and proceeded to win every game after that. The other pups began to compete for second place, since Finch's victory was secure. Even Finch's siblings couldn't match his agility, but he never made fun of them or the other pups. Finch didn't like being the center of attention and he would even praise another pup just to get the spotlight off of himself. But despite Finch's efforts, his uncle Redflash took notice of his talents and chose him as his personal apprentice.
At the Academy, Finch studied speed and agility to prepare for life as a chaser, and he was a natural. His teachers marveled at his ability to outrun and outmaneuver everyone, sometimes even the teachers themselves. But Finch didn't always do his best, sometimes letting other pups take the lead when he could have easily come out ahead. When Horseheart asked him why, he explained that he just didn't like the attention that came from being the best. Horse told him that it wasn't so bad to be acknowledged for doing well. It won't always happen, so better to take it when it comes. Finch listened to this advice, but wondered whether that was really true.
During his apprenticeship, Finch couldn't hide his talent for chasing work, and it surprised even himself how that seemed to bother him less and less. He was maturing and starting to notice that Horse was right, being noticed wasn't so bad, especially when girls were the ones noticing. But he was still humble and simply allowed his flair to speak for itself rather than bragging. And he always made sure he recognized others for their skills too. Red was proud of him and told him that he was the best apprentice he could have hoped for, but he said it in private so not to embarrass Finch.
On his first birthday, Finch stayed in the background, true to his nature. He didn't make the most noise or drink the most, but anyone who looked at him saw that he was beaming with pride. He had already gained some respect for his skill as a chaser and his future was very bright before him.
Now as an adult, Finch is still humble and unassuming. But he doesn't mind a little recognition now and then. And he gets as much as he can stand from his teammates on the hunting team. It's often said that Finch is one of the best chasers the pack has ever had. His teammates say that he lives up to his name because "Finch can really fly". No prey can escape him once he's sighted them and just following him is sometimes enough to secure a killing opportunity. At home, Finch is quiet and calm and makes everyone around him feel calmer too. But if a packmate catches him at just the right moment, he might tell a joke that will have them laughing all day.
