This is a backup record regarding the story of my darling face-stealing specter, The Jack of Fades.

Note: Out of respect for his hosts, who spent their own money and resources in order to feed and care for my travelers, please do not post here unless you are hosting or have hosted Jack previously. Thank you!

Original Lore:

The Jack of Fades (also known as "High Jack" or "Faceless Jack") is a creature thought to only exist in fairy tales.

According to legend, the Jack was once just an ordinary wolf pup, who was accidentally left behind during a den move. By the time the pack even realized their pup was gone, they assumed it was already too late – and the Jack was left alone; unmourned, and soon forgotten.

Said to be the manifestation of unresolved grief, the Jack is a shapeshifter -- with the power to mimic the voice and appearance of any wolf it encounters. Above all else, the Jack desperately wants a family to call it's own. But believing itself to be undesirable, it likes to steal the faces of lost loved ones (both dead and missing), in the hopes of being welcomed into their pack.

While it rarely causes any direct harm to its hosts, the Jack can be a rather cruel and capricious creature. It feeds on the emotions of those around it – but no matter how much love it is given, it is never enough. If it witnesses others expressing affection for someone other than itself, the Jack may become jealous, and attempt to trick or lure away the wolf in question, so it can replace them instead.

The Jack cannot maintain its disguises forever, however – and the longer the Jack stays with a pack, the more its voice and appearance will start to twist and distort, often causing the wolf it's imitating to behave in unusual or out-of-character ways.

However, even after the Jack's true nature is revealed, it can be quite difficult to get rid of. While it can be wounded, the Jack cannot be killed – and if driven off, it is very likely to simply return later with a new face. It is also a very convincing actor, and few wolves are eager to harm their loved ones, even if they know it isn't real.

However, the only thing the Jack desires more than to be loved, is to be mourned.

So the only way to get rid of the Jack for good, is for the host pack to acknowledge that their loved one is gone, and never coming back. Often, this is done by asking the Jack to lie down, and having an elaborate funeral ceremony over the "body", where everyone can say goodbye. After which, the Jack will temporarily be sated, and wander into the woods.  That is, until it starts to gets hungry again, and must find a new family on which to feed.

Lore: (Sorry if this is too long! I got a bit carried away)

It prowled in the desert, a land so dry and barren that it was full of death and sorrow. A perfect place for The Jack to go first in this new land.

It had felt a strong amount of disharmony practically calling to it around this area, and they were excited. The Jack was painfully lonely, haven't not found companionship or even shapeshifted in quite some time.

Finally- they found it. A quaint densite, nothing special on first glance other then the occasional wolf with glowing marks or a third eye. But inside it was filled to the brim with conflict and strife, The Jack could feel the grief and bitterness radiating from various pack members, all of them… just waiting to love it.

It prowled around for some time, searching for the perfect target- until it stopped upon seeing that A young male, who looked to be about two years old, was comforting what The Jack assumed to his
mother
. He was trying to coax her out of a small shadowy corner, when another female, who based on smell must be the the older sister came and pulled him away, saying;

"Cmon Shensin. You know this happens- she's just gotta come out of it herself. She just misses your dad."

The male looked crestfallen, reluctantly following his sister. The Jack was ecstatic, perfect! So perfect- such a perfect situation! The spirits must have granted it this beautiful family to love. Quickly, it
reached deep into the mind of the mourning mother, pulling out memories of a powerful red wolf littered with scars and a far away look in his purple eyes, and took his shape.

As The Jack appeared in the den, ready to announce that it- he now it guessed, was home, it found itself being tackled in a rage by a hardened looking she-wolf who shared it's host's purple eyes. She looked infuriated,

"What are you doing here!"

Her gaze faltered

"I- this isn't possible. Sketch-"

She took a moment to make sure it of what she was seeing and stepped off, looking confused. The Jack pushed into her mind and discovered that this was it's host, Sketch's, younger sister. It was disgruntled to realize that there was far too much negative feelings towards it coming from her, but it latched on to the confusion and glimpses of positivity. Maybe it could work with this.

"It's really me Rhythm- your brother, i'm home."

