1x1 with Maladi {Jedi}

Summer had shifted to autumn rather recently. The leaves upon the trees had started their change to the various colors fall often brought. It started with the bright, pretty colors - reds, yellows, and oranges - before they would eventually alter to a crusty brown later down the line. Temperatures had begun to drop as well, hovering mostly around the mid 50's on a nice day. Critters would prepare themselves for hibernation, or at least, the ones that did sleep through the winter. This left the rest to fend for themselves in the cold when it would come along.

For now, the wolves were content with the autumn weather. Though, humans frequented the forest more often with the hunting season arriving. It was almost perfect - the wolves would be able to check out the town with hunters off on their trucks and if some were feeling daring, even watch the hunters themselves. These wolves had the ability to shapeshift into a human form after all. This made it much easier for them to navigate the town below and intergrade with the humans. Most liked their wolf lives, but it was often they were sent to the town to study these beings - dubbed as humans by their own species.

Humans. They were odd creatures. Living in buildings manmade by themselves as well as transporting themselves around in metal machines they called 'cars'. They had legs, could they not use them well? Not to mention the fact they dressed in fabrics to cover their furless skins. What happened when winter came along? What did the humans do for the season? Too many questions and answers the wolves may not receive easily.

Where is he? Shenzi thought as she gazed around the forest just outside of a pack's main area. He should have been here by now, right? The young female wolf huffed with slight annoyance as she sat down on the earth beneath her. Shenzi had been paired with the brute a few months back. They were kind of in a forced relationship, set up by her parents. They thought Shenzi could use another 'lover' after what happened to her previous one. It wasn't like he was a bad wolf. She knew him from the packs around the area, just never expected to be set up with him.

She waited impatiently, tapping a paw on the ground. They were to scout the human town, take a look around while it was growing dark when most were in their homes.  Something about 'bonding time' and 'doing good for the packs'. The mere idea to Shenzi was agitating. She was doing just fine without anyone and felt she could take on this task alone anyways. However, Shenzi was more interested in being nice to him than shooing him away. Besides, it's not like she could just dump the poor fellow. She wanted to give him a chance despite having a bit of low trust towards the male. But that was normal for Shenzi. After what happened in her early stages of life, one could not blame her for having trust issues.

"Logyn!"

The ice eyed wolf froze and sighed as he lazily turned towards the small voice that called out to him. A small, brown pup cowered under the bushes that covered the opening of their den from the incoming inclement weather that hailed the arrival of autumn. He tried to take a step back, only for the pup to whine and crawl closer to him. "Charity," he sighed, returning to the den and crouching down to her level. "I have to leave, you know that." Not that he had much of a choice in the matter. He was lucky he'd been allowed the courtesy to remain in his original pack grounds through the winter season, a courtesy that would only remain so long as he was cooperative.

"I don't want you to go," Charity whimpered as she touched her nose to his. "I'm scared." And who could blame her? The past several months had not been particularly kind to any of them. Their pack had suffered great misfortune ever since the wolves' shifting powers had been discovered, and Logyn had been chosen as the sacrifice to hopefully make things right. However "right" he could make things through a forced relationship. If a relationship was even what you could call his pairing to the she-wolf that was a relative stranger a few months ago. She'd made it no secret that she did not care for him, and Logyn had to admit he wasn't the fondest of her either, after their previous interactions. But he had to carry on. He had to try to make things work. For his pack. For Charity.

It was this unfortunate sense of duty that led him to gently nudge the young pup back into her home. "There's no need to be frightened. Mother will be home soon, and regardless of that, it's far past your bedtime. Healer Shadow is just across the thicket if there's an emergency." He glanced over his shoulder towards the ring of berry bushes that signified the healer's den. Perhaps he could request she come stay with Charity until their mother returned from her final hunt of the day. On the other claw, he wouldn't be around for much longer, and Charity needed to learn how to be independent before then. "I have to go. I know you can be brave for me." He nuzzled against her forehead and gently licked between her ears before nudging her back into the den. When he was satisfied that she would not try to follow or otherwise hinder him further, he departed, very late, for his mate's pack grounds.

Of course, he found her waiting. Just his luck. She was on time. Again. And he was late. Again. He could only assume she hadn't mentioned his continual tardiness to anyone else, or he was certain he would have been pulled from his own pack early. He supposed that was a kindness he could appreciate her for. Logyn took a deep breath and straightened his stance as he approached the grey and black she-wolf. "Shenzi," he called to her, dipping his head as he approached and gently pressing his nose to her neck as an apology. "I'm sorry I'm late." He was sure there were no excuses she nor her pack would accept, and he truly did not want to drag Charity into the mess of this arranged courtship. "Shall we get going?"

