When the Stars Align ✩彡

This is a roleplay between Hollow Howls and Goblin! You are welcome to watch, if you're that kinda weirdo, but please do not reply to this forum unless you are Goblin or I.

A passing comet has interrupted the crossing of the planets, causing abnormalities with spirits and the spirit realm. A curious scholar travels into a town that seems to be experiencing more significant affects, eager to learn about the event, and encounters a shady djinn posing as a human. Will the scholar learn all about the spirit realm and assist in keeping the chaotic forces of spirits from impacting the living world? Will the djinn take control over the scholar and gain exactly what she was hunting for? Or maybe they'll manage to meet in the middle and benefit each other? Only time will tell.

Alfie, a scholar decently well-known within her field but just as controversial, slowly made her way down the streets of a town she had never been to before. She doesn't travel much if she can help it, but the opportunity to get a good look at an occurrence as unheard of as the one taking place now was too good to let pass. She didn't have as much experience with the spirit realm as some other topics of interest, but oh boy did she have knowledge on astronomy.

She kept an eye open for any building sign that offers a bed to sleep in during her stay, eventually spotting a sign that read "Inn" and happily made her way inside. It was a little sketchy inside, as random town inns tend to be, and the receptionist was a rather unfriendly guy, but it was going to have to do. After a quick transaction and a stop to put down some bags in her new room, she immediately went back out wandering the town to scope an area that would be fit to observe the sky.

"Fortunes! Get your fortunes here!" The man next to her shouted, trying to draw in unsuspecting customers. Their stall was placed just a few venders into the busy marketplace. The fabric awning over the simple structure cloaking a majority of the table in front of her and her own form in shadows and keeping her out of the warm rays of the sun. It got warm in this area, even without the help of light trying to scorch your skin. So there she sat, inhaling deeply from a short, straight pipe while she awaited.

She normally didn't smoke as often as she was, however the tribal like tattoos spread across her back, shoulders, and upper arms felt like they were crawling against her skin. Not to mention, the wish she had given last night didn't work out exactly as she intended. That was something that hadn't happened since she was nearly five years old. Those details had put her mind on edge and the exotic mixture she was so fond of was a great stress reliever. At least the affects of her past wishes didn't seem to be messed up, hence why she was still working her little scam.

Prior to arriving in this lively town, Alfie had already done a good amount of research on where good locations might be. The challenge to finding a suitable observation spot was that a clear view of the sky and high elevation weren't the only factors here; spiritual activity was just as important. Possible locations to satisfy all requirements were slim, but she managed to think of three options. First, the obvious cemetery. Easily ticks off the spiritual activity box with plenty of space without  an obstructed view of the sky, but was lacking in elevation. Plus, setting up camp in such a publicly accessible place was just begging for either robbery or legal complications. Second, an abandoned home, of which this town held a few. Again, spiritual activity is likely to be high, but she would have to set up on the roof and her chances of getting stabbed were too high for comfort. Lastly, there was always the option of hiking up a mountain and plopping her stuff down there. Excellent for astronomical research, awful for spiritual activity. The poor academic wanted to bang her head against a wall. She would've simply walked to scout the places she had in mind, but her feet hurt.

She weighed her options and racked her brain for options she might've overlooked on a well-loved pocket notebook. She scribbled her thoughts sitting on a bench in an obnoxiously loud marketplace. The overlap of sounds, smells, and motion made logical thinking feel like trying to wade through molasses. However, at the same time it reminded her why she was here. Around her were thousands of intertwined yet completely separate lives. Is it all truly determined by chance? The cosmos were perfect evidence for the argument that maybe it is just a coincidence after all. Just an inconceivable number of atoms, waves, and energy stirred together, left to bump into each other until eventually they make something new. That's why she's spent so long focusing on the stars, but now thinking of the fact that there's a whole other realm of existence coexisting with the one she's familiar with has got her scratching her head. Maybe there's something influencing everything after all?  After spiraling into an existential crisis for a couple minutes, Alfie shut her notebook and shoved it in a canvas bag slung around her shoulder. Massaging her temples in an attempt to soothe her stress headache, she resigned to simply leaning back and people-watching in the sun for a little while. She couldn't help but wonder if spirits ever got headaches too.

Her day always seemed dull, excluding a few small details. One of which was the very stand she was at, it wasn't difficult to pick up on a few details and scam richer folk into a fix for their 'dark future'. Infact that was how she obtained most of her marks. Her brows furrowed at the memory. She was behind. Her bastard parents had claimed more than her at this age. But she was being strategic, she reminded herself. While they rose to power quickly, she would ensure she never lost it. She brushed a small tuff of hair from her face as she refocused. Just in time too, his companion's repeated shouting had drawn in another customer.

