Cassiel's amiable nature made him highly valued by Aara to play an important role for the future of the pack. She had hopes that he would take the role of the Alpha, but Cas' gentle nature drew him more towards healing and nurturing his pack members. He was often caught following Laurette, the first herbalist of this young pack, as she foraged for herbs and assembled salves to cure pack member's ailments. Though he would have accepted the Alpha role, Aara recognized that leadership was not where his heart lay. Thus, it was decided that he would take over for Laurette as the next herbalist. 

Cas quickly befriended the new pup, Lailah that was taken in by his mother. He knew his mother had plans for her as an Alpha of the pack, so her felt it necessary to help her assimilate with the pack as smoothly as possible. In addition to training as an herbalist, Cassiel would spend much of his free time with Lailah. Soon their feelings grew into something more, and they became an inseparable pair. However, the oldest members of the pack wished that Cas and Lailah would avoid their official pair bonding until after Lailah was crowned as the next alpha in order to avoid distracting her from her training. Despite this, Cas and Lailah had a litter of pups in secret while they were still young. To Cas' dismay, none of the pups survived from this litter born in the dead of winter. As a result, Cas has become extremely vigilant of the pregnant females and puppies of the pack, swearing that he would never let another pup pass and suffer the same fate as his first, secret litter.
