It begins simply enough: a lone wolf, older than most and greying about the snout, discovers abandoned mines in the mountains. There are strange altars, to be sure, and odd markings along the walls, but she doesn't care why. Why should she? This is a matter of survival, isn't it?

So she survives.

And so the Aagwatz begin.

[ fill more out on this later. ]

- > wolves will be named in the conlang/proto-lang i've developed.
- > wolves do not breed more than three times in their lives, primarily due to the pack setting a standard of breeding past three years of age and only past three years of age.
- > as of now, they do not take in wolves from other packs.
- > a wolf who does not have a task -- pupsitter, hunter, or scout -- may not breed.

YEAR ONE (year three-four of the territory itself)

FALL |

Hazrohi, an aging wolf from a pack decimated by rabies, discovers a strange and seemingly abandoned series of mine tunnels in the mountains. She is quick to take shelter there, knowing that winter will be coming on soon. Within the same day, she meets the dispersal partners Axlooziyooc and Hazeet'ohija-- young lone wolves who are, naturally, inclined to join a solitary older wolf for company. Hazrohi has never been a leader before, but she takes to the task well enough.

After a short time, during which Hazrohi and the two youth scout out the territory thoroughly (discovering a strange altar of black stone and several wolf skeletons in the depths of the mine, which is unsettling to say the least), she gives the boys a single order: run wide and gather as many dispersal wolves or stragglers as they can.

Hazeet'ohija, deep in the bowels of the mine, discovers a pair of wolves together -- K'ioo and Riothee -- and wakes them. Neither wolf knows how they came to be sleeping there, but K'ioo does reveal he is a rather well-trained scout, which leads to K'ioo taking over Hazeet'ohija's position as scout.

Hazrohi herself finds T'ehlioo, an older dispersal, while fishing. The two hit it off almost immediately, recognizing similarity in their old age, and T'ehlioo happily joins the pack, joining Hazrohi as her mate.

By the end of the Fall, the group's concerted efforts have led to a rather large gathered pack. Hazrohi leads one hunting team as its finisher, and her mate, T'ehlioo, leads the other as a stalker. The two of them settle into their paces quite easily as lead wolves.

During a strange twist of the moon, the scout Theh-aig finds a dark furred wolf with odd markings on the edge of the territory. She introduces herself as Uut"yooc, and is pleasant enough to be invited in.

WINTER |

One of the chasers of Hazrohi's hunting team, Ooxshaishoh, is injured during a hunt and requires immediate medical attention. Hazeet'ohija, though not the fastest at his craft, is able to stabilize and save the chaser, much to the relief of the pack. After all, winter is hardly the season to lose a wolf.

Hazrohi and T'ehlioo, having no illusions about their ages, decide to have a litter together-- and Hazrohi declares no wolves may have a litter that season, so the pups have a higher chance of survival.

The scouts K'ioo and Theh-aig both report seeing strange ghostly wolves in the mountain wilderness. K'ioo in particular is bothered by this.

A strange wolf comes to the pack's borders asking about her mate. She seems to hold a conversation with an unseen figure, and leaves satisfied that her mate is being searched for.

The pack, having taken in dispersals and loners, now has enough members for three full hunting teams-- the Snowcrash Hunt (led by Hazrohi as its finisher), the Hunt of Spinning Stars (led by its stalker, T'ehlioo), and the Thawed River Runners (led by its chaser, Ehxlk'ov).

Two brothers are caught trying to steal a kill. The Thawed River Runners chase them away, wounding one in the process.

While foraging for herbs, Hazeet'ohija encounters a large amount of dancing lights. As he is frozen in fear, the lights pursue him. When he comes back to his senses he is in the prairie, with no memory of how he got there. He manages to stagger back, encountering Theh-aig as she returns from her run.

Zuwthilohgw begins to show signs of sickness. Concerned, her hunting partner Ooxshaishoh takes her to the herbalist-- Zuwthilogw is diagnosed with distemper. Ooxshaishoh stays with her as she recovers, and confesses her quiet feelings. The two become a bonded pair during the recovery.

Hazeet'ohija, worked to the bone by supporting both Zuwthilogw and the need for foraging, reached out to the denkeepers. Eevz, the most experienced of them, a dispersal brought into the pack to help organize the territory, took to his aid, and the two became a bonded pair as well by the time Zuwthilogw healed.