That's when more wolves came out, whispering and murmuring, couldn't believe their eyes. Whispers of "Traitor" and "Must be a trick of the spirits" hit The Jack's ears. It ignored them, trying to find the grieving mate he pulled this body from in the first place.

She showed herself, her son following nervously and suspiciously behind. "My love… you're alive?" a wave of intense affection hit it like a refreshing meal after being starved for so long.

The Jack found her name in her memories,

"Bear! It's me, I missed you so much dear!"

It realized it must not sound like Sketch with the way she paused, a bit confused, but she brushed it off and ran into to nuzzle him. No matter, it would perfect it's subject's mannerisms soon. For now, it relished in the warmth.

The son looked up at the image of his father, a bit awestruck. The Jack wondered if they had ever properly met.

"My child- come, I'm so sorry I was gone. You've grown up to be strong."

Shensin still seemed reserved but still smiled and eventually joined in on the family hug. His half-siblings were off to the side, looking uncertain. The Jack realized these must have been Bear's pup's before she got with Sketch, but it was still bothered by their distance and wanted their attention anyways. After all, the bigger the family the more love there is to consume.

Rhythm stared at The Jack, cold, unblinking, it could feel a million thoughts flying through her head. She was going to be a problem.

————-

Over the next few days the Jack learned that Sketch was a bit of a rebel and a traitor to the pack, siding with some spiteful wolf who almost tore the hollow apart as his right hand man. The Jack was a bit annoyed at this, for this would mean that it would have to work extra hard to receive what it wanted.

As the time went on it grew stronger as more and more wolves started opening up to it, becoming more and more confused about their feelings towards it's host, and repressed all of this pent up pain in favor of "keeping the peace"

Rhythm was the only one openly hostile towards The Jack. It hated that so much- so one night it went to fix that problem.

It just wanted to talk to her. Probably. Unless she got too frustrating. Or The Jack got bored.

Rhythm was keeping guard over the camp in the middle of the night, as she seemingly always did. She almost never slept. The Jack in Sketch's body came and sat by her, just to talk.

"Hey there"

"What."

"Just wanted to talk to you, i'm your brother after all and you haven't payed me any mind past angry glances and curt comments."

It felt her anger flash up, but her face remained stoic. "What would you like me to say?"

It tried to reach into her mind, trying to figure out what she wanted to hear that would make her love Sketch again, but it was just a jumbled, screaming mess. It found some flashes of memories, though, and it grasped onto them to try and sound convincing.

A teenage Sketch and a puppy Rhythm were arguing over prey, she stuck out her tongue at him and he scoffed, "what's your problem! Just give it to me-"

It Spoke. "Say what your problem is! Just tell me what I can do to make this better!"

Sketch, now an adult, taking a hyper apprentice Rhythm on her first hunt. His eyes were filled with pride and love while she asked him questions.

"You betrayed the pack!

"You betrayed me"

"I'm supposed to just- forgive you after all of that?"

Sketch and Rhythm training together in a dark cavern, watched over by a large, sinister looking white male.

"You betrayed them too! We both believed him"

"Yeah- but, but I realized what he was doing after he got you to kill Balko- his own kin!"

Two month old Rhythm standing helplessly under her brother, while he desperately tried to shield her from the attack on their birth pack.

"It's not like I would kill YOU. I loved you Rhythm! I love you- I love you- I love-"

"SHUT UP"

Everything was silent for a moment.

Rhythm Standing over Sketch's limp body. Her jaws bloody. She stared at their horrified mother, face contorted into a pain that couldn't be described with simple words at the sight of her adopted children. Through her sobs, Rhythm pleaded with someone, anyone to hear her. Nobody did before she was chased away.

The Jack noticed Bear in the background, coming out of the den to silently watch apprehensively.

Rhythm spoke first. Her voice was shakey.

"How… dare you. Ever imply that I didn't love you."

Now the whole pack had come out to see the show. Rhythm's mate padded up to them, looking worried,
but she still kept her distance so the two could finish their conversation.

The Jack tried to remedy the situation. "I didn't know that you- I mean- I didn't mean to imply that!"

