Canyon

you're taking a stroll on the moonlit lake beach... it's quiet, peaceful, and you can see the rays of milky moonlight illuminating the calm waters. you can subtly hear the waves of the lake lapping up against the shore, and as you pad along the strip of shore you can feel the tiny grains of sand between your paw pads. it's dark, despite the moonlight and you pause to take everything in when something catches your eye. more eyes?  you turn your head sharply, and see a backlit figure sitting, a smaller one sitting next to it. you sniff, but the scents of the lake, so close to you, drown out anything you could have pertained about these shadows.

so, cautiously, you pad towards them...

"arumu?? what are you doing here?" you exclaim, confused about his sudden appearance after.. well, after all that time.

he dips his head, and in a steady voice he says, "brother. i knew it would have been inevitable that we meet again, but i have chosen a new title.. i have changed. i am no longer who you once knew me to be.. my name is canyon now. please refer to me as such."

you shake your head, baffled. "arum- sorry, uh, canyon, you never explained why.. well, why you left."

you lower your head, and suddenly, you remember the smaller figure, now hiding between canyon's legs. a familiar face? a sudden wave of realization jolts you as you realize what happened here. "you've taken her back? you can't be serious?" you almost raise your voice, and the pup backs into canyon, whimpering. 

canyon bares his teeth slightly, but quickly calms himself down. "yes, brother, i took her back. why do you think i left? you and mother were heartless cowards when you threw her out. i realized i couldn't live with such wolves that throw out their own kin. i've found new family now. i don't need you anymore, i'm capable on my own."

he beckons to the pup and lifts his head to you, speaking once more before bounding off into the distance.

"farewell, brother. i can only hope that you have regained the kindness you so proudly boasted before she was born, in all of the years we have been without each other."
