The sun bore down on her back as she lay beneath the healing tree, her eyes closed and muzzle turned towards the sky, enjoying the warmth penetrating her aching joints. Her ears switched and a wolf-y grin spread when she heard her friend approach.
Fell settled beside her gently, careful not to disturb but close enough their fur mingled together. A silence settled between them but the understanding was there. The years together had taught them much about one another.
Hatt lay remembering the journey to their home so many moons ago. Since then she had honed her healing skills, assisted in guiding Fell's now strong pack when needed, taught many pups and even whelped some of her own. As her life flashed behind closed eyes she slowly felt herself falling into Fell's side, taking comfort in her friend's presence. She knew she was leaving her beloved pack in capable paws. She had taught Cetus herself, and Fell still had many moons before her to guide the new leaders into their own wisdoms.
But now the sun was setting and the stars were calling her name, begging her to step into the sky and leave her aching joints behind. And just before flying off into the night to join the rest, she felt Fell lick her muzzle and whisper sweet promises of the future.
