Biography
Ferret was raised in a large, kind-hearted pack. This large pack took in anyone who showed an interest in them, and was often taken advantage of because of it. Passerby wolves in winter would say they wanted to be in the pack, and leech off of the food, toys, and shelter the pack provided, then left as soon as it was over. Some would even have pups there, only to abandon them soon after. Around when Ferret was 10 months old, she brought up her concerns to the pack leader, who brushed it off as Ferret growing up into a rebellious dispersal wolf.
Since it was obvious that her pack no longer suited her basic needs, Ferret left her home, deciding to travel to the mountains as a lone wolf, and eventually rule the arctic alone. She would teach wolves to never trust someone so easily, becoming a force of change by being a menace. She continued this behavior until she was 1 year old. One day, while she was chasing another wolf off of her mountain territory, she saw some feathers drifting down from the treetops. She followed them, and was led to another pack's territory. Her blood boiled at the sight of them, but these strangers soon turned out to be nothing like her old pack.
One pupsitter for the pack spotted Ferret, and the whole pack was soon alerted to her presence, promptly rushing at her. Ferret dashed away as fast as she could, but still came out with a few scratches on her. The other pack even started to claim some of her territory. Ferret learned two things from that experience. One, a wolf pack could take proper care of itself without being weak towards strangers. Two, Ferret needed a wolf pack to protect herself and her territory.
Because of the strong neighboring wolf pack, Ferret wanted hardier, more experienced, meaner wolves if she wanted to survive. She quickly recruited as many skilled wolves as she could, giving them a sort of trial period in her pack to see if they were fit for it. When she finally had a skilled pack, she was 1 year and 4 months old.
The battle for her lost territory was bloody. No wolf on her side perished, but the same could not be said for the other pack. They had set up an ambush on a small patrol, then they had moved on to the camp. The hunters were out hunting, scouts presumably in the ambush, and pupsitters were the only ones left guarding the camp. Ferret charged into the camp with Flicker, distracting the pupsitters from the pups. The rest of the pack stole the pups, all weaned, from the nursery.
They didn't need to see the war.
In the end, Ferret was victorious, and pushed the rival pack's territory into oblivion. Feathers blew into and out of the enemy camp, and the pack followed. They lead into the pack's camp, and landed on a large rock in the middle of the camp. Ferret leaped up onto the rock, and listened to the whispers from the feathers, her friends. Whatever the feathers whispered, Ferret nodded, and had each wolf in the pack take a vow for the pack. Something that they would do or sacrifice for the pack, in the interest of it's well being.
Ferret was the first, and vowed never to put her packmates in jeopardy by valuing others before them.
Ferret took this vow quite literally, never hesitating to toss out any pups who would not contribute anything to the pack by staying in it. This caused heaps of trauma in her pack, but not a single wolf she traumatized broke her vow, so they tolerated her behavior. Because of this harsh selection, the pack grew physically stronger. Ferret grew old, and the pack was finally strong enough to make her dreams come true.
At the end of her life, Ferret would live in the arctic at last.
She would begin her campaign after having her final litter, in the mountains instead of the grasslands. The litter was going to be her last gift to the pack, the strongest leaders would be produced here, and she would no longer have only one heir. Two heirs would fight for the throne, ensuring the strongest survived in her pack, while one heir succeeded without having to prove their worth.
When the final litter was born, Ferret was enraged. They were nothing like she would have hoped. They were strong, but their looks held something to be desired. Ferret had a rule in her pack- Strong genetics included strong marks. These pups had few markings, and needed to be disposed of. Otherwise, her vow would be broken.
Then, just as she was about to finish the deed, her soft-hearted daughters showed up and saved the last pup in her litter. He was almost entirely black, except for a few white markings, and no other marks to be seen. Chinook and Cattail fought Ferret for the pup, and succeeded, despite Ferret's many years of fighting other wolves and winning. Her skills were finally slipping, the pack almost out of reach.
In a last-ditch effort for her pack, Ferret ran back home as fast as she could, the scent of birth still on her fur. Once there, she began ordering her packmates around, sending out hunts, scouts, and appointing a manhunt for Chinook, Cattail, and the pup. Her packmates moved around slowly, questioning her decision to kill her only heirs, and the survivor of the new litter. Questions were raised about her ability to lead, about her vow, about what happened to her litter, which must have just been born. Ferret was overwhelmed by questions, unable to answer them all before Chinook and Cattail arrived with the pup.
Chinook ordered the pack off of Ferret, and sent King to the nursery. Cattail soothed the panicking Ferret enough for Chinook to talk to Ferret alone, in the lead den. Chinook was stern, demanding that Ferret give control of the pack to her, since she broke her vow. Ferret didn't stand for this, saying that as long as she was alive, she had a claim to the pack, too. "With or without your coup, I still want what's best for this pack."
So Chinook offered a deal. Ferret would hand control of the pack over to her while Ferret nursed her pup. Because of the fight they had earlier, that pup was under Chinook's protection, and while Chinook lead the pack, the pup was not to get hurt. Ferret refused the deal. She would never bow down to another wolf. It would most certainly break her vow. Chinook put a threatening paw on Ferret's shoulder.
"You don't have a choice."
