Emberwisp was a sociable little boy whose favorite place to be was in the middle of his family. He was the only pup in his litter who wasn't turned out, but he fit in perfectly with his cousins and never missed his siblings very much. He was also very attached to his mother Sparksong and uncle Lightningleap. When Sparky was home from scouting and looking after Ember personally, Lightning often came to spend time with them and became a father-figure to Ember. It was during one of these family times when Ember's future was revealed. Sparky and Lightning had taken Ember for a walk in the woods and the little pup fell behind. While running very fast to catch up with his mother and uncle, Ember leapt high in the air to avoid trampling an herb plant. Lightning was very impressed with Ember's instincts and later whispered to Mentor Swiftfoot that he wanted Ember as his apprentice.
At the Academy, Ember studied smarts and wisdom to prepare for a career as an herbalist. And his teachers were impressed with his raw intelligence and willingness to learn. He was happy at the prospect of being able to spend his life caring for his packmates, and he also wanted to impress his uncle. Even after class, he would sniff around the edges of the pack's home looking for herbs or join his uncle in the clinic to just watch him work. But his pupsitter Greywing thought that maybe he was working too hard, not giving himself enough free time to just be a pup. She often pulled him away from his endeavors to join his cousins for a game or a story from Falcontail or Pineshadow. There was a lot of life out there to be experienced that didn't have anything to do with herbs and medicine. Grey encouraged Ember to remember that and always make time for fun. That was why he chose a fun Hiding lesson for his final class.
During his apprenticeship, Ember's dedication made him the envy of all his elders. His uncle Lightning bragged that nobody ever had an apprentice like Ember. He was glued to Lightning's side every waking hour, watching everything he did and repeating it with near-perfect precision after just a few demonstrations. He enjoyed being home around his family all the time, not away like a hunter or scout would be. But Ember was still a workaholic, and it wasn't just Grey who noticed it anymore. Even Lightning began to encourage Ember to pursue other interests. Everyone needs a way to blow off steam, he told him. Taking his uncle's advice, Ember started asking Falcontail to teach him his pictogram language. He showed some aptitude for it and learned well. It wasn't long before Falcon was dictating stories to Ember to write down for him.
On his first birthday, Ember was just about glowing with pride and everyone laughed when his mom said so. Ember was still a workaholic, but it was time to take a night off and celebrate. He drank enough of his own brew to lose track of time and party almost the whole night. He felt horrible in the morning and panicked when he couldn't find his new herb bag. But Lightning had made sure to put it away in the Clinic.
Now as an adult, Ember still loves to be in the middle of his family, doing everything he can to take care of them. His stock of herbs and medicines never runs dry, so no packmate ever suffers illness or injury for long. His dedication to brewing the best fermented barley has given the pack many nights of frivolity. But he understands that taking time off for fun is important too. Ember still helps Falcontail curate his library of written story records and has promised to carry on even after Falcon's death. Ember often has a story picked out for Falcon to read to the Academy pups before the hunting team gets back home in the evening. Ember's packmates wonder how he gets so much done each day, but Ember says that he just likes to keep busy. Even his fun things are hard work and he wouldn't have it any other way.
