He kept his eyebrow raised slightly until the larger man dropped his hand, his lips quirking up slightly. "Its okay, Ques." Oh, Gods- Did I just call him that out loud?? He asked himself, panicking slightly. If he wasnt so shaky, he would slap himself to stop these weird thoughts.

"I'm not a healer, but I'm not sure if you can feel my heartbeat by putting your ear to my wrist." He commented, obviously gaining his mean spirit back, which meant he was feeling at least a bit better. He felt a sharp flare of panic rise in him at the sight of the needle, even though he knew it wouldnt hurt. He shouldn't have told Quesnel that he wasnt squeamish about needles, he definitely was.

"I- I'm ready." He said, taking a deep breath and shutting his eyes tightly. He knew he'd be able to feel a pinch, the numbing wouldn't work as well now that it had been a little while since it was applicated. "Be careful.." He whispered before clamping his mouth shut.

Quesnel glanced at Fable's twisted face and felt a stab of pity. "I promise I'll be careful," he said, grabbing Fable's hand again and giving it a gentle squeeze, before letting it go. As he leaned over Fable's side, Cerise let out a soft snort, lumbering closer. Quesnel's eyebrows shot up in surprise as she slowly lowered her head onto Fable's legs, staring at the two out of the corner of her eye. He shook his head; he'd explain the strangeness of that interaction to Fable later after he had fixed him all up.

He fell completely silent as the world around him was blurred out, his only focus on the gash in front of him.

Years of caring for animals had stilled Quesnel's hands, which was highly convenient, seeing as Fable's life was in those hands. Slipping the thread through the eye of the needle, he punctured the outer edge of Fable's skin of the wound. With the precision of a tailor, he made quick work of sewing the skin together, crisscrossing over and over again. As he made the final stitch, he held his hand out, curling and uncurling his fingers. Cerise swiftly raised her head from Fable's legs and sidled away, snuffling around one of his many packs. She found a small pair of scissors, and grabbing it with her teeth, brought it back over to Quesnel.

This was always the trickiest part for him. If he cut too low, the stitching would come undone, but if he cut too high, the wound wouldn't heal all the way. Taking a deep breath, he moved his face closer, holding the edge of the thread, mentally measuring it. Slowly, he moved the scissors over, and...

Snip

Quesnel let out a sigh of relief, getting off his feet and sitting on the ground. Beads of sweat had begun to form on his forehead. He took his shirt and using it like a rag, dabbled at his face. "All done," he said, smiling at Fable. "How do you feel?"

"Alright, okay. This is fine." He mumbled, cheeks flushing as Ques squeezed his hand. He wished the feeling that caused that flush was anger, but if he said it was he would be lying. He looked down at his legs, confused on what the weight was. He smiled gently at the bear, wishing he could reach down and pet her without being in intense pain.

Fable clenched his teeth as he felt the sharp poke of the needle piercing his skin. He held his breath, thinking about the last time he'd had to be stitched up. He despised needles, always had. But that time solidified his hate for them, his extreme fear of them. He watched as Cerise grabbed a pair of scissors for Ques, looking over at the lumbering man sitting next to him. He smiled softly as he breathed a sigh of relief, suddenly letting out his own sigh.

"Feeling pretty good.. for having been stabbed." He joked, coughing slightly. He slowly pushed himself into a sitting position, beckoning Quesnel closer. He reached his hand up, caressing the larger man's cheek before leaning in and kissing his other cheek. "Thank you.." He said, his smile growing in just the slightest.

Quesnel laughed. "Yeah, I wouldn't recommend getting stabbed again," he said. At the sound of Fable coughing, he frowned slightly. He hated that Fable was coughing so much. Maybe he just needs some soup, he thought, relaxing and smiling. Yes, that seemed like a good idea. He returned to the present as Fable pushed himself up and beckoned to Quesnel. Puzzled, he leaned forward.

The large man froze as Fable's hand cupped his cheek, his eyes growing wide. He bent his head slightly, staring at nothing as Fable kissed his other cheek. "Thank you," he said, but Quesnel barely heard him. No thoughts were running through his head at all. He pulled his hands up and rested his hands against his chest, before glancing up. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. His face flushed a bright, bright red. He placed one of his hands on the makeshift bed, putting his weight on it.

A strangled sound came from his mouth, and he cleared his throat, before muttering, "My pleasure."

He sat there for a moment, just staring in awe at Fable, his body feeling strangely tingly. He didn't even notice Cerise huff-wheezing her laugh.

What do I do, do I kiss him back? Do something!