Pulling on a friendly face, she took the few silver pieces offered as payment, playing along with the foreigner's attitude. She took her hand, allowing one of the wishes she had claim to work as she started her act. Dramatically, she acted as if she was reading the stranger's past and future. While in reality, she was tuning into the images her mind formed, having to restrain a smirk at what she found. A man, it was always a man when it came to the fair skinned women that visited her stall. With a bit of a flare, she told the woman exactly what she had wanted: she would be proposed to by someone important to her. Like clock work, the stranger seemed impressed and pleased, offering a couple more pieces before leaving, incredibly giddy.

Once she was deep enough in the sea of people she laughed briefly. "You gotta get two more, Nitali." Her companion spoke, catching her attention before continuing. "I've got a bet running with Jamahl. I win if you get to ten lovestruck fools before ten money hungry bastards." The smug smirk on his face only helped to amuse her, shaking her head in amusement.

"You remember you lost to Jamahl to a similar event, not even a month ago?" She asked, an entertained smirk now taking over her own face as she tossed the handful of silver pieces in her hand a few times before pocketing them in a smooth movement. An offended gasp came from him, huffing dramatically and crossing his arms. "Yeah, I did. But this time, I took what he betted on last time. I stole his winning dog, so now he has to loose."

"Sure, because that's how it works." She rolled her eyes before taking another inhale from the thin pipe. "Fine, I'll keep it up until your bet is completed, but then we're going to get something to eat." She always forgot that her flesh body actually required outside energy, not something she had to worry about as literal fire. Thinking about it, she couldn't exactly remember the last time she ate; not this morning for sure and she was pretty sure she didn't bother with sustenance last night. A fist pump from her side caught her attention, pulling her from the short train of thought, shaking her head briefly before giving him a look. He paused before returning to his advertisement, cupping his hands around his mouth as they continued with their simple business venture.

It didn't take long for the warmth of the sun beating on her sheltered skin and the white noise of people hustling to nearly lull her into sleep. The only thing that prevented it was the delightful scent of garlic and spices filling the air. Food. Of course, food! How was one supposed to think clearly with an empty stomach. Plus, the spiced, savoury aroma of whatever's being cooked up in the stall nearby would have drawn her in regardless of how hungry or full she was. She gathered her bag and smoothed out the wrinkles of her ankle-length skirt before promptly making her way over. The stall had a few stools in front for customers to sit with a canopy to shield from the sun. She approached while digging through her bag for enough change for the purchase.

"Ah, it looks as good as it smells," Alfie hummed, placing her change on the counter and taking a seat. She watched as the vendor worked his magic, switching easily between managing flatbreads, curry, and customers.
"Aye, best in the town they say," The vendor replied with a grin. "And if you ask me, I say there's nothing that beats a fresh cooked meal on a beautiful day like this. Say, I don't recognize you. You from out of town?"
"Sure am. I won't be here long, just got a bit of work to do. Don't ask about this weird question, I'm sure you've heard a lot, but would you happen to know of anything strange or supernatural going on around here?" Alfie decided to ask, leaning in with interest. The vendor gave a friendly chuckle.
"Of course! There always seems to be some inexplicable happenings in this place. Just whispers here and there, though. Not much that can be narrowed down." The vendor placed her meal in front of her.
Alfie tilted her head. That was both helpful and so incredibly unhelpful at the same time. "So... What is it? Ghosts?"
"Not sure, you'd have to ask around. I try to keep my head out of that business, gives me the creeps."
"Fair enough, thanks for the tip," Alfie nodded, switching her focus to scooping up the curry.

A distraught cry escaped her male companion, slouching over in defeat. "I told ya. You're pretty trash at betting." She smirked, leaning back against her simple chair. As she had expected, Talib had lost the bet while Jamahl had won. Though to be fair, it had been nine to nine when the final person was appraised. Flabbergasted, the man tried to come up with something to reply with. "I'm not trash! I've just got bad luck is all. There was more posh women out today."

"I didn't notice a difference and I'm the one making the money. Maybe I should have gotten in on that bet, made you pay for lunch." She taunted, pushing off her seat and flipping a sign to point the word 'closed, will return' to the street side. Ushering the disappointed man from the small stall with a hand to his back, they stepped into the warm sun. She stretched her arms behind her back, feeling the tension from remaining seated in one spot for so long dissipate. "Let's go, food."

She started weaving through the crowd without another comment. Being familiar with how the mob clustered and shifted, it wasn't difficult to navigate through the sea of bodies in search the familiar stall. Her eyes lit up at the wooden sign displaying a bowl of meats and rice. Granted, she wasn't very into food, but this particular seller was pretty cheap for the quality of the meals sold. As she approached the counter, the male slipped by her again and rushed towards the counter. "Make it extra spicy!" He barked in excitement, sliding onto an old stool.

Sighing, the woman slipped into the spot next to him. "Just a regular for me." She added, fishing the payment from a pocket and pushing the change forward. "You're paying me back after you give Jamahl your bet." She spoke to her companion, giving his side a jab with her elbow only to receive a complaint about her having more money.
