Pupsitter: Stoneshade
Corntail was an adventurous little boy who loved to explore. He was the first pup to try crawling towards the entrance of the Nursery, and that was only the beginning. Hearing about the outside world at storytime was never enough for Corn. Not a day went by when he didn't try to get away and run around by himself. He kept his pupsitter Stoneshade on her toes all day and night with his tendency to wander off. Eventually, she took to sleeping with Corn tucked right up against her, so she would know if he tried to sneak away. His mom Goldensong was proud that her son was so curious, just as she had been as a pup, but she realized that the worry she had caused her own mom was coming back to her. Each day, Golden would spare a moment to pray to Greywing "Lionsbane", the legendary pupsitter, to protect Corn.
At the Academy, Corn studied speed and agility to strengthen his weakest stats. Keeping Corn engaged was a challenge, and he would often ask if the class could go out and practice away from the dens. None of his teachers fell for that ploy, of course. Corn's escape attempts were well known by all and an injury he suffered during a Hiding class had put everyone on alert. But when he was focused, he was actually a good student, and improved his skills steadily despite distractions. Even so, Mentor Moondream decided that he needed his last lesson assigned and gave him Pathfinding. Though he'd been recommended as a pupsitter, he couldn't be kept at home all the time and he needed to learn how to watch out for himself out there.
During his apprenticeship, Corn stayed at the Academy to help care for the pups who came through after him. Being older then, he was allowed to wander away from home a lot more than he had been as a younger pup. But he knew that he was expected to be there for lessons and bedtime with the pups. Much to the surprise of many of his elders, Corn stuck to that schedule like clockwork. It seemed that a few hours of exploration each day were enough to satisfy him. His wandering nature, and the fact that he was allowed to indulge it, impressed the puppies and earned their respect. And he found that he liked spending time with them, instilling a love of adventure in them too.
On his first birthday, Corn almost didn't come to the party. Being out in the woods exploring would be more fun than drinking and acting stupid with everyone else. But he knew that this was a tradition going back generations and missing it would not be acceptable. So he went and sat there nursing a fermented barley all night.
Now as an adult, Corn uses his love of exploring to his advantage as a pupsitter. Pups under his care go hiking and camping every weekend and they loved it. Corn believes in introducing pups to real world challenges to encourage creative problem-solving. And even if they try to wander away, he knows every hiding spot in the territory and finds them no matter how hard they try to hide. Dealing with puppies is always a thrill, so Corn has no need for artificial thrills and shuns fermented barley. But he knows he can't cut himself off from his packmates and makes time to be around them sometimes.
