Duskflame was a keen little girl who stayed eager and lighthearted despite being a sickly runt at the start of her life. In a litter of five, it's not unusual for one pup to be weaker than the others. But Dusk had the added challenge of under-developed lungs, which made breathing more difficult. She was often heard wheezing in the nest among her bigger siblings. Herbalist Emberwisp worried about her and frequently pulled her from the Nursery to keep her in the Clinic for a few days at a time. She wasn't able to run and play with the other pups all that often, due to her labored breathing. But through it all, Dusk continued to smile and live in the moment. She bonded with Ember as a father-figure and enjoyed watching him work while she laid up in the Clinic. Ember was very fond of Dusk in return and taught her to read and write before any of the other pups were even interested.
At the Academy, Dusk's good attitude continued and even improved. Her breathing problems eased as she got older and she was able to be more active with the other pups. She was assigned to study wisdom and smarts and she was an excellent student, earning the top spot in all her lessons. Her teachers praised her for her eagerness to learn and respectfulness and her mother was very proud of her. But it was Ember that she ran to after class to boast about her latest achievements. And he was happy to hear about them. Dusk showed great aptitude for herbs and medicine and the pupsitters recommended her for the herbalist role, which she and Ember were both overjoyed to hear. They couldn't wait to start her apprenticeship.
During her apprenticeship, Dusk wasted no time moving into the Clinic to stay by Ember's side full time. That wasn't usually allowed, because it was easy for a youngster to misuse an herb by mistake if they lived right beside them. But everyone knew how closely Dusk had observed Ember's work when she was little. The Clinic had been home to her more than the Nursery and she was far less likely to make a dangerous mistake than the average apprentice. And Dusk's prior experience proved invaluable on a day when Ember had left her in the Clinic to go foraging alone. A packmate came in with a severe cough and Dusk remembered exactly how to make the cough medicine that had helped her so many times. Other herbalists might have scolded their apprentices for taking such liberties, but Ember praised Dusk's initiative and allowed her to help mix medicines more often.
On her first birthday, Dusk ran home from morning foraging to get to the party, much faster than she was ever able to run as a pup. As a former runt, this was an especially important day for her. Her survival was not guaranteed at birth and she was well aware that she was lucky to be alive and looking forward to such a bright future.
Now as an adult, Dusk's positive attitude is one of many tools she uses to help heal the sick and injured. Laughter is the best medicine, she says, and always keeps a joke handy to lighten things up in the Clinic. She has also brought a lighter touch to her fermented barley brewing and her batches have a more refined taste than those of her predecessors. Dusk's appreciation for reading has led her to write down all the recipes and best practices that she learned from Ember, as well as case studies she has experienced or heard about. The legacy of excellence in Honeywood Pack herbalists that was passed down to her by Ember means a lot to her and she has dedicated herself to preserving it and passing it on one day.