He stood up abruptly, stumbling back, pointing his thumbs back to the entrance. He cleared his throat, rubbing the back of his neck. "Well, uh, since you're, um, feeling better," he said, backing out of the cave while motioning for Cerise to follow him. On her way out, she picked up one of his bags, giving it to Quesnel. "I'm just going to go, uh, make you something to eat." He laughed nervously, fumbling with the strap of the bag as he slipped it over his shoulder. "I don't know about you, but I could go for some soup now, haha."

And then he turned and walked into the woods, mind racing.

Cerise lumbered after him, still wheeze-huff-laughing. She nudged his side in a teasing manner. Quesnel let out a nervous chuckle, shoving her head to the side. "Shuddup, dummy," he said, rubbing his forehead. "I know, I probably messed up. But what was I supposed to do?" Cerise huffed, raising a brow. Quesnel shook his head. "No, that would be weird. Hey, do you think he'd like mushroom lentil soup? I saw some mushrooms earlier," he said, scanning the forest floor, but his mind wasn't on the soup.

Why me, of all people?

His cheeks started flaming as soon as his lips made contact with Quesnel's cheek, thumb giving his stubble a small caress before leaning backwards and watching the man's cheeks turn bright red as well. He winked at him cheekily, a large smirk gracing his lips. He let out a giggle as Ques stood up quickly, though his demeanor quickly changed as soon as food was mentioned. He moved as fast as he could, scrambling to his feet before letting out a hiss of pain. "Mmm, food." He whispered to himself, watching the man fastwalk into the woods.

He turned and looked around, opening his mouth as he took in the scents around him. His senses were dull due to being in his human form, but were definitely sharper than a normal human's would be. Should I risk breaking my stitches open to get a rabbit and/or deer? He pondered, tapping his chin with a frown. Sure, this was a distraction from the fact that he was thinking about kissing Ques- No, no, dont think, dont feel. No reason you should be wanting to do that. He scolded himself, frowning slightly.

He grabbed a stick, starting to sharpen it since he was smarter than shifting while still healing. He sat on a rock that he didnt have to go down too far to sit on, frowning slightly as he wondered why, and how, the hunter was starting to worm his way into Fable's ice cold heart.

Quesnel let out a sigh, still rubbing his face. His cheek still tingled where Fable had kissed him. What would your father say? his inner voice whispered. Nothing, he hissed back. He's long gone now. He sighed, pausing to take a little break. He sunk onto an old fallen tree trunk, cupping his face in his hands, mind still whirling. He sensed Cerise lumber towards him, falling silent now. She nuzzled her way onto his lap, staring up at him with giant eyes. He uncovered his face and smiled down at her, scratching her ears and placing his forehead on hers.

"What am I gonna do, girl?"

She huffed. Why should she know? He chuckled, giving her a little peck on the nose. "Thank you for trying to help anyways, Cerise." She lifted her cheek, licking his nose. He rested his cheek on the top of her head, closing his eyes with a sigh as she sat down. They sat for a moment, just resting in silence.  They had always found comfort in each other's presence, even when everything around them was insane.

After a couple of minutes, Quesnel let out a sigh, sitting up. Cerise let out a heavy yawn, sleepily blinking her eyes. "We should get going again, yeah?" he said, standing up, her head slipping off of his lap. "Think you can find some garlic and lentils?" Cerise let out a confident huff, nodding her head and standing up. She lumbered away, leaving Quesnel to his thoughts once more.

He turned and glanced around the rotting log, and immediately found some wild shiitake mushrooms. "Wow, that's some good luck," he murmured, stooping low to pick some. He filled about a quarter of his bag with them (the recipe he had in mind required a lot of mushrooms), before standing up again. "Thyme and rosemary, thyme and rosemary," he muttered, peeking under plants and beside trees. Where was an herb when you needed one?

Would Fable even like this soup?

He remembered a flash of his dark blue eyes and felt a jolt in his chest. He quickly shook it away.

The shapeshifter stumbled off into the woods after finishing the wooden spear, his mouth open slightly to see if he could find some sort of large prey. He could sense that there was some sort of deer nearby so he made his way quietly through the brush, coming upon a large buck grazing. He fixed his posture, dropping into a stalking stance. A few moments later, a cry of pain could be heard from the deer, but it was over in an instant.

Fable knelt next to the buck's head, pulling it into his lap as he sent out a thanks to the gods and a prayer that this majestic being's spirit made it to them before lifting the large beast and laying it over his shoulders. If anyone had thought he was weak before, the sight of the small man carrying this huge animal without a drop of sweat in sight wouldve smited that thought. He stumbled back through the trees to the campsite, a tingling pain coming from his stitched wound.