The impatient wait for Logyn had finally fell from Shenzi's shoulders as he arrived. Late as per usual. Even with his apology, the she wolf was annoyed. She pulled away from him when he touched his nose to her neck. "You realize we could both get in trouble for you lack of attention to the time," she huffed and lifted herself to her paws. "But whatever, you're here now, so let's get going," she noted and shook out her fur to rid it of debris.

Shenzi tolerated Logyn. As mentioned, he wasn't a terrible wolf. His company was welcomed, but not with open arms. She had made it clear her interest in him was low to none, even if indirectly. However, she did this for her pack. Having very little family left around, Shenzi could take what she could get in regard to company and companionship.

A slight breeze chilled Shenzi, sending a brief shiver crawling down her spine. "I know they want us to take a peek around at night. From what we know so far, humans are diurnal - spending their days awake and in slumber at night," she spoke, mulling over the facts the wolves already knew. Her gaze shifted to Logyn briefly before she looked away and started off, flicking her tail in a silent signal for him to 'come along'. "It would probably be best to shift a little closer to the town, and to remain in human form until we reach the woods again," she paused and looked back at the male. "This way they don't suspect much. What do you think?" The fact Shenzi was asking his opinion was a step in the right direction for her.

Shenzi traveled through the forest effortless, weaving around trees and ducking under low branches. Despite it being dark, it was rather easy to maneuver through the woods until she reached the edges where the looming trees thinned out. She hadn't waited for long for her mate to arrive before shifting. It was rather effortless to do so. After a quick shift, Shenzi appeared as a young adult female with raven colored hair similar to her underbelly fur. It reached just a few inches past her shoulders, which she flicked out of the way and fixed as she would her fur during the rough periods. Stumbling a few times to get the hang of her two legs, she quickly adjusted and turned halfway to find Logyn.

Logyn's jaw set as Shenzi pulled away and dismissed his apology. Couldn't she accept that he was trying here? She wasn't the one being ripped away from her pack. She wasn't the one leaving her younger sister and mother on their own. She wasn't the one losing everything she ever knew to uncertainty. Granted, he was not doing himself any favors by keeping her in the dark over the problems of his own pack. But then, would she even care if he did? She certainly didn't seem to have any more interest towards his past than she did towards his present.

He followed her through her the forest as they trekked towards the human settlement, listening as she partially rambled and partially planned. Normally his shtick, but whatever kept the peace. "That sounds like an effective plan," he agreed, shaking his fur out as the wind blew through it. Reducing suspicions from the humans should likely be their immediate priority. The last thing they needed was for any of the bipeds to come snooping around the forest and discovering the pack grounds. There were too many that could be hurt by the cruelty of human hunters.

Logyn followed close behind his mate as she traversed through the forest, watching as the fading light from the sun gave way to moonlight shining on the pale fur of her back. Even if they didn't tend to see eye to eye, he could appreciate that she was a beautiful she-wolf. He certainly could have done much worse with an arranged mate. And something told him that she would surpass whatever standards humans had for beauty when she shifted. He took a moment to observe her, before following suit. It was painless, but that didn't make it any less jolting for Logyn to suddenly find himself standing at well over twice his normal height. His eyes remained the same sharp, pale blue, and his hair took on the pale blonde of the lightest shade of his coat. And how did humans balance on a mere two limbs? It was practically barbaric.

"Which areas of town would you like to observe first?" he asked as he watched Shenzi adjust to maneuvering on two leg. They were only there to glean information for the packs, but a plan of attack would still be the smart choice. In his opinion, at least. The could wander around for hours, but would they really learn anything that way?

Shenzi brushed a few strands of her raven hair away from her face. The wind certainly didn't help that feat, not to mention the chilly feeling she received bearing no fur now. Her blue-green eyes stared down at the human town. Lights were on in a few places, mostly the streets but a few buildings had their inner lights on as well. They'd have to be cautious at night. With humans sleeping during the night, not many would be out at night. Any that were wandering that late, could hold hostility of some sort. It was unnatural. But then again, Shenzi was prepared. Knowing Logyn was with her brought comfort, surprisingly.

She side-glanced at her mate as he spoke before bringing her eyes back down to the town. Her mind centered around thoughts, primarily ones regarding his question. It was probably best to have a plan of attack here after all. "I'm unsure right now," Shenzi admitted as she studied the streets and buildings below them. A chill crawled up her spine and she shook in response. "Hm.." she hummed once. "I'd say maybe some of the more discrete areas. I'm wondering if they'll offer some sort of secrets." Her head turned to look directly at Logyn. "Keep up!" Shenzi offered a slight challenging laugh before starting down the slight hill to the town.

