Biography
Gamete was a pup once. Full of vim and vigor, with a wonderous curiosity and knack for adventure. They suppose that's how they ended up here; quiet, reserved—with only vague memories of their family and friends. They've detached themselves from those connections now, from that wolf they used to be. At least they thought they did. When Gamete met Skar, they were immediately captivated. Something about the scatterbrained wolf felt familiar. He felt like home. He felt real. It wasn't long before they understood why. Following Skar home, faces Gamete knew as a pup sprung into view, spurring memories from what felt like a lifetime ago. As Skar told them of the Dreamlands, it all began to make sense. Memories they had pushed down cascaded into their mind. They remembered now. The rift. Their need to conquer the strange realm. The world made of blue had been the cause of all their strife. Gamete could barely focus as Skar spoke of how lucky they were to be able to experience what so few wolves could. How special they were to have the power to cross over. But they weren't. Gamete was never meant to cross the threshold. The Dreamlands were dangerous and fickle, unwelcoming to intruders. It left them changed. They could not believe how highly Skar spoke of it or how he was able to make it out unscathed. Though Gamete is aware that they look the same, they can feel the Lunar energy pulsing through them. They're younger now, a not altogether unpleasant result if it wasn't for the pain and the visions. Blurred images of blinding blue pass into their dreams every night, clearer now with Skar's explanation, sometimes spilling over into the waking world to taunt them. Their eyes, untouched by the realm, are often unable to separate reality from fiction as the waking world and Dreamlands merge in their mind.
Originally born in Blight Wolf Pack to Zygote and Cherri, Gamete wandered off as a pup, seeking adventure. They eventually found it in Tall Peaks, a pack where they had a stint as a pupsitter and remained until old age. Nearing the end of their days, they set off on one last adventure, not expecting it to change them forever. They found the rift by chance. Stumbling over elderly paws, they entered it, their previously malicious nature causing them to lash out at the strange creatures they came across. The generally friendly creatures and even the realm itself became vengeful, distorting Gamete's memories and causing them great pain. But one creature in particular took a liking to them; Azriel, a lunar coyote with a penchant for mischief. Pulling Gamete back into the waking realm, Azriel interrupted the transformation process. Unable to fully return to the Dreamlands, he now watches over Gamete in a sort of in-between state and is only visible to the wolf when they are in their dream state.
Gamete has no control over when they enter their dream state, and it is often a very jarring experience. Azriel claims that since Gamete was thrust back into the waking world without fully undergoing the lunar transformation, their body is unable to discern which realm it is in. Gamete blames their eyes, believing that their heterochromatic nature is what allowed them to see the rift in the first place. They favor their brown eye, claiming it's earthy color to be more in touch with reality than that of their blue eye, which they liken to the color of the Dreamlands.
Since becoming partial lead, Gamete has attempted to reconcile with the Dreamlands. With the help of the wise old lunar fox and Azriel, they are slowly becoming more in tune with navigating within their dream state. Though they are still unable to completely control when it occurs, the fox's lessons paired with the power that Skar passed down to them, they are making progress in entering and exiting the realm when they please. They are still wary of the realm and its creatures, but have found that every kind act they pursue in the Dreamlands eases their pain.