He dropped the deer to the ground next to the fire, beginning to prep it while singing something his mother used to sing to him at night. A lullaby perhaps. It wasnt in English, so only Fable knew what it said now. It was a lullaby passed down through his family for generations, and he was the only one left. Besides his father....

It took Quesnel a while to collect all of his ingredients. It was peaceful, being out here. It cleared his thoughts (which were most definitely not of Fable), and left him feeling calm. By the time Cerise returned with a mouthful of garlic and lentils, his pack was practically bursting at the seams. He opened it when she arrived, smiling as she dropped her finds. "Think it'll be enough?" he said. She huffed in agreement, to which he chuckled and rubbed her head.

They began their trek back to the camp, but Quesnel couldn't help but be interrupted by his prying thoughts. The King, the cure, his mother. He cursed himself. He had been so infatuated with Fable, he had completely forgotten why he had come here in the first place. When they returned, he was grinding his teeth in anger and frustration at himself, but then he heard someone singing. It sounded like Fable, but it was in a different tongue. Not to mention, it sounded like it was coming from outside the cave.

Quesnel and Cerise stepped out from the brush, and his jaw dropped at the sight of Fable skinning a large buck, drenched in the deer's blood, and singing a soft tune. Quesnel felt a wave of anger and worry but him, but he stopped himself from rushing out. There was something about the way that Fable looked so... Relaxed. Quesnel smiled at Fable's back, leaning against a tree and watching him for a while. There was a dazed look on his face.

This would be a perfect picture, he thought, silently cursing himself again; if only he had a notebook! He shook his head, before walking up beside Fable and setting down his knapsack.

"I would've preferred it if you stayed in bed," Quesnel said softly, raising a brow at Fable. A small smile played on his lips. He thought for a moment, looking down at the carcass. "Thank you for hunting, though. It means a lot." He smiled wider, before turning to go back to the cave to retrieve the cooking utensils. He always carried them everywhere.

While Quesnel disappeared into the cave, Cerise plopped herself down beside Fable, giving what was oddly similar to a smug grin. She nudged him with one of her elbows, before puckering her lips in a taunting manner.

She most definitely didn't learn that from Quesnel.

He continued singing, even after he knew that Ques was there. It wasnt that hard, due to his.. heightened senses. He didnt want to ruin the man's clear daydreaming. He thought about his father again, hand clenching on the knife but continuing to skin the buck. He had always wondered why he had left Fable and his sister, their mother refused to talk about him so they were forced to forget about it. His sister did just that, but he refused to. He was angry. He wanted to know the answers to questions he had been asking himself for years.

He looked up as the hunter spoke, pushing away all of the negative thoughts. "Yeah, well.. I felt useless just sitting here while you did all the work." He answered, frowning slightly. "My pleasure." He looked after Ques, watching him leave with a gentle smile. He looked at Cerise with an eyebrow raised as she plopped down next to him, wondering why she looked so smug. He let out a snort of laughter when she made a kissing face, almost doubling over in surprise.

She most definitely learned it from Fable.

Quesnel emerged, now wearing his shirt, holding a large pot filled with three bowls, a silver ladle, two spoons, and a flat rock. A dagger had also appeared on his belt, sheathed in leather. He smiled at the image of Cerise staring innocently at him and Fable laughing.

"Well," he said, setting down his utensils and lowering himself onto the ground. "Just know I'm not asking you to do anything." He began to unload his tools, handing the pot to Cerise. She took it with a huff, going out of her way to nudge Fable with her haunches as she lumbered to the stream. Quesnel chuckled, shaking his head, before pulling his hair back again. He turned his attention to Fable, smiling softly. "I don't want you to hurt yourself again. Not a stress-free situation for either of us, yeah?" He elbowed Fable's arm jokingly, before tilting his head back to the deer. "Cerise likes eating soup, so you don't have to save any meat for her if you don't want to," he said, taking the pot from Cerise.

He dumped the vegetables in, dipping his hands in and washing them off. He usually cleaned them in streams, but he'd much rather be sitting next to Fable, even when the sharp scent of innards stabbed his nostrils. He sat for a moment in silence, moving each clean vegetable, mushroom, and plant to the stone slab. Quesnel paused, glancing over at the shapeshifter, his face strangely sad. "I, um, never told you about why I, uh, agreed to... hunt you."