Shenzi kept herself hidden briefly, making sure no one was watching before emerging from the tree line and undergrowth. She brushed off debris such as leaves and dirt to make herself appear more presentable. Not that she cared what the humans thought, but if she looked like she lived in the woods - they may become suspicious.  "Logyn!" she called quietly to the male. "Never asked, what areas you think we should check about?" Her eyes shifted to look just sideways at her mate. She may seem rather ignorant and rude at times, but the female did have her own soft side. Besides, if they were to be mates - even arranged - they might as well cooperate together.

Logyn was quiet as he followed along just behind his mate, letting her take the lead as they made their way into the human city. There was something so unnatural about it that set the hair on the back of his neck on end. How did these bipedal creatures live in such a claustrophobic, imposing society? Their packs were small and solitary, if they had packs at all. There were loners among them, and those were the ones he was most wary of. What was more dangerous than someone who had nothing to lose? He didn't like it. And he certainly didn't like being forced to study them. What was the point? They'd successfully been avoiding the humans for generations, and now they were just supposed to run headlong into them?

Still, even he had to admit that learning from the humans hadn't been fruitless. Some of their customs even seemed endearing, perhaps. He'd seen humans joining the appendages they called hands as a sign of affection, or pressing their bodies together and twining their forelegs together. Logyn found his gaze drifting down to Shenzi's hand as they walked, his thoughts only broken as she called his name. What did he think? Not something he had expected to be asked when it came to her. Chasing after secrets could be a risky venture so late at night. However, it wasn't like doing so during the day would be easier. More eyes would theoretically prevent unsavory encounters, but it would also restrict them greatly in terms of places they could explore. No, if there was ever a time to explore the shadier parts of the city, it was now.

"I think you're right," he said, pushing the blond curls from his eyes. "We should take the chance we have while exploring at night to check out the seedier parts of the city." They would be safe so long as they stayed together. "Word on the street is that the west side of town is where a lot of under the table business goes down. Could uncover something interesting for the elders." And if they didn't, it would just be another uneventful night scouting the area. Bonding as it were.

Shenzi shifted her gaze to the streets and around the darker parts of the civilization. Their alleys were dimly lit, only the entrances showered in what little light the lamps gave off. The rest of the area was decently lit up in intervals. Pools of light cascaded in certain parts of the streets, the rest shrouded in darkness. She never understood it. Using light to ignite the streets in something other than darkness when they didn't even remain awake to use it. Shaking the thought from her mind, her attention turned back to Logyn as he spoke.

"Sounds good," she replied, her gaze turning to his eyes. She studied them briefly. Admittingly, Shenzi had respect for the brute for putting up with her. It wasn't foreign to Shenzi that she could be a bit of a bitch sometimes. She couldn't use her past as an excuse anymore, however. Shenzi blinked once before turning her gaze to the streets. "West side eh? Sounds like it could be interesting if so," the female noted, nodding at her mate before stalking off.

Shenzi remained in the shadows mostly, stepping into the light of the streetlamps on occasion. Drawing attention to the two of them was last on her list. The less attention they drew to themselves, the better. Humans roaming around at night? Not unheard of, but uncommon for the species to begin with. Shenzi tossed her raven hair with a flick of her head, her fingers moving effortlessly through the strands as she fixed herself. "What do you think we might find on the western side of this place anyways?" Shenzi asked to bring some conversation with her mate. Her head turned to give him most of her attention versus only half of it, as she usually would do. Right now, Shenzi wasn't as distracted and felt she could offer Logyn more of her attention.  "I personally don't think it'll be anything interesting. Not much has been, at least in my opinion," she shrugged at the thought. One never knew what could be found, especially with a mysterious species as these bipedal beings.

Logyn lifted his shoulders in a helpless shrug as his mate questioned him further. How was he supposed to know any more about this strange world than she was? They only ever came here together. Or at least, he had only come here with her. He wouldn't be moving in with her and her pack until the spring time, and thus had no idea what his mate chose to do in her spare time. "I'm not sure. I overheard some humans discussing a place they called a speakeasy, last time we were in town. I did some research and discovered that the term traditionally refers to buildings where illegal activity takes place."

It certainly seemed like something their elders may take an interest in. Humans willfully ignoring the laws of their land? It didn't seem too unlikely from creatures who seemed so solitary, but what was the point of their laws if places like these existed? And what would it mean for their packs? Would there be wolves that decided they would rather live among humans and their rebellious ways? Or perhaps they would search for places in the forest they could turn into so called speakeasies of their own. There was know way for them to know. And the lack of knowledge seemed very dangerous when it came to these bipeds.

From what he knew of Shenzi, she wasn't one to back down from a dangerous situation. Still, he looked down at her and tilted his head to observe her as they walked. "We don't have to go looking for trouble, though. There's plenty of places we can check out tonight." Safer places. More boring places. Places that would ensure they returned to their packs and families unscathed. But where was the fun in that?