Vookroxuugsohi contracts an illness while hunting that leaves her delirious and shivering. Though she nearly passes, she eventually recovers.

SPRING |

T'ehlioo and Hazrohi's litter is born: four pups, on the cusp of spring. With the birth of the pups, the pack is free to ask permission for a litter again.

The lone wolf Seh:ax joins the pack, battered and tired from a winter on her own.

Hazrohi is badly wounded during a hunt. Later in the season, T'ehlioo catches a flu after a hunt; both of them find their footing, but T'ehlioo takes longer to recover.

Ha:jihot'xith receives a deep wound to the side from a doe-- she has to step back from the hunting team to recover.

Taking advantage of the announcement that pairs can have pups, Ehv:xarohi and Ehxlk'ov declare that they are both a pair and that they are expecting pups. The timing of these events -- both happening at once -- is, of course, picked up on. The impulsive nature does not sit well with Hazrohi, who strips Ehxlk'ov from his position as hunt leader. While the two are roaming the territory together, they hear screaming -- as if hordes of wolves are wailing from somewhere beyond what they could see. Disturbed, the two are quick to return to the heart of Aagwatz.

SUMMER -

Hazrohi and T'ehlioo's litter weans. The Snowcrash hunt is pulled from hunting duty to train the pups along with the sitters.

Theh-aig and K'ioo begin to take K'ioo and Riothee's adopted son, Gwuut, on scouting runs with them as he becomes an adolescent.

Ehv:xarohi and  Ehxlk'ov have a litter of four -- but two of the pups die shortly after birth. Ehv:xarohi is bitter, but focuses on mothering the other two. Ehxlk'ov wonders to the rest of the pack if the strange wolf spirit -- the mother who had lost her pups -- stole two of their litter.

To cover for the need to train, Hazrohi orders some rankless wolves into a hunting pack-- led by Seh:ax, this new hunt is named Far Flight and given permission to travel further out if needed.

Wuuk'ze, a loner, is caught scrounging at the borders by Theh-aig, and is talked into joining the pack.

Zehwoa and Seh:ax become a bonded pair. The two are inseperable, and Zehwoa makes it clear that she will fight for the right to have a litter with Seh:ax when the time comes.

K'ohgwtheh -- a young orphan -- is found on the border. Eevz and Hazeet'ohija take her in without question. When K'uugwa, a pupwatcher, raises the question of if she's got some kind of sickness, Hazeet'ohija responds sharply that he'll heal her if she does. In the end, K'ohgwtheh does have a flu, but as he promised, Hezeet'ohija healed the pup, and Eevz helped in the process.

Axlooziyooc is kicked in the leg by a deer during a hunt. Hazeet'ohija and Eevz have to rush to where the hunting party left the injured wolf, and the group has to work together to return her home.

The stalkers Aax-zi and K'ohav:h'o decide to bond together and have a litter out of pragmatism: they're both good at their jobs, and while they have no feelings for one another, they feel as if a singularly well-trained pup would be worth the union. Their announcement is made the day after  Ooxshaishoh and  Zuwthilohgw -- to the surprise of nobody -- announce their intention to have a litter, and the announcement means that with three litters being born in short intervals, the pack is going to have to buckle down in the coming months. There is a brief scuffle between Aax-zi and Ooxshaishoh after Aax-zi suggests that the she-wolf should simply select the strongest of her pups and get rid of the rest; Hazrohi has to intervene before the fight goes too far.

In the following days, Ooxshaishoh and Zuwthilohgw find a secluded den and settle in.

YEAR 2:

FALL

- Tragedy: during the night, K'ohgwtheh -- the adopted daughter of Eevz and Hazeet'ohija -- cries out several times about ghosts before falling silent. In the morning, there is nothing left but a stain of blood -- and again, there is no smell.

- Partway through the funeral ceremony, the air crackles and smells of ozone. Two adolescents step into view as if from some invisible pathway in the tunnels and stone. The larger of the two, a strange wolf with dark lines on her coat, introduces herself as Vaakr and her sister as Ranggvir. Hazrohi expresses concern at their sudden appearance, but Vaakr does not move when pushed and instead maintains that her place is in the mountains. As tension mounts, a member of the pack  -- a pupminder named Uugwit'aa -- tries to approach and drive the adolescents off by force, but upon touching Vaakr, Uugwit'aa is almost split in two by some snapping blow that cannot be seen.