Rhythm sniffed. She looked at the Jack and laughed defeatedly with shimmering eyes and a sad smile,

"It's not you- is it?"

It flicked it's ear. No no, it was so close, not now!

She continued, pressing her head into it's chest.

"I know it's not you bubba. I know. I dont know who or what you are but… it's not my Sketch. My Sketch is dead, we made stupid choices and he's dead."

She breathed in sharply, pulling her face back. "But I still love him, I do, I do" She laughed again, "I love my boneheaded traitor of a brother" A genuine smile grew across her tearful face, she sounded resolved. The Jack felt an odd peace.

The Jack stayed still, it glanced back at Bear, who looked as though she had been clawed in the face. Her children were surrounding her, trying to comfort her. Nobody knew where to go from here.
——
A pack meeting was called, the lead pair stood up in front of everyone, The Jack in the center, having taken it's true form and looking embarrassedly at the ground. It's plan foiled.

Aviala, the pack leader, having some experience with spirits and trickers, assumed this creature had a reason for being here. The Jack simply said it will not leave until it's loved enough. No-one knew what this meant, until Bear stepped up. She hadn't spoken all day.

"I want to hold a funeral for Sketch. A proper one. I know that he did- what he did, but he was one of us. He was my mate. I want to finally honor him." She looked pleadingly at the alphas, "please"

So a funeral was set up, with The Jack taking the form of Sketch one last time. It gracefully curled up into a ball in the center of the shrine of nature and prey made for it, as the pack said a few words,
placed a ceremonial silver headset on it's body, and sat vigil. After the funeral the pack couldn't wake it, couldn't move it, and as soon as no eyes were on it anymore The Jack of Fades was gone.

Lore: The Jack moved silently though to the trees of the Coniferous Forest, hearing the noise of wolves they hid and watched 2 old wolves who were called Brooksplash and Smalldew, they could tell, they were deeply in love.... And they wanted that love for themselves... Smalldew was a little older then Brooksplash and at some point in their interaction, he stopped, asked Brooksplash to quiet down and sneakily wove through the trees and undergrowth, coming back with a large weasel in his mouth, which both Brooksplash and Smalldew ate together.

The Jack came up with a plan, their love would soon be theirs. The wolf named Smalldew would be the one he pretended to be, knowing how pack life works they would ask to become a mentor so they didn't have to do all the skilled hunting Smalldew was able to do, mostly because they wanted as much love as possible as well as not actually knowing how to hunt. So the Jack found and killed a rabbit coming back to where the pair were and making movement and wafting the sent of rabbit around, leading the trail far into the forest, Smalldew followed, leaving Brooksplash behind, the Jack left the dead rabbit in a nook in the rocks soon when Smalldew found the rabbit dead the Jack attacked, and took Smalldew's looks and copied their personality, hiding the body and and taking the rabbit back they met Brooksplash who joked and showed them a flower crown they had created,  the Jack was happy to feel loved again. Soon they asked the pack leader to become a mentor, the leader accepted and they became a mentor "teaching" the pups. Soon after a few weeks of this the disguise started to slip, and Brooksplash knew it wasn't Smalldew but didn't say anything, until one night just before the pack planned to get rid of the Jack, Brooksplash told them that she knew they weren't Smalldew, and that she knew Jacks would do this, the Jack felt sorry. They understood what it felt like to be loved and that love be taken away from them or to love and the one loved be taken away or just leave. They showed her the place they had hid Smalldew's body, Brooksplash thanked them. Brooksplash was sorry for the Jack, she wished she could keep loving them like she did with Smalldew, but she couldn't not after seeing her dead mate's body. The Jack obliged when the pack started mourning for them, they understood that what they did made them an outcast and they probably would've been accepted and loved if they just came in. The pack mourned for the Jack and Brooksplash promised that they would still remember and mourn them even after they were gone from the pack. Soon the Jack blacked out and found themself in the middle of the grasslands, far away from the Coniferous forest where the last pack was. They were alone again, but they felt rage and jealously fill their insides... Maybe they'll make them love them.
