Mementos and relics line their cave walls, none of which they can remember where they found. But they're all familiar to them, all feel like they're from a distant memory. But they're not their memories, are they? They belong to their god. The Raven Queen, the goddess of death, the enigma of the Plane of Shadows.
Why were they chosen by her? Chosen to constantly experience memories of a life that isn't theirs?
At least this allowed them to meet the love of their life. Nessus, chosen by Asmodeus, overlord of the Nine Hells, is the last person they saw themself falling for. She's ambitious, almost too much so, and known to be cruel, but Shadowfell was lured in by her charm and ended up falling in love. And the promise of one of their children someday leading the pack wasn't too bad either. Luckily their goddess doesn't seem to mind.
Even after producing the heir in the last few years of their life, their beloved son doesn't even end up getting to rule. Instead some outsider was brought in.