-Hazrohi, who has always been a less than spiritual wolf, is disturbed by this, but the pack calms after the more superstitious lot step forward and explain that this sort of thing happens, from time to time: sometimes a pack is chosen to host wolves from Beyond Starlight. Hazrohi and her more skeptical companions must be persuaded, and this takes time, but it is managed.

[all wolves gain a 5 point axis shift towards 'spiritual'.]

- after mingling with a traveling wolf, the pack has its first major debate regarding future events. All hunt-team leaders were allowed to speak at the event, as were the herbalist and the head pupsitter. After heavy discussion, Hazrohi declared her choice: that the pack begin to practice clan-names or family-names; moving forward, wolves would obtain last names as they finished deeds, with their children inheriting last names. The pack did not quite adopt the title-name of Russet'Flame's pack, but took inspiration from wolves in that pack being given additional suffixes as they aged.

- Hazrohi and T'ehlioo chose their name first as pack leaders, taking the family name First-Wolf. After an evaluation of the deeds of other wolves, three more wolves were allowed to take a clan-name: Zuwthilohgw and Ooxshaishoh took the name Storm-Racer while Kaishohk'o, the first pup-sitter of the Aagwatz and the lead pup-sitter, took the name Root-Chewer

- Kaishok'o Root-Chewer sneaks away without permission to partner with a lone wolf. She returns expecting a litter. Hazrohi and the heads of the hunting team meet to discuss the issue and return with a decision: the pups may stay, but they make it clear this is only allowed due to Kaishok'o being the lead pupsitter.

-Hazrohi is wounded badly a second time. During her recovery, K'iook'sh meets a lone wolf and disperses early to travel with them.

-Ceeyih, a wolf who had joined with the intent of traveling to other packs, is found killed in a valley. The scent on her makes it clear she was attacked by a group of several wolves.

- Thaaig and Yuuvehx, a pair of hunters, bond and begin preparing for a litter.

- Kaisho'k'o has her pups. Of the litter of four, only two survive their first few days.

-Hazrohi and T'ehlioo's surviving children begin to train in a variety of positions among the pack, to see where they fit best.

Deaths: K'ohgwtheh, Uugwit'aa, Ceeyih
Dispersals: K'iook'sh First-Wolf

Winter

T'ehlioo First-Wolf steps down as pack leader and becomes a mentor after reaching the requisite age. Ohxaarova, a pupsitter, is nominated to replace him on his hunting team.

Two pups are killed by rival wolves. Aax-zi, a hunter, is brutally wounded defending one of his pups, and dies before he can he healed.

As Hazrohi begins to show her age, Hazeet'ohija, aware of his potential to become the next leader, puts himself and his mate Eevz forth as the pack's winter pair. After a debate, the pair won out, and they began to prepare their nest.

Thaaig and Yuuvehx's litter is born. As it is small, the pups are allowed to stay, but with a warning: they were not the winter pair, and so, if their pups competed with the pups of the herbalist and his mate, that couple's pups would take priority.

Ihva, the only surviving pup of Ehxlkov's pairing, becomes an adolescent and begins to train under his parents.

After Hazrohi receives a final injury that leaves her leg unable to support her weight, the pack realizes it is time for a new leader to be chosen. Between Seh:ax, Johgwohi, and Hazeet'ohija, the pack has a tough decision ahead of them. The competition takes the better part of an entire day, but at the end of it, Hazeet'ohija is made the new leader of the Aagwatz pack; he and Eevz take up residence in their new leader's den. When they wake in the morning, the both of them have mysteriously gained new markings on their fur.

Theh-aig asks permission from the new leader to be allowed to partner with a wolf she meets occasionally on her travels. Hazeet'ohija, not being as authoritarian as Hazrohi, permits this, with the caveat that Theh-aig ingest herbs to make the pregnancy easier on her given her constant traveling.

Zaathuu, a promising young hunter, is killed by a bull elk during a hunt. The pack is unable to recover his body initially; when they return, his corpse is gone.
